For organisms, temperature is one of the most important environmental factors and gains increasing importance due to global warming, since increasing temperatures may pose organisms close to their environmental tolerance limits and, thus, they may become more vulnerable to environmental stressors. We analyzed the temperature-dependence of the water-soluble antioxidant capacity of the cladoceran Moina macrocopa and evaluated its life trait variables with temperature (15, 20, 25, 30 °C) and humic substance (HS) concentrations (0, 0.18, 0.36, 0.90, 1.79 mM DOC) as stressors. Temperatures below and above the apparent optimum (20 °C) reduced the antioxidative capacity. Additions of HSs increased body length, but decreased mean lifespan at 15 and 20 °C. There was no clear HS-effect on offspring numbers at 15, 20, and 30 °C. At 25 °C with increasing HS-concentration, lifespan was extended and offspring numbers increased tremendously, reaching 250% of the control. Although the applied HS preparation possesses estrogenic and antiandrogenic activities, a xenohormone mechanism does not seem plausible for the reproductive increase, because comparable effects did not occur at other temperatures. A more convincing explanation appears to be the mitohormesis hypothesis which states that a certain increase of reactive oxygen production leads to improved health and longevity and, with Moina, also to increased offspring numbers. Our results suggest that at least with the eurythermic M. macrocopa, a temperature above the optimum can be beneficial for several life trait variables, even when combined with a chemical stressor. Temperatures approximately 10 °C above its optimum appear to adversely affect the lifespan and reproduction of M. macrocopa. This indicates that this cladoceran species seems to be able to utilize temperature as an ecological resource in a range slightly above its thermal optimum. 相似文献

The Biological Resource Centre for the Environment BRC4Env is a network of Biological Resource Centres (BRCs) and collections whose leading objectives are to improve the visibility of genetic and biological resources maintained by its BRCs and collections and to facilitate their use by a large research community, from agriculture research to life sciences and environmental sciences. Its added value relies on sharing skills, harmonizing practices, triggering projects in comparative biology, and ultimately proposing a single-entry portal to facilitate access to documented samples, taking into account the partnership policies of research institutions as well as the legal frame which varies with the biological nature of resources. BRC4Env currently includes three BRCs: the Centre for Soil Genetic Resources of the platform GenoSol, in partnership with the European Conservatory of Soil Samples; the Egg Parasitoids Collection (EP-Coll); and the collection of ichthyological samples, Colisa. BRC4Env is also associated to several biological collections: microbial consortia (entomopathogenic bacteria, freshwater microalgae…), terrestrial arthropods, nematodes (plant parasitic, entomopathogenic, animal parasitic...), and small mammals. The BRCs and collections of BRC4Env are involved in partnership with academic scientists, as well as private companies, in the fields of medicinal mining, biocontrol, sustainable agriculture, and additional sectors. Several treatment processes of mixed sludge naturally contaminated with nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE) were compared in order to evaluate their efficiency for the removal of these endocrine disrupters. Anaerobic and aerobic treatments were carried out in continuous stirred tank reactors, operated separately or combined together, at mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures and with or without ozone post-treatment. Anaerobic mesophilic removal of NPE consisted of complete removal of nonylphenol diethoxylate, incomplete removal of nonylphenol monoethoxylate and non stoechiometric production of nonylphenol, with consequently a NPE removal of 25%. At thermophilic temperature, anaerobic digestion led to an increase of the total solids removal efficiency, while improving NPE degradation (30%). Under thermophilic aerobic condition, the three compounds were removed simultaneously with a NPE removal efficiency higher than under anaerobic condition (39%). This removal is always well correlated to the total solids removal meaning that bioavailability remains the main limiting factor. Combination of either thermophilic aerobic-mesophilic anaerobic or mesophilic anaerobic-ozonation treatments enhanced the NPE removal by comparison to single systems (45% and 48%, respectively). These results confirm the high potential of existing and up-grading sewage sludge treatments to degrade such refractory and aged compounds. 相似文献

In the environment, the sorption and the degradation of organic pollutants are of increasing interest. The investigation of the chemical structures provides a basis for the development of a suitable binding model approach and for the mechanistic understanding of the chemical fate processes. The aim of this study was the identification of different species of the antibiotic compound sulfadiazine (SDZ) using (1)H and (13)C NMR experiments and ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In the neutral, aprotic solvent dimethylsulfoxide-d(6) (DMSO-d(6)), a new sulfadiazine structure containing an O-H-N hydrogen bond was identified. In the protic solvent water-d(2) and in dependence on pH and the position of the amidogen hydrogen atom nine possible SDZ conformations were analyzed and five structures were identified. Good conformity between theory and calculation of (1)H NMR was observed. Unfortunately, (13)C NMR is not sensitive enough for comparison and differentiation. In order to verify the identified structures, additional NBO/NLMO (natural localized molecular orbital) analyses were conducted (calculation of net atomic charges, bond polarity, atomic valence, and electron delocalization). Finally, conformation optimizations were performed in order to investigate the stability of the SDZ species. We showed that SDZ contains no S=O double bond, but that it has two S-O single bonds. Surprisingly, negative charges were observed at the pyrimidine nitrogen atom. With these results, the known structure of SDZ was revised. Studies of the geometrical structure and the torsion angles showed that SDZ is very flexible and can be easily fitted to the sorbent. These observations would explain the strong sorbance and hence the rapid formation of non-extractable residues in the environment because SDZ acts as a strong ligand. These results show that that the sulfonamide hydrogen is important for the biological activity but the pyrimidine nitrogen and the sulfonamide oxygen is responsible for the sorbance in environment. 相似文献

Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) has recently been receiving increasing recognition in policy debates. Various aspects of possible regulatory frameworks for its implementation are beginning to be discussed in Europe. One of the issues associated with the wide use of CCS is that it requires the establishment of a carbon dioxide (CO2) transport network, which could result in the spatial restructuring of power generation and transmission systems. This poses a significant coordination problem necessitating public planning and regulation. This paper provides a survey over multiple research strands on CCS, particularly energy system modeling and spatial optimization, pertaining to the efficient installment of CCS-related infrastructure throughout Europe. Understanding the dynamics of population recovery is particularly complex when an organism has multiple, remote breeding and feeding grounds separated by one of the longest known migration routes. This study reports on the most comprehensive assessment of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) movements between remote Antarctic waters south of New Zealand and east Australia (EA), and the migratory corridors and breeding grounds of Australia and Oceania. A total of 112 individual whales were identified; 57 from microsatellites and 61 by fluke with 23 % (n = 26) matched to sites outside Antarctica. Despite large datasets from other southern regions being included in the comparison, the whales were predominantly linked to EA (n = 24). Only two matches to the Oceania catalogues directly north was surprising; therefore the primary feeding grounds of these endangered whales still remain unknown. The confirmation of the Balleny Islands as an important feeding ground for EA whales could provide an insight into reasons behind the rapid recovery of this population. Determining the feeding grounds of Oceania’s whales may explain whether prey energetics or migration length are limiting factors to their recovery and will allow an understanding of future ecosystem changes in these whales. 相似文献

We present the results of a parametric sensitivity analysis of a widely used model for atmospheric dispersion of toxic gases, in order better to understand the influence of user-adjustable parameters on model outputs. We have studied 60 min continuous release scenarios for three different products (nitric oxide, ammonia and chlorine), chosen to cover a range of physical characteristics and storage conditions. For each product, we have broken down base-case scenarios into a number of sub-scenarios corresponding to different release conditions which determine physical phenomena (flow rate, release angle, release elevation and atmospheric stability class). The use of statistical tools to analyze the results of a large number of model executions allows us to rank model parameters according to their influence on the variability of a number of model outputs (distances and concentrations), on a per-scenario and per-product basis. Analysis of the results allows us to verify our understanding of the modeling of cloud dispersion. 相似文献

An individual-based model was developed to predict the population dynamics of Daphnia magna at laboratory conditions from individual life-history traits observed in experiments with different feeding conditions. Within the model, each daphnid passes its individual life cycle including feeding on algae, aging, growing, developing and – when maturity is reached – reproducing. The modelled life cycle is driven by the amount of ingested algae and the density of the Daphnia population. At low algae densities the population dynamics is mainly driven by food supply, when the densities of algae are high, the limiting factor is “crowding” (a density-dependent mechanism due to chemical substances released by the organisms or physical contact, but independent of food competition). 相似文献
