Scandinavia has one secondary lead smelter that recycles lead from approximately 85% of used car batteries in Scandinavia and which has been active since the 1940s. The smelter, situated in Landskrona, has undergone a comprehensive clean up programme during the last decade, during which time production has doubled, while at the same time discharges of dust and lead to the atmosphere have decreased.Top and depth soil samples were taken on a 0.5km×0.5Km grid throughout the city of Landskrona, which covers an area of approximately 15km2. Samples were analysed by ICPAES for a number of elements including Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, As, Sb and Hg. Road dust samples from selected sites were collected and similarly analysed. Blood samples were taken from 37 volunteer schoolchildren (aged 8–11) from two schools in Landskrona. House dust samples were taken from each child's home. Soil samples were taken from homes which had gardens, public and school play areas. Elevated heavy metal concentrations were found in close proximity to the secondary lead smelter, and this soil enrichment influences the whole of the town, modified to some extent by the prevailing wind. The smelter does not influence the soil lead concentration at distances greater than 3.5km, where the soil reflects the background value for the area.Road dust samples also show decreases in lead concentrations with distance from the smelter. The average level of lead in house dust was considerably lower than that found in Birmingham, UK. Blood lead levels in the child population ranged from 1.5–5.1gdl–1, with a mean of 3.05gdl–1, showing a distinct decrease from those measured in 1978–82. No significant difference in blood lead concentrations with distance of the home from the smelter, nor between attenders at the two schools was revealed in the limited number of children studied. 相似文献

High-level lead exposure can have serious effects on the intellectual and behavioural development of young children. There has been much controversy in the last decade concerning the possible impact of low-level lead exposure upon the neurobehavioural and psychomotor development of children. Five longitudinal studies (Boston, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Port Pirie and Sydney) examining lead effects on child development were initiated in the early 1980s. These studies share multiple design features and include data on blood lead and neurobehavioural measurements from birth, six months, or annual intervals to seven years. All the studies use multivariate analysis to take into account possible confounding covariates with outcome measures.The studies tend to have varying results based on the covariates used and type of subject population. An analysis of the results of the five studies with regard to effects associated with prenatal and postnatal lead exposure and pregnancy outcome has been carried out and reveals inconsistencies in the onset, stability, and nature of neurobehavioural effects correlated with different indices of lead exposure. it is possible that the variation in reported results may be due to the use of different covariates and analyses among studies. A common analysis should be carried out among ail studies to further determine consistency of results. Although individual studies may show some effects, taken as a whole, the current published data from the five studies in this review are inconsistent and do not lend support to the concept that low level lead exposure resulting in blood lead levels below 25 g dL–1 is associated with neurobehavioural deficits in children. 相似文献

Lichens are a world-widespread consortium of fungal and photosynthetic partners. Usnic acid is one of the most common and abundant lichen metabolites, well known as an antibiotic, but also endowed with several other interesting properties. This review summarises the most relevant studies on usnic acid, focusing on a number of biological activities in different fields. On the basis of the existing literature, usnic acid seems to be an exclusive lichen product. No synthetic derivatives more effective than the natural form are known. Both the (+) and (-) enantiomers of usnic acid are effective against a large variety of Gram-positive (G+) bacterial strains, including strains from clinical isolates, irrespective of their resistant phenotype. Of particular relevance is the inhibition of growth of multi-resistant strains of Streptococcus aureus, enterococci and mycobacteria. The (+)-usnic acid enantiomer appears to be selective against Streptococcus mutans without inducing perturbing side effects on the oral saprophyte flora. On the other hand, the (-)-usnic acid enantiomer is a selective natural herbicide because of its blocking action against a specific key plant enzyme. Other recognised characteristics of usnic acid are ultraviolet absorption and preserving properties. The toxicology, the in vitro anti-inflammatory effects and the mechanism of action of usnic acid need to be investigated in greater detail in order to reach clinical trials and to allow further applications. Furthermore, more research is needed to make possible intensive lichen culture, in order to produce large quantities of lichen substances for pharmaceutical, cosmetic and agricultural purposes. This paper describes a survey of total selenium contents of surface soil samples in Wales. Samples were collected from three areas: over Silurian shales where deficiences in sheep have been reported, in an area severely affected by pollution from lead mining and in an area where black, marine shales outcrop. Selenium levels were low over the Silurian shales but high in the other two areas. Statistical analysis of the data permitted the separating out of a basal range of selenium values low enough to account for the reports of deficiences in sheep. Vat and sulfur dyes must be reduced to their leuco forms before application. Since this process is currently carried out using irreversible reducing chemicals, it involves high economic and environmental costs. Here we show that reduction can alternatively be performed in an alkaline bath at room temperature by using H2 activated by a Pd catalyst. Sulfur dyes are thus directly reduced, whereas vat dyes require an electron transfer mediator. This alternative reaction can also be driven using H2 at sub-atmospheric pressures. Mothers may profoundly affect offspring phenotype and performance by adjusting egg components, including steroid hormones.
We studied the effects of elevated prenatal testosterone (T) exposure in the ring-necked pheasant on the expression of a suite
of male and female traits, including perinatal response to stress, immune response, growth, and secondary sexual traits. Prenatal
T levels were increased by injecting the yolk of unincubated eggs with physiological doses of the hormone. Yolk T injection
resulted in a reduced length of male tarsal spurs, a trait which positively predicts male success in intra- and intersexual
selection and viability, whereas no direct effect on male wattle characteristics or plumage traits of either sex was observed.
Female spur length was also negatively affected by T, but to a lesser extent than in males. In addition, the covariation between
male secondary sexual traits, which are reliable quality indicators, differed between T and control males, suggesting that
the manipulation may have altered the assessment of overall male quality by other males and females. In conclusion, the negative
effects of elevated yolk T on spur length, a trait which positively predicts male fitness, coupled with the lack of effects
on growth or other traits in both sexes, provided limited evidence for mothers being subjected to a trade-off between positive
and negative consequences of yolk T deposition on offspring traits and suggest that directional selection for reduced yolk
