Summary I intensively observed the mating behavior of 134 pairs of white ibises for over 15 000 pair hours to examine the responses of males to extrapair copulations (EPC) involving their mates. Females often cooperated completely in apparently fertile EPCs. Male mate-guarding was vigorous and effective. Males did not respond to apparent sperm competition with forced-pair copulation, physical punishment, or abandonment of their mates. I found no negative correlation between degree of female promiscuity and the amount of parental care her mate gave to the entire brood. Males also did not reduce paternal care given to the young most likely to be the result of an EPC. I hypothesize that males are constrained in the behaviors they can use to avoid misplaced paternity in this species. While male mate-guarding reduces the opportunities for female involvement in EPC, the behaviors used by males to protect paternity apparently have not prevented the evolution of female receptiveness during EPC attempts.  相似文献

The results of model calculations carried out to identify and quantify the input pathways of trace elements into cement and concrete and to estimate the extent to which trace element concentrations in cement may change due to waste utilization are presented. As expected, primary raw materials represented the most important input pathway for trace elements into cement, but the contribution from wastes was not negligible. The use of waste led to a slight increase of the concentrations of cadmium, antimony and zinc in cement. For cobalt, lead and vanadium, this increase was less distinct and for all other trace elements considered, the effect of the use of wastes on trace element concentrations in cement could not be demonstrated clearly. The trace element content of concrete was governed by the aggregates for most elements considered. However, for arsenic, cadmium, lead and zinc, both cement and the additive coal fly ash contributed noticeably to the total trace element concentration in the concrete.  相似文献

Flexible conservation management, where measures (e.g., mowing of meadows, removing invasive species) are selected in each decision period depending on the current state of the ecological system, is generally perceived as superior to fixed management, where the same measure is applied in each decision period independent of the current state of the system. In past comparisons of fixed and flexible conservation strategies the additional costs that arise only in flexible strategies have usually been ignored. In this paper, we present a framework to integrate costs of flexible management into the evaluation of flexible conservation strategies. Using the example of an endangered butterfly species we demonstrate that the costs of flexible management may reverse the rank order of flexible and fixed conservation strategies, such that fixed strategies may lead to better ecological results than flexible ones for the same financial budget.  相似文献
