Air pollution has emerged as an imminent issue in modernsociety. Prediction of pollutant levels is an importantresearch topic in atmospheric environment today. For fulfillingsuch prediction, the use of neural network (NN), and inparticular the multi-layer perceptrons, has presented to be acost-effective technique superior to traditional statisticalmethods. But their training, usually with back-propagation (BP)algorithm or other gradient algorithms, is often with certaindrawbacks, such as: 1) very slow convergence, and 2) easilygetting stuck in a local minimum. In this paper, a newlydeveloped method, particle swarm optimization (PSO) model, isadopted to train perceptrons, to predict pollutant levels, andas a result, a PSO-based neural network approach is presented. This paper discusses the REAP1 model and its application for the analysis of CO2 reduction and waste management policies for Japanese petrochemicals. The pros and cons of this modelling approach in comparison to other tools is elaborated. This is followed by a discussion of the model code and the modelling results. The results show that CO2 policies can have significant impacts on waste flows and waste policies can have significant CO2 benefits. As a consequence both effects must be considered in policy assessment. Pricing instruments are recommended instead of regulations because of the complex physical relations in the materials life cycle that extend beyond sector boundaries. Understanding human behavior is vital to developing interventions that effectively lead to proenvironmental behavior change, whether the focus is at the individual or societal level. However, interventions in many fields have historically lacked robust forms of evaluation, which makes it hard to be confident that these conservation interventions have successfully helped protect the environment. We conducted a systematic review to assess how effective nonpecuniary and nonregulatory interventions have been in changing environmental behavior. We applied the Office of Health Assessment and Translation systematic review methodology. We started with more than 300,000 papers and reports returned by our search terms and after critical appraisal of quality identified 128 individual studies that merited inclusion in the review. We classified interventions by thematic area, type of intervention, the number of times audiences were exposed to interventions, and the length of time interventions ran. Most studies reported a positive effect (n = 96). The next most common outcome was no effect (n = 28). Few studies reported negative (n = 1) or mixed (n = 3) effects. Education, prompts, and feedback interventions resulted in positive behavior change. Combining multiple interventions was the most effective. Neither exposure duration nor frequency affected the likelihood of desired behavioral change. Comparatively few studies tested the effects of voluntary interventions on non-Western populations (n = 17) or measured actual ecological outcome behavior (n = 1). Similarly, few studies examined conservation devices (e.g., energy-efficient stoves) (n = 9) and demonstrations (e.g., modeling the desired behavior) (n = 5). The pattern and characteristics of diving in 14 female northern rockhopper penguins, Eudyptes chrysocome moseleyi, were studied at Amsterdam Island (37°50′S; 77°31′E) during the guard stage, using electronic time–depth recorders. Twenty-nine
foraging trips (27 daily foraging trips and two longer trips including one night) with a total of 16 572 dives of ≥3 m were
recorded. Females typically left the colony at dawn and returned in the late afternoon, spending an average of 12 h at sea,
during which they performed ∼550 dives. They were essentially inshore foragers (mean estimated foraging range 6 km), and mainly
preyed upon the pelagic euphausiid Thysanoessa gregaria, fishes and squid being only minor components of the diet. Mean dive depth, dive duration, and post-dive intervals were 18.4 m
(max. depth 109 m), 57 s (max. dive duration 168 s), and 21 s (37% of dive duration), respectively. Descent and ascent rates
averaged 1.2 and 1.0 ms−1 and were, together with dive duration, significantly correlated with dive depth. Birds spent 18% of their total diving time
in dives reaching 15 to 20 m, and the mean maximum diving efficiency (bottom time:dive cycle duration) occurred for dives
reaching 15 to 35 m. The most remarkable feature of diving behaviour in northern rockhopper penguins was the high percentage
of time spent diving during daily foraging trips (on average, 69% of their time at sea); this was mainly due to a high dive
frequency (∼44 dives per hour), which explained the high total vertical distance travelled during one trip (18 km on average).
Diving activity at night was greatly reduced, suggesting that, as other penguins, E. chrysocome moseleyi are essentially diurnal, and locate prey using visual cues.

Incidental mortality of harbour porpoises, Phocoena phocoena, from captures in fishing gear has been documented consistently as severe in some European waters. Since fishing effort varies
greatly among regions, management units must be defined for more effective conservation of this species. In this study, analysis
of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction fragments was performed to investigate the population structure of harbour porpoises
in the Baltic Sea, the joint Kattegat–Skagerrak Seas and off the west coast of Norway. Mitochondrial DNA of 65 harbour porpoises
collected from three regions was analysed with nine restriction enzymes. Analysis of the heterogeneity in the frequency distribution
of haplotypes among provisional subpopulations revealed significant differences, which supports the recognition of three different
subpopulations and thus three separate management units. Furthermore, indices of haplotypic diversity (range: 0.211 to 0.628)
and nucleotide diversity (range: 0.070 to 0.168) of these provisional subpopulations were much lower than for western North
Atlantic subpopulations, which is consistent with the view that harbour porpoises in European waters, particularly in the
Baltic Sea, are depleted.

The chlorophyll derivatives, especially pyrochlorins, from macrobentho-pelagic fecal pellets were separated and identified using reversed-phase high-per-formance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). HPLC-frit-fast atom bombardment (FAB)-MS analysis of fecal pellet extracts was performed, and the ions at m/z (mass-to-charge ratio), 534 [M]+, 827 [M+H]+ and 812 [M]+ as base peaks contirm the presence of pyropheophorbide a, pyropheophytin b and pyropheophytin a, respectively. Identification of pyrochlorins in fecal pellets suggests that decarbomethoxylation of chlorophylls can occur during bentho-pelagic grazing and that pyrochlorins in sedimentary environments may be derived in part from fecal pellets. 相似文献

While the cathode ray tube (CRT) funnel containing lead could be transported to a smelting facility to recover lead, which could be an available option in domestic, a proper technology to recycle a CRT panel must be developed. Thus, it was suggested that CRT panel glass be used as aggregates of concrete blocks and clay bricks. Samples of blocks and bricks were fabricated with CRT powders and tested to measure their strength and absorption rate to determine their qualities, and environmental soundness was determined by measuring the leaching rate of hazardous metals. For concrete blocks, CRT panel glass powders incorporated as aggregates up to 40 % replacing stone powder was proposed as the proper condition for manufacturing blocks. Around 2 % of CRT panel incorporated into clay brick to substitute Kaoline was suggested to fabricate the best quality of clay brick. Results of leaching test met the criteria with much less concentration of hazardous metals, even lead compound containing in the CRT funnel. To conclude, the use of CRT panel powder after crushing it to the proper size as an aggregate of concrete blocks or clay bricks could be one of the appropriate alternatives to recycle for CRT glass waste being generated drastically in a short term. 相似文献

In this study, we propose a process making calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate and recovering absorbent using ammonia absorbent, carbon dioxide, and industrial waste. The main objective of this study is to confirm the possibility of carbon capture and utilization based on waste materials. We assumed desulfurization gypsum and construction waste (ready mixed concrete washing water, waste concrete, etc.) are CaSO4, Ca(OH)2, respectively. And concentration of simulated carbon dioxide gas was 15 vol% similar to flue gas. Calcium carbonate was produced by combination reaction between ionic CO2 in absorbent and metal ion in the solid waste. Experiments were conducted at normal temperature and pressure.
