The atmospheric minor constituents relevant to the ozone layer and their photochemistry are discussed. Mechanisms of a possible anthropogenic depletion of the ozone layer due to supersonic aircraft, nuclear weapons, nitrogen fertilizers, and chlorofluoromethanes, and natural depletion processes due to solar and cosmic effects, are reviewed. In variable environments, organisms are bound to track environmental changes if they are to survive. Most marine mammals and
seabirds are colonial, central-place foragers with long-term breeding-site fidelity. When confronted with environmental change,
such species are potentially constrained in their ability to respond to these changes. For example, if environmental conditions
deteriorate within their limited foraging range, long-lived species favour adult survival and abandon their current breeding
effort, which ultimately influences population dynamics. Should poor conditions persist over several seasons, breeding-site
fidelity may force animals to continue breeding in low-quality habitats instead of emigrating towards more profitable grounds.
We assessed the behavioural response of a site-faithful central-place forager, the Cape gannet Morus capensis, endemic to the Benguela upwelling system, to a rapid shift in the distribution and abundance of its preferred prey, small
pelagic shoaling fish. We studied the distribution and the abundance of prey species, and the diet, foraging distribution,
foraging effort, energy requirements, and breeding success of gannets at Malgas Island (South Africa) over four consecutive
breeding seasons. Facing a rapid depletion of preferred food within their foraging range, Cape gannets initially increased
their foraging effort in search of their natural prey. However, as pelagic fish became progressively scarcer, breeding birds
resorted to scavenging readily available discards from a nearby demersal fishery. Their chicks cannot survive on such a diet,
and during our 4-year study, numbers of breeding birds at the colony decreased by 40% and breeding success of the remaining
birds was very low. Such behavioural inflexibility caused numbers of Cape gannets breeding in Namibia to crash by 95% following
over-fishing of pelagic fish in the 1970s. In the context of rapid environmental changes, breeding-site fidelity of long-lived
species may increase the risk of local or even global extinction, rendering these species particularly vulnerable to global

A behavioral syndrome is a suite of behaviors correlated across multiple social contexts. In this study, boldness in the face
of predation risk was assessed twice in fish across two different sensory modalities in both the field and lab to ascertain
the biological relevance and complexity of this attribute. Individual fathead minnows were captured from a natural field population
using traps that either contained chemical alarm cues (conspecific skin extract) or control (well water) and their responses
to the presence of predator behind a glass partition assessed in the laboratory. Although fewer fish were captured in alarm
cue-labeled traps, these bold fish performed longer predator inspections than shy fish captured in control traps. Thus, a
shy/bold behavioral syndrome was expressed consistently across field and lab settings in response to both chemical and visual
indicators of danger. Shy and bold individuals did not differ in sex, body length, secondary sexual characteristics, or parasite

We consider the problem of designing a surveillance system to detect a broad range of invasive species across a heterogeneous
sampling frame. We present a model to detect a range of invertebrate invasives whilst addressing the challenges of multiple
data sources, stratifying for differential risk, managing labour costs and providing sufficient power of detection. We determine
the number of detection devices required and their allocation across the landscape within limiting resource constraints. The

The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), a system of market support instruments, direct income transfers, and rural development measures, has been put through an ongoing reform process in recent decades. This paper introduces three policy impact assessment tools (SIAT, SEAMLESS-IF, MEA-Scope tool) and analyses how these tools have responded to a number of challenges for integrated assessment modelling as reported in the international literature. Significant progress has been made with regard to modelling linkages whereas other challenges, particularly those related to issues of scale and uncertainty management, require further efforts. It is also analysed which CAP instruments are represented and what kinds of effects can be analysed at different scales. Market instruments and direct payments are comparatively well represented, while the ability to model rural development measures is mostly beyond the scope of these tools. Because each tool has found a different solution for coping with the common challenges of integrated assessment modelling, the choice of one of the tools for a particular application depends strongly on the policy questions being asked. The SIAT provides the big picture via its ability to represent broad changes in policy instruments with EU-wide cross-sector impacts. The most comprehensive analysis of agricultural policy instruments can be obtained with SEAMLESS-IF. The MEA-Scope tool complements the other two approaches with detailed regional profiles. 相似文献

In an effort to increase conservation effectiveness through the use of Earth observation technologies, a group of remote sensing scientists affiliated with government and academic institutions and conservation organizations identified 10 questions in conservation for which the potential to be answered would be greatly increased by use of remotely sensed data and analyses of those data. Our goals were to increase conservation practitioners’ use of remote sensing to support their work, increase collaboration between the conservation science and remote sensing communities, identify and develop new and innovative uses of remote sensing for advancing conservation science, provide guidance to space agencies on how future satellite missions can support conservation science, and generate support from the public and private sector in the use of remote sensing data to address the 10 conservation questions. We identified a broad initial list of questions on the basis of an email chain‐referral survey. We then used a workshop‐based iterative and collaborative approach to whittle the list down to these final questions (which represent 10 major themes in conservation): How can global Earth observation data be used to model species distributions and abundances? How can remote sensing improve the understanding of animal movements? How can remotely sensed ecosystem variables be used to understand, monitor, and predict ecosystem response and resilience to multiple stressors? How can remote sensing be used to monitor the effects of climate on ecosystems? How can near real‐time ecosystem monitoring catalyze threat reduction, governance and regulation compliance, and resource management decisions? How can remote sensing inform configuration of protected area networks at spatial extents relevant to populations of target species and ecosystem services? How can remote sensing‐derived products be used to value and monitor changes in ecosystem services? How can remote sensing be used to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of conservation efforts? How does the expansion and intensification of agriculture and aquaculture alter ecosystems and the services they provide? Bio-economic farm models are tools to evaluate ex-post or to assess ex-ante the impact of policy and technology change on agriculture, economics and environment. Recently, various BEFMs have been developed, often for one purpose or location, but hardly any of these models are re-used later for other purposes or locations. The Farm System Simulator (FSSIM) provides a generic framework enabling the application of BEFMs under various situations and for different purposes (generating supply response functions and detailed regional or farm type assessments). FSSIM is set up as a component-based framework with components representing farmer objectives, risk, calibration, policies, current activities, alternative activities and different types of activities (e.g., annual and perennial cropping and livestock). The generic nature of FSSIM is evaluated using five criteria by examining its applications. FSSIM has been applied for different climate zones and soil types (criterion 1) and to a range of different farm types (criterion 2) with different specializations, intensities and sizes. In most applications FSSIM has been used to assess the effects of policy changes and in two applications to assess the impact of technological innovations (criterion 3). In the various applications, different data sources, level of detail (e.g., criterion 4) and model configurations have been used. FSSIM has been linked to an economic and several biophysical models (criterion 5). The model is available for applications to other conditions and research issues, and it is open to be further tested and to be extended with new components, indicators or linkages to other models. 相似文献

Changes in landownership associated with amenity migration are affecting the demographic, cadastral and ecological conditions of rural landscapes. These changes and concerns about their impacts on natural resource management, including ecological conservation, relate to both the structural consequences of landownership change, land subdivision and to the motivations, management ability and attitudes of lifestyle oriented rural landowners. As part of the Chesapeake Bay restoration effort, state and federal partners have committed to restoring 26,000 miles (41,843 km) of riparian forest buffers. Monitoring trends in riparian forest buffers over large areas is necessary to evaluate the efficacy of these restoration efforts. A sampling approach for estimating change in riparian forest cover from 1993/1994 to 2005 was developed and implemented in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, to exemplify a method that could be applied throughout the Bay watershed. All stream reaches in the county were stratified using forest cover change derived from Landsat imagery. A stratified random sample of 219 reaches was selected and forest cover change within the riparian buffer of each sampled reach was interpreted from high-resolution aerial photography. The estimated footprint of gross change in riparian forest cover (i.e., the sum of gross gain and gross loss) for the county was 1.83% (SE = 0.22%). Stratified sampling taking advantage of a priori knowledge of locations of change proved to be a practical and efficient protocol for estimating riparian forest buffer change at the county scale and the protocol would readily extend to much broader scale monitoring. 相似文献
