Four copepod species (Acartia clausi, Centropages typicus, Temora stylifera, Calanus helgolandicus) from the northwest Mediterranean were subjected to electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gel in an attempt to distinguish specific biochemical characteristics for each species. Enzymograms of 5 enzymes were studied: esterases, leucine aminopeptidase, alkaline phosphatase, malate dehydrogenase and the malic enzyme. Marked interspecific differences were revealed, enabling specific biochemical identities to be established which can be useful as taxonomic criteria in the same way as morphological characteristics. Females of the Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) incubate their eggs under the abdomen for a period of several months. We estimated the individual fecundity of N. norvegicus (1) before spawning, and (2) at the end of the incubation period. From these two relationships, we then calculated the average egg loss. Egg loss seems to be relatively higher for small females than for large ones. The mean egg loss estimated for the Bay of Biscay (45%) differs from the only other existing value (75%) calculated by other authors for Portuguese waters. Egg loss may regulate stock-density, and may be a mechanism intervening in stock-recruitment. In order to estimate the fecundity per recruit, fecundity at the end of the incubation period must be used: this takes into account the rate of egg loss as a function of female length.

Here, we show a fast and sensitive method for the determination of inorganic arsenic in natural waters using differential
pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry. All the arsenite determinations were done in 2.0 mol L−1 HCl + 3.15 × 10−4 mol L−1 Cu(II) supporting electrolyte. 1 × 10−3 mol L−1 sodium thiosulphate was used as As(V) reducing agent. The detection limit was 0.5 μg L−1 for both species. The method has been applied to water samples collected in an arsenic-contaminated region of Brazil, in

The great fecundity and very high larval mortality of most marine invertebrates and fish make possible substantial variance
in the number of offspring contributed by adults to subsequent generations. The reproductive success of such organisms may
thus resemble a sweepstakes lottery, in which a minority of progenitors succeeds in replacing an entire population, while
the majority fails to procreate. One specific prediction of this hypothesis, that genetic diversity of newly settled cohorts
should be less than that of the adult population, is tested in the present study. Microsatellite DNA markers were examined
in naturally spawned juvenile European flat oysters Ostrea edulis (L.), collected over a 12-day period in 1993 from the western Mediterranean Sea, near Sète, France (43°32′N, 3°56′E) and
grown out for a period of up to 10 months. Variation in these juveniles was compared to that in a pooled sample of adults
collected in 1994 from two locations (Thau Lagoon and Port St. Louis) that had statistically homogeneous allelic frequencies.
Though nearly twice as large as the pooled adult sample, the juvenile sample had only 60% of the adult allelic diversity.
Analyses of linkage disequilibrium and kinship, as well as estimation of the effective number of parents, suggested that 10–20
adults produced this juvenile cohort. This observation supports the hypothesis of sweepstakes reproductive success and suggests
that partial inbreeding may occur even in species with large populations and dispersing planktonic larvae.

In this study, we report the effects of pH and divalent cations on the adsorption of arsenate (As(V)) by titanium dioxide
(TiO2) nanoparticles. The extent of As(V) adsorption on TiO2 decreased with increasing pH due to the decrease of positively charged binding sites on the TiO2 surface. The Langmuir maximum uptake capacity at pH 4 is about three times higher than that at pH 7. Here we show that the
relatively low As(V) uptake at circumneutral pH could be substantially enhanced by the addition of common divalent cations
such as magnesium and calcium. At a concentration of approximately 7 mM, magnesium and calcium increased the extent of As(V)
adsorption from 2.1 to 6.5 and 7.7 mg As(V)/g TiO2, respectively. 相似文献

Equating eco-efficiency with the business link to sustainable development is clearly limited, especially with the new paradigms brought up by Corporate Social Responsibility, which has shown that the private sector’s contribution to sustainable development can go far beyond the sphere of pollution control. It is necessary to give eco-efficiency a broader meaning so that it can support the quest for sustainable development. This requires the inclusion of social aspects, leading to a kind of eco-social efficiency. The present paper illustrates this idea by comparing Brazilian production and use of ethanol from sugarcane, in the context of the National Alcohol Program (Proalcool), with biodiesel production and use, in the context of the Biodiesel National Program (PNPB). Many bacteria live in close association with sponges. Within these consortia, molecules of communication such as quorum-sensing and hormone-like molecules may occur in order to regulate the partnership. Of particular interest, bacterial N-acyl-l-homoserine lactones (AHLs) were screened in supernatants from Suberites domuncula-associated bacteria using an E. coli bioluminescent reporter system. These sponge-associated bacteria were beforehand isolated on several media supplemented or not with a sponge extract to attempt to isolate sponge-specific bacteria. Out of 81 AHL-producing bacteria, three strains requiring sponge extract to grow were selected for AHL characterization. The in vitro produced AHLs, that is, in bacterial culture supernatants, were identified as N-(3-butanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone and N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone and quantified using LC–ESI–MS/MS. The in vivo production of AHLs by sponge-associated bacteria has also been demonstrated in a healthy host for the first time: N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone, N-(3-hexanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone, and N-(3-heptanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone. This AHL production in sponges may suggest a potential role of these molecules between sponge-associated bacteria and/or between sponge-associated bacteria and the sponge. 相似文献
