The rocky intertidal mussel Mytilus californianus is exposed to potentially damaging thermal conditions during low tide. However, because the temperatures of ectothermic organisms are driven by multiple climatic factors, we do not fully understand what the body temperatures of intertidal invertebrates are under field conditions, or how thermal stress varies between intertidal sites. We designed a temperature logger that thermally matches (similar size, color, morphology and thermal inertia) living mussels of the species M. californianus, and tested its ability to provide realistic measurements of body temperature in the field. As part of these tests, we examined the propensity of M. californianus to gape, a behavior in which the mussel opens its shell valves, and which may permit evaporative cooling. Because our instruments were unable to mimic this behavior, we tested the degree to which gaping contributes to animal cooling by exposing M. californianus to a range of climatic conditions while recording body temperatures, gaping behavior and water loss. Results indicated no significant influence of gaping on body temperature. Tests comparing temperatures of loggers to those of real mussels under laboratory and field conditions showed that thermally matched loggers recorded temperatures within a few degrees of living animals and that unmodified loggers regularly incurred errors of up to 14°C. We then deployed a series of thermally matched loggers at two sites in central Oregon (Boiler Bay and Strawberry Hill) previously hypothesized to display site-specific differences in aerial temperature, and at various wave-exposure regimes within each site. Significant differences were demonstrated between sites using a subset of temperature metrics in a multivariate analysis. Yearly peaks in maximum temperature, average daily maximum temperature, and degree hours were useful in discriminating between sites. In 2001, wave-exposed sites at Strawberry Hill displayed fewer degree–hours than wave-protected sites, but an equivalent or greater maximum temperature. In 2002 both of these metrics were significantly lower in wave-exposed sites. In the sex-role reversed pipefish Syngnathus typhle females compete for access to males and males are choosy. Females develop a temporary ornament when competing over mates
with other females and when performing nuptial dances with males. This ornament is an amplification of the normal striped
pattern in these fishes. We here show experimentally that (1) the contrast of this normal pattern forecasts the extent to
which the ornament is shown, (2) contrast and ornamentation honestly signal female quality (egg numbers), (3) contrast and
ornamentation accurately predict female mating success, (4) contrast is a phenotypically plastic trait specifically exaggerated
under situations of female – female competition, and (5) neither contrast nor ornament are energetically expensive to the
females (i.e., they are independent of short-term nutritional status). Hence, as predicted in sex-role reversed species, ornament
design is constrained by costs to female fecundity: an energetically demanding ornament would impair on a female's ability
to produce eggs. The type of ornament described here is the expected one, costly for reasons other than being energetically
expensive to produce.

The Mid-Atlantic Integrated Assessment (MAIA) and its partner, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) have developed a graduate-level course focused on successful application of science by decision-makers to address a particular problem. Students conduct a literature review, interview the decision-makers and scientists, and synthesize and document the management problem, the science that was applied to that problem, and other issues that might constrain or drive the solution (e.g., legalities, social pressures, expense, politics, personalities, etc.). Students also quantify the results, evaluate who the intended audience is and how they most appropriately target them, and determine if there are other management problems that could be addressed with the science. The final products are short publications geared towards other decision-makers who might have a similar problem and might be seeking successful innovative solutions. MAIA is distributing these short publications to decision-makers throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. Understanding the ecology, condition, and changes of coastal areas requires data from many sources. Broad-scale and long-term ecological questions, such as global climate change, biodiversity, and cumulative impacts of human activities, must be addressed with databases that integrate data from several different research and monitoring programs. Various barriers, including widely differing data formats, codes, directories, systems, and metadata used by individual programs, make such integration troublesome. Coastal data partnerships, by helping overcome technical, social, and organizational barriers, can lead to a better understanding of environmental issues, and may enable better management decisions. Characteristics of successful data partnerships include a common need for shared data, strong collaborative leadership, committed partners willing to invest in the partnership, and clear agreements on data standards and data policy. Emerging data and metadata standards that become widely accepted are crucial. New information technology is making it easier to exchange and integrate data. Data partnerships allow us to create broader databases than would be possible for any one organization to create by itself. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the concentrations of trace elements in sediment samples taken from impermeable urban areas of a city with predominantly agroindustrial development characteristics. For this, samples were taken every month from paved streets in the city of Toledo, Paraná State (PR), Brazil. Thus, trace element levels were obtained through analysis performed by optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. Levels of total organic carbon were also obtained through the dry combustion method. When compared to local background levels, the trace element levels were shown to be enriched in the following percentage proportions: barium (Ba) (45.4%), copper (Cu) (48.6%), chromium (Cr) (37.2%), manganese (Mn) (81.6%), nickel (Ni) (0%), lead (Pb) (40%), zinc (Zn) (283.7%), magnesium (Mg) (34.3%), and sodium (Na) (250.2%), whereas the carbon (C) percentages were around 1%. The most significant enrichment factors occurred for Ba, Cr, Pb, Zn, Mg, and Na. The highest rates occurred in geoaccumulation where the sediments were enriched by zinc. According to the principal guidelines, the concentrations obtained for cadmium (Cd), Cr, Cu, Ni, and Zn can cause adverse environmental impacts. 相似文献

Bangladesh is currently the subject of the world's largest mass arsenic poisoning in history. Groundwater throughout Bangladesh
and West Bengal is contaminated with naturally occurring arsenic from the alluvial and deltaic sediments that form the region's
aquifers. It has been estimated that 75 million people are at risk of developing health effects associated with the ingestion
of arsenic. This project focuses on the use of microorganisms such as bacteria and algae to remove arsenic from water. Arsenic
in the arsenite form was used in the studies. Experiments were conducted with a common alga and wastewater bacteria. A common
green algae Scenedesmus abundans was used for determining arsenic uptake in batch experiments. Results of the experiments indicated that the algae biosorption
could be modeled by the conventional Langmuir isotherm model. Algae morphology studies indicated that the algae cells were
impacted due to the presence of arsenic as evidenced by clumping or loss of cell clusters. The wastewater bacteria also were
capable of high percent of arsenic removal. Results indicate that microbial uptake of arsenic may be a viable method of pretreatment
of arsenic contaminated water. However algae and sludge disposal would pose a problem and will have to be dealt with accordingly. 相似文献

The significance of oil-mineral aggregate (OMA) formation on the effectiveness of the in situ shoreline treatment options of natural attenuation (natural recovery) and sediment relocation (surf washing) was examined during field trials on two mixed-sediment (sand and pebble) beaches experimentally oiled with IF-30 oil. At both sites, the amount of oil remaining in the experimental plots was dramatically reduced within five days after sediment relocation treatments. Time-series microscopy and image analysis of breaker-zone water samples demonstrate that OMA formation occurred naturally on the oiled beaches at both sites and was accelerated by the sediment relocation procedure. Lower concentrations of OMA in the breaker zone at Site 3 are attributed to the higher wave-energy levels at this site that presumably facilitated more rapid OMA dispersion. The granulometry and mineralogy of beach sediment and of subtidal sediment trap samples indicate that the material settling in nearshore waters originated from the relocated sediment and that a portion of the finer sediment was probably transported out of the study region before settling. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis demonstrated that a significant fraction of the oil dispersed into nearshore waters and sediments by interaction with mineral fines was biodegraded. The fact that little or no residual oil was found stranded on the shore in areas adjacent to the experimental plots and that only small amounts of oil were found in nearshore subtidal sediments and sediment trap samples suggests that a large fraction of the oil lost from the experimental plots may have been dispersed in the form of relatively buoyant OMA. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: The objective of this work is to determine the effects of extension of a stream network through land drainage activities during the late 1800s on the hydrologic response of a watershed. The Mackinaw River Basin in Central Illinois was chosen as the focus and the pre‐land and post‐land drainage activity hydrologic responses were obtained through convolution of the hill slope and channel responses and compared. The hill slope response was computed using the kinematic wave model and the channel response was determined using the geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph method. Our hypothesis was that the hydrologic response of the basin would exhibit the characteristic effects of settlement (i.e., increases in peak discharges and decreases in times to peak). This, indeed, is what occurred; however, the increase in peak discharges diminishes as scale increases, leaving only the decrease in times to peak. At larger scales, the dispersive effects of the longer hill slope lengths in the pre‐settlement scenario seem to balance the depressive effects of the longer path lengths in the post‐settlement scenario, thus the pre‐settlement and post‐settlement peak discharges are approximately equivalent. At small scales, the dispersion caused by the hill slope is larger in the pre‐settlement case; thus, the post‐settlement peak discharges are greater than the pre‐settlement. 相似文献
