Quantifying the emissions and concentrations of heavy metals in urban air is a prerequisite for assessing their health effects. In this paper a combination of measurements and modelling is used to assess the contribution from road traffic emissions. Concentrations of particulate heavy metals in air were measured simultaneously during 1 year at a densely trafficked street and at an urban background site in Stockholm, Sweden. Annual mean concentrations of cadmium were 50 times lower than the EU directive and for nickel and arsenic concentrations were 10 and six times lower, respectively. More than a factor of two higher concentrations was in general observed at the street in comparison to roof levels indicating the strong influence from local road traffic emissions. The only compound with a significantly decreasing trend in the urban background was Pb with 9.1 ng m?3 in 1995/96 compared to 3.4 ng m?3 2003/04. This is likely due to decreased emissions from wear of brake linings and reduced emissions due to oil and coal combustion in central Europe.Total road traffic emission factors for heavy metals were estimated using parallel measurements of NOx concentrations and knowledge of NOx emission factors. In general, the emission factors for the street were higher than reported in road tunnel measurements. This could partly be due to different driving conditions, since especially for metals which are mainly emitted from brake wear, more stop and go driving in the street compared to in road tunnels is likely to increase emissions. Total emissions were compared with exhaust emissions, obtained from the COPERT model and brake wear emissions based on an earlier study in Stockholm. For Cu, Ni and Zn the sum of brake wear and exhaust emissions agreed very well with estimated total emission factors in this study. More than 90% of the road traffic emissions of Cu were due to brake wear. For Ni more than 80% is estimated to be due to exhaust emissions and for Zn around 40% of road traffic emissions are estimated to be due to exhaust emissions. Pb is also mainly due to exhaust emissions (90%); a fuel Pb content of only 0.5 mg L?1 would give similar emission factor as that based on the concentration increment at the street. In an effort to garner consensus around environmental programs, practitioners have attempted to increase awareness about environmental threats and demonstrate the need for action. Nonetheless, how beliefs about the scope and severity of different types of environmental concerns shape support for management interventions are less clear. Using data from a telephone survey of residents of the Puget Sound region of Washington, we investigate how perceptions of the severity of different coastal environmental problems, along with other social factors, affect attitudes about policy options. We find that self-assessed environmental understanding and views about the seriousness of pollution, habitat loss, and salmon declines are only weakly related. Among survey respondents, women, young people, and those who believe pollution threatens Puget Sound are more likely to support policy measures such as increased enforcement and spending on restoration. Conversely, self-identified Republicans and individuals who view current regulations as ineffective tend to oppose governmental actions aimed at protecting and restoring Puget Sound. Support for one policy measure—tax credits for environmentally-friendly business practices—is not significantly affected by political party affiliation. These findings demonstrate that environmental awareness can influence public support for environmental policy tools. However, the nature of particular management interventions and other social forces can have important mitigating effects and need to be considered by practitioners attempting to develop environment-related social indicators and generate consensus around the need for action to address environmental problems. 相似文献

A kinetic study of the RB‐sensitized photooxygenation of a series of chlorohydroxyaromatic (ClArOH) water contaminants (phenolic and dihydroxybenzene derivatives) has been carried out. In addition, an exhaustive study on the possible interactions of RB electronically excited triplet and singlet states with ClArOH was also developed. The determination of relative rates of oxygen uptake upon sensitized irradiation, employing auxiliar selective quenchers of oxygen active species, indicate the contribution of both singlet molecular oxygen (ca. 71%) and Superoxide ion (ca. 26%) as the reactive pathways for ClArOH degradation. The substitution by chlorine atoms in position meta greatly decrease the photooxygenation rate of the phenolic derivatives. For the dihydroxybenzene series, increase in nuclear chlorination parallels a decrease in the photodegradation rate. Outdoors sensitized solar irradiation experiments on different ClArOH mixtures leads to measurable levels of oxygen after a few minutes exposure. From the environmental point of view, and ruling out the possibility of direct‐irradiation photoreactions, sensitized photooxygenation appears as an alternative pathway for ClArOH degradation, in competence with other naturally‐occurring photoprocesses involving reactive transient species. 相似文献

Summary The rate of extinction has accelerated to the point where we are probably losing one species per day right now, and we could well lose one million of Earth's 5–10 million species by the year 2000, and a good many more within the early decades of the next century. Plainly we cannot assist all species that face extinction within the foreseeable future. Conservationists have limited resources at their disposal, in the way of finance, scientific skills, and the like. Even were these resources to be increased several times over, we could not hope to save more than a proportion of all species that appear doomed to disappear: the processes of habitat disruption are too strongly underway to be halted in short order. But when we allocate funds to safeguard one species, we automatically deny those funds to other species. Already we support only a small fraction of all species under threat, and we may soon find ourselves in a situation where we can assist only a very marginal number of species facing extinction. Thus a key question arises: how are we to allocate our scarce resources in the most efficient way to safeguard species? Indeed we may now have reached a stage where there is merit in determining which species are most deserving of a place on the planet. Agonizing as it will be to make choices along these lines, conservation strategy should be as systematically selective as possible. This means that we should design analytic methodologies to enable us to assign our conservation resources to achieve maximum return in terms of numbers of species protected. In essence, a triage strategy. An expanded approach along these lines postulates a quantum advance in our planning of responses to the growing threatened-species problem: while the techniques of the past have certainly helped the situation, we cannot confront the much greater challenges of the future with an attitude of the same as before, only more so—the future will not be a simple extrapolation of the past, but will represent a qualitatively larger set of problems, which require an appropriately scaled-up response in our save-species campaigns.Dr Norman Myers is an expert in the study of endangered species and ecosystems. Any device for assessing the visual quality of air must necessarily have an extremely high sensitivity since, at times, the Rayleigh scattering of air molecules is the determining factor. The integrating nephel-ometer of Brewer and Beuttell has been adapted for air quality measurement. It records the volume scattering coefficient and was reliable in over a month of continuous operation. The results may be interpreted in terms of visual range; if so the inherent noise in the system corresponds to more than 500 miles visual range with a 100-second response time. The low cost, simplicity, and sensitivity of the device make it appear useful for rapid evaluation of visual air quality. The design of the instrument will be presented, including both the optical and electronic components. The results of operation of the instrument in Seattle during days of moderate air pollution will be used to illustrate the utility of the device. 相似文献

Abstract Penicillic Acid (PA) and Ochratoxin A (OA) are toxic fungal metabolites that are synergistic in combination. This interaction was investigated using mice which were dosed orally as follows: control, none; solvent control, 0.2 ml bicarbonate buffer; PA, 40 mg/kg; OA, 10 mg/kg and combination, 40 mg/kg PA + 10 mg/kg OA. The only significant histopathologic change observed was an acute multifocal toxic tubular nephrosis which appeared most severe in the combination‐treated mice killed on day 10. While the combination group had a death rate of 20% (5/25), no deaths occurred in the other treatment groups. The increased death rate and the extensive nephrotoxic findings in the combination group indicate a toxic interaction between OA and PA at sub‐lethal dose levels and is consistent with a renal site of action. 相似文献
