Arctic terrain was divided into three layers, moss, detritus and clay, and each layer was contacted with Norman Wells crude oil. Chromatographic analysis of the crude oil extracts of the terrain layers showed that the adsorption capacity of the terrain increased with increasing organic content. The higher molecular weight n-alkanes were adsorbed to a greater extent than lower n-alkanes on the moss and detritus layers. Of the aromatics, p-xylene was adsorbed to a greater extent than benzene on all three layers of the terrain. Retention of crude oil components on Arctic terrain in the event of an oil spill would be in accord with these findings. 相似文献

The effect of aging on the solid/pore-water partitioning and desorption behaviour of tributyltin (TBT) in sediments was examined. Three sediment samples with contrasting physical and chemical properties were spiked with 10 mg/kg TBT and aged under sterile conditions for periods of time ranging from 1 to 84 days. Aging had a negligible effect on partitioning and desorption behaviour in a sandy sample with very low organic carbon content (0.2% w/w). In contrast, for samples with larger amounts of organic carbon (2.6% and 4.8% w/w), aging caused substantial increases in TBT sorption. For these samples, apparent distribution coefficients (KD,app) obtained from sequential 2 h desorption experiments also exhibited a twofold increase between spiked sediments subjected to aging for 1 day and 84 days. Growth of individually marked specimens of Notoacmea scutum (Rathke) was followed for 15 months (April, 1978 to June, 1979) at a field site in central California, USA. Growth rates were highly seasonal, being highest from late spring through early summer and lowest during winter. Growth rate also varied significantly with intertidal height: limpets lower in the intertidal zone grew faster. Both relationships may have been related to the relative abundance of food or to the amount of time available for foraging. Recently settled limpets, which were present throughout the year, grew to approximately 17 mm in length by the end of their first year; by then, they had also reached the size at which mature gonads were consistently found (16 mm). Limpets were almost 26 mm long by the end of the second year. Substantial mortality occurred throughout the year, but it was particularly severe during winter, when a large portion of the reproductive population was lost. This pronounced winter mortality was probably not caused by invertebrate predators such as seastars. Most limpets at the study site were less than 2 yr old. 相似文献

An urgent need for a sub-tropical and tropical indicator organism for use in the biological monitoring of pollutants is recognised. To this end, preliminary studies have been undertaken to test the indicator ability of the rock oyster Saccostrea glomerata (=Crassostrea glomerata Gould) for monitoring the trace metals cadmium, copper, iron and zinc. A survey of these trace metals in rock oysters from 54 sites in Hong Kong waters revealed elevated levels of metals in several areas. Profiles of metal abundance in S. glomerata agreed substantially with the distribution of industrial and domestic discharges in Hong Kong, and also with patterns of contamination found in studies of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and of sediments. Application of POLYDIV statistical analysis to these data has aided their interpretation and confirmed the relationship between known areas of contamination and elevated metal levels in S. glomerata. This oyster, which exhibits an unusually great capacity to accumulate a range of elements from the ambient environment, thus appears to be a reliable indicator organism, and may be of great value in global monitoring studies. 相似文献

When choosing between two potential mates, a male may benefit by picking a larger (longer and/or more heavy-bodied) female because she is likely to produce more or larger offspring. Males of many species use visual cues to evaluate the sizes of their mates, but in some situations (at night or in a crowded mating swarm), vision may be useless. Potentially, males may be able to use chemical cues that convey information about female body size. We manipulated cues available to free-ranging male garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis ) in large courting aggregations near communal dens in Manitoba, Canada. Males not only directed disproportionate courtship to longer and heavier-bodied females, but also courted most vigorously in response to lipids extracted from the skins of such females. Our data show that with a flick of his tongue, a male garter snake can identify not only a female's body length, but also her body condition. 相似文献

Spatial variation in reproductive output from different populations within a region could have important consequences for
recruitment, and cascading effects on populations and communities of marine species, but is rarely examined over meso-scales
(i.e., tens to hundreds of kilometers). In this study, reproduction in the dominant mid-intertidal mussel, Mytilus californianus, was examined from sites spanning Point Conception, California over a 6-month period (March–August 2000). There was a dramatic
geographic pattern in the relationship between size and potential reproductive output that was qualitatively similar across
all 6 months sampled. Increases in allocation to reproductive tissue with increasing body size occurred at all sites, but
the slope nearly doubled at sites south of Point Conception compared to northern sites. The spatial variation in size-specific
reproductive output, coupled with additional spatial gradients in mussel density and size distributions, combined to increase
total reproductive output by over eightfold at southern relative to northern sites. This study highlights the need to explicitly
examine spatial patterns of reproductive output at these meso-scales, in order to better understand connectivity and source–sink

Mussels, Mytilus edulis L., were subjected to high temperatures, low salinities and dissolved zinc in order to investigate possible environmental hazards of a discharge of heated effluent near Newport on the Yarra River estuary, Victoria, Australia. Exposure to zinc at 0.8 mg l-1 for 14 d in otherwise favourable conditions significantly increased mortality resulting from subsequent exposure to temperatures between 29° to 31°C for 24 h without added zinc. Mussels collected from water of temporarily lowered salinity (8–16 S) showed significantly lower thermal resistance than controls collected from marine salinities (35 S). Mussels taken from a marine environment and exposed to 10 S died at a rate which increased with temperature. Mussels acclimated for 14 d to combinations of 10°, 16° and 22°C and 22 and 35 S, and subsequently exposed to increased zinc concentrations accumulated zinc to levels which were independent of temperature and salinity. The zinc was lethal more quickly at 22°C and 35 S than at the lower temperatures and salinities. The modes of toxic action of the salinity, zinc and temperature factors are discussed and it is argued that zinc which has been found accumulated in mussels near Newport could be reducing their resistance to raised temperatures and perhaps other stresses, probably as a result of effects on lysosomal functioning. The evidence suggests that the heated effluent will accelerate any toxic effects of zinc or low salinities which occur near Newport and so poses a hazard in winter as well as in summer. 相似文献

Studies conducted in animal systems have shown that lead is an immunosuppressive agent at levels far below those causing overt toxicity. Children less than six years of age are the population at highest risk for exposure to environmental lead; however little data were available to assess effects on the developing immune system in this age group. Reported here is the completed Phase I study on 193 children, ages 9 months to 6 years, with blood lead levels from 1 to 50 (g dL–1, recruited from the urban population of Springfield-Greene County, Missouri, through their participation in the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) and Lead Poisoning Prevention Programs. This portion of the study dealt with enumeration of cells involved with the immune response andin vitro mitogenic stimulation of lymphocytes. The percent lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, T cells (total), B cells, CD4+T's and CD8+T's and CD4+/CD8+ ratios were determined and the data were analysed. No consistent significant differences were seen among the various risk categories currently identified by the CDC. Though two age groups showed some possible effect of lead, none of the various cellular parameters within these age groups showed significant correlation with blood lead. The lymphocyte response toin vitro mitogenic stimulus was studied on 42 children (including 17 in risk classifications IIA and higher) using the mitogens phytohemagglutinin (PHA), Concanavalin A (Con A), and Pokeweed mitogen (PWM). No consistent statistically significant differences were seen among the various risk categories; the effects of lead, if present, are most likely subtle and obscured by the interindividual and time-dependent variation inherent in this type of study. 相似文献

The distribution and enrichment of selected trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sn, Zn) in benthic sediments of the Southport
Broadwater, a semi-enclosed coastal body of water adjacent to the Gold Coast city, south-eastern Queensland, Australia, was
studied with the objective of assessing the extent and degree of sediment contamination. Sediment samples from the 0–10 cm
and 10–20 cm depth intervals of 32 sites within the Southport Broadwater and surrounding residential canals were analysed
for particle size distribution, pH, organic C and ‘near-total’ major (Al, Ca, Fe, Mn) and trace (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sn, Zn)
metal contents. Sediment contamination for each trace metal was assessed by (1) comparison with Australian sediment quality
guidelines, (2) calculation of the index of geoaccumulation based on regional background values, and (3) geochemical normalisation
against Al (i.e. the abundance of alumino-silicate clay minerals). Based on this approach, the results indicate that submerged
sediments in the study area are not presently enriched with Cd, Cr or Ni, with the spatial distribution of these metals being
very well explained by the abundance of alumino-silicate clay minerals. However, several sites were strongly enriched with
Cu, Pb, Sn and Zn, arising from sources related to either urban runoff or vessel maintenance activities. The study indicates
that several varying approaches are needed for a satisfactory assessment of contaminant enrichment in estuarine sediments. 相似文献
