This paper reports a study of the anaerobic biodegradation of non-ionic surfactants alkyl polyglucosides applying the method by measurement of the biogas production in digested sludge. Three alkyl polyglucosides with different length alkyl chain and degree of polymerization of the glucose units were tested. The influence of their structural parameters was evaluated, and the characteristics parameters of the anaerobic biodegradation were determined. Results show that alkyl polyglucosides, at the standard initial concentration of 100 mgC L?1, are not completely biodegradable in anaerobic conditions because they inhibit the biogas production. The alkyl polyglucoside having the shortest alkyl chain showed the fastest biodegradability and reached the higher percentage of final mineralization. The anaerobic process was well adjusted to a pseudo first-order equation using the carbon produced as gas during the test; also, kinetics parameters and a global rate constant for all the involved metabolic process were determined. This modeling is helpful to evaluate the biodegradation or the persistence of alkyl polyglucosides under anaerobic conditions in the environment and in the wastewater treatment. 相似文献
Mixed conducting membranes can be used for the separation of oxygen from air in both coal gasification and oxy-fuel power plants. In this review paper, the basic perovskite and non-perovskite structures, composition, properties and performance are addressed. Two typical perovskite materials, BSCF and LSCF, show promise in industrial applications as their oxygen fluxes are at least one order of magnitude higher than non-perovskite membranes. BSCF membranes are now delivering oxygen fluxes in excess of 5 ml min?1 cm?2. Latest developments in perovskite composition, effects of impurities in membrane performance and membrane geometry are discussed giving an insight into the potential utilisation in clean energy delivery processes. Strategies for improving membranes performance using unit operations with different geometries and possible future technologies are also addressed. 相似文献
This study presents information on the use of medicinal animals in a semiarid area of northeast Brazil, a region where animals have recognized importance in local popular medicine. The information on the use of animals for medicinal purposes was obtained through semi-structured questionnaires, complemented by free interviews and informal conversations. The results obtained showed that the residents of the area studied utilize a considerable richness of animal species (n = 42) for medicinal purposes, as occurs in other areas of Brazil’s semiarid region, demonstrating that zootherapy represents an alternative form of health care that is important to the inhabitants of the region. There is a need for new investigations on medicinal fauna, aimed at promoting the sustainable use of eventual medicinal species and preserving popular knowledge associated with the use of animal species. 相似文献
Biodiesel wash water is a contaminating industrial effluent that must be treated prior to disposal. The use of this effluent as a low-cost alternative cultivation medium for microalgae could represent a viable supplementary treatment. We cultivated 11 microalgae species with potential use for biodiesel production to assess their growth capacities in biodiesel industrial washing waters. Only Monoraphidium contortum, Ankistrodesmus sp., Chlorococcum sp., and one unidentified Chlorophyceae species grew effectively in that effluent. M. contortum showed the highest growth capacity and had the second highest fatty acid content (267.9 mg g−1 of DW), predominantly producing palmitic (20.9%), 7,10,13-hexadecatrienoic (14%), oleic (16.2%), linoleic (10.5%), and linolenic acids (23.2%). In the second phase of the experiment, the microalgae were cultivated in biodiesel wash water at 75% of its initial concentration as well as in WC (control) medium. After 21 days of cultivation, 25.8 and 7.2% of the effluent nitrate and phosphate were removed, respectively, and the chemical oxygen demand was diminished by 31.2%. These results suggest the possibility of cultivating biodiesel producing microalgae in industrial wash water effluents.
Dispersal and migratory behaviours are often important determinants of gene flow in wild species, and we have studied their
role using ringing-recapture data in the Portuguese population of Miniopterus schreibersii, a cave-dwelling bat that forms large maternity colonies. Juvenile dispersal, usually a major agent of gene flow, appears
to be negligible, as young females never settled to give birth in foreign colonies. Likewise, there was virtually no dispersal
of adult females to foreign maternity colonies. This strong philopatry virtually eliminated female-mediated gene flow, but
we found a great potential for male-mediated gene flow among colonies, as regional migrations temporarily joined both sexes
from different colonies in the same roosts, during the mating season. In fact, females from some colonies were more likely
to mate with males from foreign colonies than from their own, thus potentially bringing home genes of foreign males. In spite
of this abundant gene flow, we found a pattern of isolation by distance and even strong barriers to gene flow, which is explained
by the fact that migrations were usually too short to allow direct flow among distant colonies. We concluded that potential
gene flow is influenced by the distance between colonies and the availability of mating roosts between them. In addition,
we found this flow to be asymmetrical, with a dominant direction from the largest to the smallest colonies. Our ringing-recapture
estimates of potential gene flow based on dispersal and migratory behaviour are compatible with the genetic structure of the
population for both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA. Our conclusions have implications for the conservation of bats with a spatial
behaviour similar to that of M. schreibersii. Colonies should be managed individually because strict female philopatry not only promotes their isolation but also minimises
the contribution of immigration in rescuing declining colonies. Furthermore, the results underline the importance of preserving
mating roosts to maintain gene flow among colonies. 相似文献
The exhaust emission of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) considered toxic to human health were investigated on two spark ignition light duty vehicles, one being gasohol (Gasohol, in Brazil, is the generic denomination for mixtures of pure gasoline plus 20–25% of anhydrous ethyl alcohol fuel (AEAF).)-fuelled and the other a flexible-fuel vehicle fuelled with hydrated ethanol. The influence of fuel type and quality, aged lubricant oil type and use of fuel additives on the formation of these compounds was tested using standardized tests identical to US FTP-75 cycle. PAH sampling and chemical analysis followed the basic recommendations of method TO-13 (United States. Environmental Protection Agency, 1999. Compendium Method TO-13A – Determination of polycyclic Aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in Ambient Air Using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (CG/MS). Center for environmental research information, Cincinnati, p. 78), with the necessary modification for this particular application. Results showed that the total PAH emission factor varied from 41.9 μg km?1 to 612 μg km?1 in the gasohol vehicle, and from 11.7 μg km?1 to 27.4 μg km?1 in the ethanol-fuelled vehicle, a significant difference in favor of the ethanol vehicle. Generally, emission of light molecular weight PAHs was predominant, while high molecular weights PAHs were not detected. In terms of benzo(a)pyrene toxicity equivalence, emission factors varied from 0.00984 μg TEQ km?1 to 4.61 μg TEQ km?1 for the gasohol vehicle and from 0.0117 μg TEQ km?1 to 0.0218 μg TEQ km?1 in the ethanol vehicle. For the gasohol vehicle, results showed that the use of fuel additive causes a significant increase in the emission of naphthalene and phenanthrene at a confidence level of 90% or higher; the use of rubber solvent on gasohol showed a reduction in the emission of naphthalene and phenanthrene at the same confidence level; the use of synthetic oil instead of mineral oil also contributed significantly to a decrease in the emission of naphthalene and fluorene. In relation to the ethanol vehicle, the same factors were tested and showed no statistically significant influence on PAH emission. 相似文献
