Based on 408 quantitative samples distributed over two seasons (winter and spring) and 42 stations, from Georges Bank, New England, USA, the feeding guild classification presented by Fauchald and Jumars was examined. Hypotheses involving the association of particular feeding guilds with environmental variables were posed and tested. In this study, herbivore, motile, jawed (HMJ); filtering and surface deposit feeding, sessile or discretely motile, and tentaculate (F-SD-SDT); burrowing, sessile, non-jawed (BSX); surface deposit feeding, motile, non-jawed (SMX); carnivore, motile, jawed (CMJ), and filter feeding, discretely motile, non-jawed (FDT) were the major feeding guilds of polychaetes. There were more significant associations between feeding guilds and depth, dissolved oxygen, and mean phi and gravel than any other environmental variables. Some significant relationships between feeding guilds and depth, fine-grained sediment, nutrition in sediment (carbon, nitrogen, bacterial biomass, and microbial biomass) emerged. Burrowing, motile, non-jawed (BMX), surface deposit feeding, discretely motile, tentaculate (SDT) and FDT increased with depth. BMX, BSX, and FDT increased with carbon, microbial biomass, and nitrogen, respectively. Some preliminary polychaete feeding surfaces were posed. Nantucket Shoals and Georges Bank were characterized by HMJ and F-SD-SDT; Northern Slope by FDT; Southern Slope by FDT and HMJ; Southwestern Slope by HMJ, SMX, BMX; and the Gulf of Maine by F-SD-SDT, SDT and surface deposit feeding, sessile, tentaculate (SST).  相似文献

The streamside salamander, Ambystoma barbouri, exhibits ineffective antipredator behavior (high emergence rate from refuge, and high activity while out of refuge) and thus suffers heavy predation in stream pools with sunfish. A. barbouri evolved relatively recently from an ancestor that closely resembled a sister species, A. texanum, which breeds in fishless, ephemeral ponds. Sunfish thus represent a relatively new selection pressure for A. barbouri. Phylogenetic inertia predicts that (1) A. texanum should be very poor at coping with fish and (2) because it has only recently been exposed to fish, A. barbouri should still be poor at avoiding fish, but due to its recent exposure to fish, A. barbouri should be better than A. texanum at coping with sunfish. Experimental results provided mixed support for these predictions. As predicted, A. texanum suffered heavy sunfish predation. Compared to A. texanum, A. barbouri showed a greater tendency to initiate alarm moves that enhanced escape success from fish. However, in both the presence and absence of fish, A. barbouri showed higher emergence rates from refuge and higher movement while out of refuge than A. texanum. These behaviors tend to increase exposure to sunfish, i.e., for these key behaviors, A. barbouri apparently evolved in the wrong direction as far as fish predation is concerned. Due to these offsetting effects (increased exposure to fish, increased escape success), A. barbouri is no better at surviving with sunfish than A. texanum. A possible explanation for the high activity of A. barbouri is its use of highly ephemeral habitats (relative to A. texanum) that favor the evolution of higher activity, feeding, and developmental rates for A. barbouri relative to A. texanum. Coaching interviewees to perform in employment interviews can influence the interview scores. We describe different types of coaching, emphasizing interventions designed to focus interviewees on core, interview‐relevant content and to help them convey the content accurately (as opposed to interventions designed to teach interviewees to manipulate their scores using peripheral means). We then study the effects of the former type of intervention in relation to the criterion‐related validity of a structured employment interview. In a combined sample of 146 public safety job incumbents, a predictive validation study was conducted using scores from a situational panel interview. Predictive validity and reliability was observed to be higher in a sample of coached interviewees compared to a sample of uncoached interviewees. Abstract: Using the latest available General Circulation Model (GCM) results we present an assessment of climate change impacts on California hydrology and water resources. The approach considers the output of two GCMs, the PCM and the HadCM3, run under two different greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenarios: the high emission A1fi and the low emission B1. The GCM output was statistically downscaled and used in the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) macroscale distributed hydrologic model to derive inflows to major reservoirs in the California Central Valley. Historical inflows used as inputs to the water resources model CalSim II were modified to represent the climate change perturbed conditions for water supply deliveries, reliability, reservoir storage and changes to variables of environmental concern. Our results show greater negative impacts to California hydrology and water resources than previous assessments of climate change impacts in the region. These impacts, which translate into smaller streamflows, lower reservoir storage and decreased water supply deliveries and reliability, will be especially pronounced later in the 21st Century and south of the San Francisco bay Delta. The importance of considering how climate change impacts vary for different temporal, spatial, and institutional conditions in addition to the average impacts is also demonstrated.  相似文献

We characterise US materials exchanges by means of an exploratory survey, with 63 respondents classified by materials handled, organisation type and implementation strategy. Few respondents handle hazardous materials; instead, most focus on pre-consumer items such as building materials or post-consumer durable goods such as furniture. Non-profit organisations and state/local government agencies predominate in this niche, which fills a gap between ubiquitous for-profit scrap recyclers and used-merchandise stores. There are three distinct implementation strategies: passive listers of materials; active brokers, who become involved in each transaction; and those who take possession of materials for storage and display in a warehouse. Warehouse operations typically have a local focus and a loyal customer base, whereas passive listing services serve larger areas and are undergoing consolidation. Passive listing services appear to be relatively marginal enterprises, although the adoption of Internet technology is improving their viability.  相似文献

Studies of avian eggshell coloration have been a long-standing research focus in behavioral evolutionary ecology. Museum collections have provided a widely used resource because they allow efficient sampling across broad temporal, geographical, and taxonomic ranges, even for species that are rare and for which sampling in the wild is ethically or practically unwarranted. We used reflectance spectrophotometry across the avian visual spectrum to compare eggshell color of specimens of the song thrush (Turdus philomelos) in two museums (Natural History Museum, UK and Auckland Museum, New Zealand) with each other and with eggshells collected fresh in New Zealand. These data enabled us to test the effects of source and storage in different museums, as well as time since collection, across four metrics of eggshell coloration: blue-green and ultraviolet chroma, overall brightness, and the spectral coefficient of variation. Variation within an egg, within a clutch, and among clutches, was similar between the two museum datasets but different from those of fresh eggs. We found significant differences in all four metrics between the collections, and that fresh eggshells reflected stronger in the blue-green wavelength than in museum eggs. This difference is most likely due to different preservation techniques and storage histories. Furthermore, an effect of time since collection was only apparent in the blue-green chroma and was higher in more recent museum eggshell samples. Our results support the use of historic museum samples in intraspecific studies of shell coloration providing that efforts are made to compare specimens, which were collected during similar periods.  相似文献
