Abstract This paper summarizes the Air & Waste Management Association’s International Specialty Conference, "Regional Photochemical Measurement and Modeling Studies," held in San Diego, California, on November 8-12,1993. The purpose of the conference was to facilitate exchange of information and to initiate better communication and interaction among scientists, air quality managers, regulators, and others involved in or applying tools (models and measurements to support the modeling efforts) that can be used to develop equitable and effective emissions management practices for attainment of ozone standards. Attendees heard more than 350 presentations from authors representing nearly 30 air quality and meteorological measurement and modeling studies from 18 countries. While the primary emphasis of the conference was technical, two policy sessions were included (Plenary and Concluding Sessions) to place the technical results in perspective with the policy issues. The technical agenda was divided into three subjects: Analysis of Field Measurements (results and interpretation), Modeling (status and results), and Other Topics. Papers presented at the conference are being published in a variety of journals or books to meet the needs of the scientific and policy communities. A complete bibliographical listing of the papers presented at the conference is included with this paper. An unexpected outcome of the conference has been the development of an initiative for continuing the intercomparison of goals and scientific findings from regional air quality studies in Europe and North America, entitled “Regional Oxidants Programs Intercomparison” (ROxPIn). Carbon monoxide (CO) exposures were measured inside a motor vehicle during 88 standardized drives on a major urban arterial highway, El Camino Real (traffic volume of 30,500-45,000 vehicles per day), over a 13-1/2 month period. On each trip (lasting between 31 and 61 minutes), the test vehicle drove the same 5.9-mile segment of roadway in both directions, for a total of 11.8 miles, passing through 20 intersections with traffic lights (10 in each direction) in three California cities (Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and Los Altos). Earlier tests showed that the test vehicle was free of CO intrusion. For the 88 trips, the mean CO concentration was 9.8 ppm, with a standard deviation of 5.8 ppm. Of nine covariates that were examined to explain the variability in the mean CO exposures observed on the 88 trips (ambient CO at two fixed stations, atmospheric stability, seasonal trend function, time of day, average surrounding vehicle count, trip duration, proportion of time stopped at lights, and instrument type), a fairly strong seasonal trend was found. A model consisting of only a single measure of traffic volume and a seasonal trend component had substantial predictive power (R2 = 0.68); by contrast, the ambient CO levels, although partially correlated with average exposures, contributed comparatively little predictive power to the model. The CO exposures experienced while drivers waited at the red lights at an intersection ranged from 6.8 to 14.9 ppm and differed considerably from intersection to intersection. A model also was developed to relate the short-term variability of exposures to averaging time for trip times ranging from 1 to 20 minutes using a variogram approach to deal with the serial autocorrelation. This study shows: (1) the mass balance equation can relate exterior CO concentrations as a function of time to interior CO concentrations; (2) CO exposures on urban arterial highways vary seasonally; (3) momentary CO exposures experienced behind red lights vary with the intersection; and (4) an averaging time model can simulate exposures during short trips (20 minutes or less) on urban arterial highways. 相似文献

Ecosystem restoration in south Florida is a state and national priority centered on the Everglades wetlands. However, urban
development pressures affect the restoration potential and remaining habitat functions of the natural undeveloped areas. Land
use (LU) planning often focuses at the local level, but a better understanding of the cumulative effects of small projects
at the landscape level is needed to support ecosystem restoration and preservation. The South Florida Ecosystem Portfolio
Model (SFL EPM) is a regional LU planning tool developed to help stakeholders visualize LU scenario evaluation and improve
communication about regional effects of LU decisions. One component of the SFL EPM is ecological value (EV), which is evaluated
through modeled ecological criteria related to ecosystem services using metrics for (1) biodiversity potential, (2) threatened
and endangered species, (3) rare and unique habitats, (4) landscape pattern and fragmentation, (5) water quality buffer potential,
and (6) ecological restoration potential. In this article, we demonstrate the calculation of EV using two case studies: (1)
assessing altered EV in the Biscayne Gateway area by comparing 2004 LU to potential LU in 2025 and 2050, and (2) the cumulative
impact of adding limestone mines south of Miami. Our analyses spatially convey changing regional EV resulting from conversion
of local natural and agricultural areas to urban, industrial, or extractive use. Different simulated local LU scenarios may
result in different alterations in calculated regional EV. These case studies demonstrate methods that may facilitate evaluation
of potential future LU patterns and incorporate EV into decision making. 相似文献

Soybean oil (SBO) was dimerized and the crude dimer acid product reacted with 1,2-phenylene diamine at 210 ± 5 °C under inert
atmosphere to obtain fatty polyamide (FPA). The FPA was used to modify a commercial alkyd resin by reacting a mixture of the
alkyd resin with 5 wt% of FPA at 120 °C for 80 min under inert atmosphere. The FTIR spectrum of the FPA modified resin showed
evidence of higher degree of H-bonding than was found for the unmodified alkyd. White gloss coatings of 15, 20, 25, and 30%
solids were formulated from the modified and unmodified resins and examined for performance with respect to: leveling, sag
resistance, drying time, pigment settling, skinning tendency and film hardness. Results showed that the unmodified alkyd coatings
exhibited good leveling but poor sag resistance at all solid contents. In contrast, FPA modified alkyd coatings combined good
leveling with high sag resistance indicating their thixotropic nature. A strong tendency to pigment settling was observed
for unmodified alkyd coatings but was not observed in the FPA modified alkyd coatings. The modified alkyd coatings showed
skinning while the unmodified alkyd coatings did not skin. A 30% solids coating formulation of the FPA modified resin showed
shorter surface dry time but longer hard dry time than the unmodified alkyd resin coating. 相似文献

Place theory offers no explanation of the developmental processes by which place attachment arises. Drawing on recent findings in human attachment theory, this study offers a developmental model of the process by which place attachment emerges from a childhood place experience. A pattern of positively affected experiences of place in childhood are generalised into an unconscious internal working model of place which manifests subjectively as a long-term positively affected bond to place known as place attachment. Qualitative analysis of adult remembrance of childhood place experience provides support for this model and finds important parallels in the developmental processes underpinning place attachment and human attachment as well as some differences. 相似文献

Schedule 11 of the Environment Act 1995 underpins the requirement for consultation on air quality issues. The ongoing air quality review and assessment process represents one of the largest locally based science policy and communication initiatives ever undertaken in the UK. This paper outlines the practice of consultation and communication for Air Quality Management (AQM) and reviews the interaction between Environmental Health professionals, as the leading actor in the AQM process and other stakeholders involved in air quality consultation, including the public. Results are presented from a widespread questionnaire survey of English local authorities. Data indicate that the majority of air quality consultation has been carried out with statutory consultees (by sending the review and assessment reports) and the public (via websites and leaflets) in the form of information dissemination. 相似文献

Recent publications by Pogge (Global ethics: seminal essays. St. Paul: Paragon House 2008) and by Singer (The life you can save: acting now to end world poverty. New York: Random House 2009) have resuscitated a debate over the justifiability of famine relief between Singer and ecologist Garrett Hardin in the 1970s.
Yet that debate concluded with a general recognition that (a) general considerations of development ethics presented more
compelling ethical problems than famine relief; and (b) some form of development would be essential to avoiding the problems
of growth noted by Hardin. Better than renewing the debate, we should recognize two points. First, food needs do indeed evoke
a moral response that is more direct and compelling than the philosophical positions often generated to rationalize a duty
to bring aid. As such the argument for feeding hungry people cannot be generalized into a paradigm for development ethics
without distortions that undercut the morally valid elements in Singer’s original argument. Second, contrary to prevailing
assumptions in present day development ethics, food aid and famine relief continue to be important priorities for international
agencies, notably the World Food Program. Emergency food assistance, the nominal topic of Singer’s original article, thus
is an important issue for agricultural as well as development ethics, though one that should indeed be seen as distinct from
more complex duties to address the conditions of chronic poverty and underdevelopment. 相似文献

The cross-reactivity of egg yolk antibodies specific to antigens of Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium to killed bacterial cells of common Salmonella serovars were tested using an indirect Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Egg yolk antibodies were produced against purified fimbriae, flagella and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of S. Enteritidis strain ATCC13076 and flagella, LPS and outer membrane proteins (OMP) of S. Typhimurium strain ATCC13311. For immunological specificity of egg yolk antibodies against killed bacterial cells, we found that the titers of the anti-S. Enteritidis egg yolk antibodies were higher than those of the anti-S. Typhimurium antibodies. In the evaluation of cross-reactivity of these egg yolk antibodies to various Salmonella serovars, we observed that the anti-S. Enteritidis antibodies exhibited more specific affinity than those of the anti-S. Typhimurium antibodies. All S. Enteritidis strains reacted specifically with the anti-S. Enteritidis fimbrial and flagellar egg yolk antibody whereas anti-S. Enteritidis LPS and anti-S. Typhimurium LPS, OMP and flagellar antibodies displayed non-specific reactivity to all Salmonella serovars used in this study. This finding suggests that it may be possible to design a anti-fimbrial egg yolk antibody of S. Enteritidis as a diagnostic tool and a cocktail of OMP and LPS antigens of S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium could be used for administering broad spectrum passive immunity to protect against the colonization of pathogenic Salmonella strains in food animals. 相似文献

Three different mass-transfer expressions are employed within the Model of Aerosol, Gas, and Interfacial Chemistry (MAGIC) to study gas-phase molecular chlorine and bromine production from NaCl and NaBr aerosols, respectively. Simulations of chamber experiments are performed in which NaCl aerosols react with gas-phase ozone in the presence of UV light, in order to identify the importance of the Knudsen number and mass-transfer expression in systems with varying contributions from gas-phase, aqueous-phase, and interfacial chemistry. In the case of NaBr aerosols, simulations are performed of both dark and photolytic conditions. A range of Knudsen numbers spanning the continuum, transition and free-molecular regimes is studied. Particle size is varied over three orders of magnitude, and particle concentration is changed to keep either (a) total aerosol volume or (b) total aerosol surface area constant. When total aerosol volume is constant, the total amount of surface area available for interfacial reaction increases linearly with Knudsen number. Consequently peak gas-phase Cl2 and Br2 concentrations increase by two orders of magnitude from the continuum regime to the free-molecular regime. When total aerosol surface area is constant, total aerosol volume is inversely proportional to Knudsen number, with lesser volume being available at higher Knudsen numbers. Consequently Cl? depletion in the kinetic regime leads to most gas-phase Cl2 being produced in the transition regime. Gas-phase Br2 concentration trends are determined by aqueous-phase reaction mechanisms, leading to a monotonic decrease in production with Knudsen number. At all Knudsen numbers, more gas-phase bromine is produced in the photolytic case than in the dark case, the difference being significant in the transition regime. Results of this study suggest that halogen production is insensitive to the mass-transfer expression used in the simulations. 相似文献
