ABSTRACT

Stable heterogeneous catalysts for the oxidative removal of CO from air at ambient temperatures have been developed. An alumina support impregnated with PdCl2, CuCl2, and CuSO4 is described. Optimal activity was obtained with Pd 0.020 mol/kg, Cu 0.50 mol/kg, CuCl2 20-30% of total Cu, a 2- to 24-hr soak, filtration of surplus raffinate, and a 2- to 4-hr firing in air at 200-350 °C. The catalysts are effective at 20-26 °C and relative humidities in the 15-90% range. They are reversibly deactivated by completely dry or water-saturated air streams. These catalysts have been tested at space velocities up to 30,000 hr-1. In contact with <100 ppm CO, they are highly efficient, removing ~99% of the CO with contact times of ~120 msec (pseudo-first order k' > 25 sec-1). At much higher CO concentrations, the maximum CO loading rate—limited by the Cu(I) reoxidation rate—is approximately 17 m mol CO per Limol Pd per hour.  相似文献

Selected volatile organohalogen compounds (VOX) were investigated in urine samples from people living in different areas of the Gdańsk-Sopot-Gdynia TriCity (Poland). The analytes were isolated and preconcentrated using the so-called thin layer headspace technique with autogenous generation of the liquid sorbent. Final gas chromatographic determination was carried out by direct aqueous injection with electron capture detection. Analyte concentrations in drinking water ranged from not detected to approximately 8 microg/l (chloroform), depending on the source of drinking water in a given part of the TriCity (underground, surface or mixed). The corresponding urine levels were typically lower by about an order of magnitude. VOX levels in urine of people living in the parts of the TriCity supplied with drinking water containing elevated levels of the analytes were higher than the levels in urine of people whose drinking water originated from deep underground wells. The linear correlation coefficients for the relationships between total VOX and chloroform levels in drinking water and in urine were r2=0.65 and 0.88, respectively. The fraction of VOX excreted with urine in unchanged form did not exceed 20%.  相似文献

The influence of soil formation on copper sorption is documented based on chronosequences of soils from three river floodplains in Europe (Danube, Ebro and Elbe). Sequential extraction was used to fractionate copper in original and spiked soils in order to study the long-term and short-term behaviour of copper retention. Copper partitioning among defined geochemical fractions was mainly determined by soil pH and the contents of carbonates, organic matter and Fe-/Mn-oxides and hydroxides. Copper extracted with NH(2)OH.HCl correlated well with the contents of crystalline Fe-oxides and hydroxides, demonstrating increasing retention capacity with progressing soil development. Copper retained in original soils was found in more strongly bound fractions, whereas sorption of freshly added copper was primarily influenced by the presence of carbonates. Beyond the effect of progressing soil formation, variations in organic carbon contents due to different land use history affected the copper retention capacity of the investigated soils.  相似文献

The present study deals with the assessment of industrial water of an electronic component manufacturing unit with electroplating and its subsequent effects on soil and plants receiving the effluent. The physico-chemical parameters of the effluent samples showed higher value than that of ground water. The treated effluent was within the permissible limit. Microtox test was conducted and determined the degree of toxicity of untreated, treated effluents as well as the water sample collected at effluent discharge point of receiving river (confluence point). The physico- mechanical parameters of the soil samples were not changed due to irrigation of the treated effluent, but the concentration of metals were comparatively higher than the control soil. Higher accumulation of metals was found in the plant parts in naturally growing weeds and cultivated crop plant irrigated with treated effluent. Elevated accumulation of metals in Eichhornia crassipes and Marsilea sp. growing along the effluent channel has been identified as a potential source of biomonitoring of metals particularly for Cu and Ca and can be utilised for the removal of heavy metal from wastewater.  相似文献

The uptake, elimination and transformation of six PBDE congeners (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -209) were studied in juvenile common sole (Solea solea L.) exposed to spiked contaminated food over a three-month period, and then depurated over a five-month period. Methoxylated (MeO-) and hydroxylated (OH-) PBDEs were determined in fish plasma exposed to PBDEs and compared to those obtained in control fish. While all MeO- and some OH- congeners identified in fish plasma were found to originate from non-metabolic sources, several OH- congeners, i.e., OH-tetraBDEs and OH-pentaBDEs, were found to originate from fish metabolism. Among these, 4′-OH-BDE-49 was identified as a BDE-47 metabolite. Congener 4′-OH-BDE-101, identified here for the first time, may be the result of BDE-99 metabolic transformation. Our results unequivocally showed that PBDEs are metabolised in juvenile sole via the formation of OH- metabolites. However, this was not a major biotransformation route compared to biotransformation through debromination.  相似文献

The Do?ana National Park (Spain), one of the most important wildlife sites in the West of Europe, was affected (25 April 1998) by the spill of acidic waste rich in toxic metals (mainly zinc, lead, copper, etc.), arsenic and aromatic amines from the Aznalcollar mine accident. Micronuclei test with May Grunwald-Giemsa and with CREST-antikinetocore staining using DAPI as counter-staining were performed on peripheral blood erythrocytes from Algerian mice to evaluate genotoxic damage. Animals were collected in four locations each differently affected by the disaster. Higher frequencies of micronuclei and CREST-positive micronuclei were observed in the sites, which were reached by toxic sludge and contaminated water in comparison with those located within the park. The results obtained applying the two methods indicate that DAPI staining is more sensitive in detecting micronuclei. Genotoxic biomonitoring should be further carried out in the area to control the mutagenetic level in natural populations.  相似文献

Recent focus has been given to US forests as a sink for increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Current estimates of US forest carbon sequestration average approximately 20 Tg (i.e. 10(12) g) year. However, predictions of forest carbon sequestration often do not include the influence of hurricanes on forest carbon storage. Intense hurricanes occur two out of three years across the eastern US. A single storm can convert the equivalent of 10% of the total annual carbon sequestrated by US forests into dead and downed biomass. Given that forests require at least 15 years to recover from a severe storm, a large amount of forest carbon is lost either directly (through biomass destruction) or indirectly (through lost carbon sequestration capacity) due to hurricanes. Only 15% of the total carbon in destroyed timber is salvaged following a major hurricane. The remainder of the carbon is left to decompose and eventually return to the atmosphere. Short-term increases in forest productivity due to increased nutrient inputs from detritus are not fully compensated by reduced stem stocking, and the recovery time needed to recover leaf area. Therefore, hurricanes are a significant factor in reducing short-term carbon storage in US forests.  相似文献

Olivine, one of the most abundant minerals existing in nature, is explored as a CO2 carbonation agent for direct carbonation ofCO2 in flue gas. Olivine based CO2 capture is thermodynamically favorable and can form a stable carbonate for long-term storage.Experimental results have shown that water vapor plays an important role in improving CO2 carbonation rate and capacities. Otheroperation conditions including reaction temperature, initial CO2 concentration, residence time corresponding to the flow rate of CO2gas stream, and water vapor concentration also considerably affect the performance of the technology.  相似文献
