The chemical composition of Danish household waste was determined by two approaches: a direct method where the chemical composition (61 substances) of 48 material fractions was determined after hand sorting of about 20 tonnes of waste collected from 2200 households; and an indirect method where batches of 80–1200 tonnes of unsorted household waste was incinerated and the content of the waste determined from the content of the outputs from the incinerator. The indirect method is believed to better represent the small but highly contaminated material fractions (e.g., batteries) than the direct method, because of the larger quantities included and the more homogenous material to sample from. Differences between the direct and the direct methods led to corrections in the of heavy metal concentration of a few fractions.The majority of the energy content of the waste originates from organic waste like paper, cardboard and organic fractions. The single fraction contributing most to the total energy content is the non-recyclable plastic fraction, contributing 21% of the energy content and 60% of the chlorine content, although this fraction comprises less than 7% by weight. Heavy metals originate mainly from inert fractions, primarily batteries.  相似文献

Whilst the existence of global climate change is no longer seriously contested and most governments are seeking to adopt appropriate responses, the rate of engagement with these measures is slow. Top-down policies and reliance on market mechanisms are failing to produce the reductions in energy demand and shifts away from fossil fuel reliance that are required. This paper outlines an example of a research programme that seeks to deliver more rapid change. It focuses on the potential for carbon emission reduction in a deprived community in South Yorkshire, UK, and reports on an approach that could be replicated elsewhere. The method includes estimation of baseline energy demand, energy efficiency potential and renewable energy resource assessment as a precursor to action. An innovative community-based energy service company is described and the benefits of a community-based bottom-up approach to carbon reduction are outlined.  相似文献

The aquatic sediments have special significance as habitats of species-rich biocoenoses and as the place where manifold transformation processes occur. Because of their high potential for accumulation of contaminants, sediments are particularly sensitive to anthropogenic impacts, which may disturb the natural state of sediments. In order to protect the aquatic life community, such impacts must be identified, assessed, and the chemical causes of toxic effects must be found. Since the end of the 1980s, the interest for a possibly comprehensive assessment of sediments has increased. This problem can be tackled only by an integrated approach, which combines the detection of toxicity under standardized laboratory conditions with chemical data and biologicalin situ studies into a holistic view. The information value of the results depends essentially on the selection of a diversity of test methods, which are able to indicate contaminant effects differentially. This paper presents results from a comprehensive test approach, which integrates standardized methods (DIN) with pore waters and eluates, as well as tests using the whole sediment. To cover a wider variety of contaminants in the sediment, solvent extracts and fractions thereof were also examined by different bioassays. Chemical analyses examined the structural parameters and identified priority contaminants. Non-target screening could detect a variety of further substances and substance classes. The model organisms of the bioassays responded very differentially and sometimes very intensively to the contaminants in the various investigation media. Especially in sediment extracts, some fractions, and consequently also substances and groups of substances, proved to be particularly toxic. It could be shown that the selected chemical, ecotoxicological, and biological study methods contribute to a holistic assessment. Further, possibly very sensitive bioassays and benthos-biological parameters should be examined aiming to optimize the very wide battery of tests.  相似文献

It has been suggested that industrial waste discharges are associated with the occurrence of fin damage and skin lesions. A mixed population of diseased and healthy blatfish consisting ofLimanda limanda, Pleuronectes platessa, Platichthys flesus andSolea solea were collected from an industrialised area (Calais, France) and were compared with diseased and healthyl. limanda caught in a non-industrialised area (Brixham, England). Analysis of skin samples from necrosed and healthy fish by X-ray microanalysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy has shown that no elemental accumulation occurs either in necrosed fish, or fish from an industrialised area. The fish from Calais were heavily infested with the ectoparasitic copepodLepeophtheirus pectoralis (O.F. Müller) and, although few were found on fish from Brixham, it is unlikely that this infestation was related to the discharge of industrial effluents.  相似文献
