Concentrations of the naturally-ocurring radionuclides 210Po and 210Pb were measured in krill (Euphausia superba), mesozooplankton, phytoplankton and sea water collected during the South African SIBEX cruise to the Antarctic in autumn 1984. The data reported constitute the first substantial measurements on 210Po and 210Pb in such samples in the Antarctic Ocean. The concentrations of 210Po in mesozooplankton and phytoplankton are unexceptional in comparison with those from other oceans. The SIBEX E. superba, however, have higher levels of 210Po than usually found in euphausiids. The 210Po data, combined with reasonable estimates of biological quantitites such as the fractional assimilation, are used to obtain information about the diet of E. superba. It is suggested that the higher 210Po in the SIBEX E. superba reflects a change from an almost entirely phytoplanktonic diet in summer to a more omnivorous diet as winter approaches. The data show that there are allometric relationships between the 210Po content of euphausiids and animal size; these are discussed briefly. The limited sea-water data presented are characterized by unusually high 210Po:210Pb activity ratios and need further investigation. 相似文献

Tolerance to freezing was measured in four species of hydrobiid snails exposed to temperatures from 0° to-8°C and salinities from 0 to 30 S four up to 7 d. Experiments showed the following increasing order of tolerance to freezing: Potamopyrgus jenkinsi (Smith), Hydrobia neglecta Muus, H. ulvae (Pennant) and H. ventrosa (Montagu). Survival decreased with increasing salinity in P. jenkinsi, while the opposite was found in Hydrobia species. H. ulvae survived only slightly better than H. neglecta, while H. ventrosa was very tolerant to freezing even at low salinities in contrast to the other species of Hydrobia. H. neglecta suffered higher winter mortality than H. ventrosa during the severe winter of 1985 in an estuary. 相似文献

Pieces of the reef coral Montipora verrucosa (Lam.), collected from Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii in 1982, were grown in four low-light treatments (11% sunlight): blue, green, red and the full spectrum of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR); and at high-intensity full PAR (90% sunlight). These acclimated corals were then tested for photosynthetic ability in blue, green, red, and white light. The photosynthetic parameters that were measured were; ligh-saturated photosynthetic rate, the initial slope of the photosynthesis/irradiance curve, the light intensity where these two lines crossed, and dark respiration. While acclimation intensity had a pronounced effect, the results also showed that the color of the acclimation treatment influenced the photosynthetic responses of the corals. Summary We studied oviposition, feeding and mating behavior of the water striders Limnoporus dissortis and L. notabilis in sympatric and allopatric populations occurring on semi-permanent ponds in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Here we describe the mating system of the species and consider the evolution and maintenance of reproductive strategies employed by both sexes. Females of both species oviposited along edges of floating vegetation, either with a guarding, postcopulatory male in attendance, or alone and independent of copulation. Some females ovipositing alone were discovered by males, and when pressed for copulation, either (1) abandoned oviposition or (2) copulated and then resumed oviposition. Females that oviposited with a guarding male laid more eggs than those that completed oviposition alone. Most breeding females accepted prey offered experimentally, while a large proportion of males rejected prey but responded to model gerrids with aggressive displays and mating behavior. Males displayed three mating tactics: (1) territorial-signaling (TS), (2) patrol-signaling (PS), and (3) silent patrolling (SP). All territorial males produced surface waves from oviposition sites before attempting to mate. Some patrolling males signaled, while approaching potential mates as an aid in sex discrimination, but others did not signal and mounted both males and females. When presented with dead gerrid models, males of L. notabilis discriminated between sexes while those of L. dissortis mounted both male and female conspecifics. Collectively, males employing TS tactics fertilized more eggs than patrolling males and TS males of L. notabilis fertilized relatively more eggs than those of L. dissortis. Individual males switched frequently between territorial and patrolling behavior both under natural conditions and in field exclosures. TS males gave more signals per encounter than PS males suggesting that signaling varies with male dominance. Choice of tactic did not depend upon hunger level and was not associated with significant differences in body length in single-species populations. This paper describes a flume tank in which the various physical and behavioural conditions encountered by swarming macroplankton can be manipulated, and a mathematical stereophotographic technique, for use in the calculation of the three-dimensional co-ordinates of individual organisms within the swarms. The mathematical model incorporates the Direct-Linear Transformation equation which describes the position of the object and its image in relation to the camera-perspective centre of the photographic system. Combining this equation with a modified light-ray tracement technique to solve for the passage of light through a three-media environment, the actual three-dimensional co-ordinates of the individual organisms and subsequently their inter-individual distances, bearings and angles of elevation may be derived. The distances between adjacent animals can be measured to an accuracy of 0.24 mm (SD=0.21) using this photogrammetric technique. The design of the flume tank allows for the manipulation of water current speed and flow patterns, substrate, and light intensity. Six species of mysid and one species of euphausiid have been induced to swarm in the flume tank. The conditions required to induce swarming and schooling in the laboratory are described. The inter-individual distances, bearings and angles of elevation have been calculated for Paramesopodopsis rufa, Anisomysis mixta australis, Australerythrops paradicei (Crustacea: Mysidacea) and Nyctiphanes australis (Crustacea: Euphausiacea) using the stereophotographic technique. 相似文献

The metabolism of 14C-labelled lactate was investigated in the horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus and the stone crab Menippe mercenaria. When a bolus of (14C-U)-D-lactate was injected into L. polyphemus, there was substantial release pf 14CO2 into the medium. In the case of M. mercenaria, 14CO2 release was also observed after injection of (14C-U)-L-lactate into experimental individuals. Analysis of the distribution of radioactivity in whole body extracts of both species revealed easily detectable amounts of radioactivity in the glycogen fraction, although the bulk of the radioactivity was in the cation, anion/neutral and CO2 fractions. To investigate the metabolism of lactate further, 14C-labelled lactate was injected into large individuals of L. polyphemus and M. mercenaria, and the distribution of radioactivity was determined in the hemolymph, muscle and hepatopancreas. Utilization of (14C-U)-D-lactate by L. polyphemus resulted in the accumulation of significant amounts of labelled glucose in all three body compartments as well as the production of labelled glycogen in the telson levator muscle and hepatopancreas. Utilization of (14C-U)-L-lactate resulted in a similar pattern of glucose and glycogen labelling in the hemolymph, cheliped muscle and hepatopancreas of M. mercenaria. The feeding activity of Eurytemora velox, a brackish copepod from temporary lakes of the south of France, was studied in 1978–1979 using various foods (natural particles, monospecific algal cultures, and artificial food) under different conditions of temperature and salinity. Experiments with Amphidinium sp. or Tetraselmis maculata as food showed that the ingestion rate increased with food concentration according to an asymptotic or a linear relationship. Although of slightly smaller size, T. maculata was ingested at a higher rate than Amphidinium sp. Large maximum daily rations (up to 150% of body carbon with Amphidinium sp. and up to 250% with T. maculata) were attained. These values, which greatly exceed those generally obtained with marine copepods, could result from adaptation of the feeding processes of this copepod to its very rich trophic environment. A significant correlation was demonstrated between ingestion rate and fecal pellet production using T. maculata as food. Therefore, daily fecal production was used as an index of feeding activity in experiments carried out with natural food, T. maculata cultures and artifical food (Tetramin). Increased temperature generally resulted in an activation of grazing and filtration rates and of fecal production at low temperatures (10° to 15°C), but a strong decrease was observed over 22°C. Differences of 10 S over or under the natural salinity level led to a decrease in fecal production, suggesting unachieved acclimatization to salinity variation due to a too short acclimation period before the experiments. Fecal pellet production was higher during the day than during the night. It depended also on the quality of food used: high values were obtained with T. maculata, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Rhodomonas sp. and Chlamydomonas sp., low values with Chlorella sp. and Amphidinium sp., and medium values with natural food material. The assimilation rate (A) was calculated by Conover's methods. A significant negative correlation was obtained between A and the ash content of the food. High assimilation rates were attained with chlorophycean algae, while natural particulate food produced variable assimilation rates, depending on the amount of inorganic material present.

Summary The ability of cave dwelling swiftlets (Collocalia spodiopygius) to detect small cylindrical obstacles by echolocation was tested in a 3x9 m flight chamber. Although there was great individual variability, 6.3 mm obstacles were avoided much more often in total darkness than 1.5 wires (P<0.001). Flash photographs showed that the latter were avoided only by chance (about 50% misses). Obstacles 3.0 mm in diameter were avoided only slightly more often than 1.5 mm wires.Even in the light these swiftlets avoided the obstacles in only about 75% of the trials, probably because gentle touches with the primary feathers caused little discomfort.The 3.0 and 6.3 mm obstacles tended to be avoided more often on first encounters after they had been shifted horizontally by 10–30 cm, probably because the birds became more attentive. 相似文献

Benthic response to sedimentation of a spring phytoplankton bloom: Process and budget 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The response of benthos to sedimentation of the spring phytoplankton bloom in the Kiel Bight (Western Baltic Sea) is described in terms of biomass (ATP) and activity (heat production and ETS-activity). Input of the bloom (11.5 g C m-2) over a period from March 25 to April 19, 1980 to the sediment surface was in the form of cells and fresh phytodetritus as indicated by low C/N ratios (7) and high energy charge values (0.78). Benthic microbial activity was immediately stimulated by this input as heat production doubled and the activity of ETS tripled over winter values within 12 d in the absence of a significant increase in ambient temperature. A comparison of the two activity parameters suggests that anaerobic metabolism is more important during the winter (February and March) than after input of the bloom. Meiofauna was not able to take part in the first activity outburst. Benthic ATP-biomass (excluding macrofauna) doubled in late April due to microbial production, and doubled again in early May when meiofauna started reproductive activity. For macrofauna a general statement was not possible, although the sediment surface feeder Macoma baltica commenced a build up of glycogen and lipid resources immediately following bloom input whereas Nephtys ciliata, feeding on sediment and small macrofauna, showed a less pronounced and delayed effect from this input. An energy budget based on heat production measurements was calculated. A daily heat loss of the benthic community of 21.7 KJ m-2 d-1 (35.5 KJ m-2 d-1) was found, when a depth of 3 cm sediment (5 cm) was assumed. Heat production of macrofauna contributed less than 5% of this activity. The input of the bloom was burned within 21 (13) d. Preliminary estimations for an annual budget suggest that the vertical transport of particulate organic matter via sedimentation can only explain 25% (15%) of the benthic activity in the shallow water ecosystem of the Kiel Bight.
