Various physico-chemical parameters, including fluoride (F−), were analyzed to understand the hydro-geochemistry of an aquifer in a semi-arid region of India. Furthermore, the quality
of the shallow and deep aquifer (using tube well and hand pumps) was also investigated for their best ecological use including
drinking, domestic, agricultural and other activities. Different multivariate techniques were applied to understand the groundwater
chemistry of the aquifer. Findings of the correlation matrix were strengthened by the factor analysis, and this shows that
salinity is mainly caused by magnesium salts as compared to calcium salts in the aquifer. The problem of salinization seems
mainly compounded by the contamination of the shallow aquifers by the recharging water. High factor loading of total alkalinity
and bicarbonates indicates that total alkalinity was mainly due to carbonates and bicarbonates of sodium. The concentration
of F− was found more in the deep aquifer than the shallow aquifer. Further, only a few groundwater samples lie below the permissible
limit of F−, and this indicates a risk of dental caries in the populace of the study area. The present study indicates that regular monitoring
of groundwater is an important step to avoid human health risks and to assess its quality for various ecological purposes. 相似文献

Developing a compact, simple, and productive solar still is a main challenge. This paper describes a simple modification of the solar still that significantly enhances its productivity. A laboratory scale of modified single effect double slope glass solar still with the opaque triangular north wall has been developed and tested for enhancement of productivity in sunny days of the summer season in the month of April. The experiments on still have been carried out under three levels of water depths from 1 to 3 cm and compared it with the performance of conventional still of double slope single effect solar still of the same size. It is clear from the observations that opaque type still gave maximum distillate of 1793 ml at 1 cm depth of water while conventional still could produce only 1519 ml for the same depth of water. Also, for 2 and 3 cm depth of water, the opaque type still found to be more productive than conventional double slope solar still. As the former produced 1532 and 1464 ml while the latter produced 1328 and 1235 ml, for 2 and 3 cm depth of water, respectively. 相似文献

In order to search the degradability of kraft lignin, the potential bacterial strains Bacillus subtilis (GU193980) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (GU193981) were isolated, screened and applied in axenic and co-culture conditions. Results revealed that mixed culture showed better decolorization efficiency (80%) and reduction of pollution parameters (COD 73% and BOD 62%) than axenic culture. This indicated syntrophic growth of these two bacteria rather than any antagonistic effect. The HPLC analysis of degraded samples of kraft lignin has shown the reduction in peak area compared to control, suggesting that decrease in color intensity might be largely attributed to the degradation of lignin by isolated bacteria. Further, the GC–MS analysis showed that most of the compounds detected in control were diminished after bacterial treatment. Further, the seed germination test using Phaseolus aureus has supported the detoxification of bacterial decolorized kraft lignin for environmental safety. All these observations have revealed that the developed bacterial co-culture was capable for the effective degradation and decolorization of lignin containing rayon grade pulp mill wastewater for environmental safety. 相似文献

The HG-AAS technique was used to estimate the soil selenium status of the agricultural lands of northern parts of India. The drier lands where lesser rains were received or where less irrigation water was available in Rajasthan and southern parts of the Haryana states had above normal soil selenium levels. These soils were also found to be alkaline. Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and northern parts of the Haryana states had normal levels of selenium in their soils, except with slightly lower selenium levels in a few areas that were affected by floods along the river Yamuna. The environmentally friendly and safe disposal of waste discarded rubber tyres are becoming a matter of serious concern across the globe because of its detrimental effect on health, environment and ecological systems. The paper aims at assessing the impact of waste rubber tyre inclusion on the geotechnical properties of clayey soil. Discarded rubber in the form of crumb rubber of size ranging between 0.8 and 2 mm varying from 0 to 10% was used in this investigation. Several tests, namely compaction, unconfined compressive strength, split tensile strength, California bearing ratio, consolidation and swelling pressure, along with microstructural studies have been carried out on different combinations of clayey soil and crumb rubber. The results of the study demonstrate that the inclusion of crumb rubber reduces the maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content of the clay. The addition of crumb rubber up to 5% in the clay causes an insignificant increase in the unconfined compressive strength and split tensile strength. Compared with the clayey soil, the inclusion of crumb rubber up to 5% improves the California bearing ratio of the clayey soil in unsoaked condition. It has also noticed that addition of crumb rubber helps in reducing the compression index and swelling pressure of the clayey soil. 相似文献

The main emissions from coal combustion at thermal power plants are carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and airborne inorganic particles such as fly ash and soot; CO2, methane, and CFCs are greenhouse gases. A series of novel N-alkyl-N-[1-(2-hydroxyphenyl) ethyl]amines were synthesized as potential new agents to control pests. Their structures were confirmed on the basis of IR, NMR and elemental analyses. Six new N-alkyl-N-[1-(2-hydroxyphenyl) ethyl]amines were prepared by reduction of corresponding Schiff bases using sodium borohydride in 80–87 % yields. These compounds were tested for their antifungal activity against two pathogenic fungi viz., Rhizoctonia bataticola ITCC 0482 and Sclerotium rolfsii ITCC 5226 and for insecticidal activity against insects of stored grain pest Callosobruchus analis. Fungicidal bioassay revealed that compound N-Decyl-N-[1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]amine, was highly effective against R. bataticola (ED50 6.86 mg L?1) which was comparable with that of commercial fungicide hexaconazole (ED50 6.35 mg L?1). Also compounds N-Heptyl-N-[1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]amine, N-Octyl-N-[1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]amine and N-Nonyl-N-[1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]amine displayed promising fungitoxicity against same pathogen. However, compound N-Heptyl-N-[1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]amine was also found to be effective against S. rolfsii (ED50 4.92 mg L?1 as against 1.27 mg L?1 for hexaconazole). Compound N-Hexyl-N-[1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]amine was most effective as insecticide followed by compound N-Octyl-N-[1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]amine. LC50 values for these compounds were 155.0 and 275.0 mg L?1 respectively as against 36.70 mg L?1 for commercial insecticide dichlorovos. The results obtained from bioassays indicate that this class of compounds can be utilized for the design of new substances endowed with pesticidal activities. 相似文献
