The geochemical characteristics of coal cleaning rejects (CCR) in Santa Catarina State, Brazil, were investigated. Around 3.5 million ton/ year of coal waste are dumped in Santa Catarina State. Coal beneficiation by froth flotation results in large amounts of CCR composed of coaly and mineral matter, the latter characterised by the occurrence of sulphide minerals and a broad array of leachable elements. The total and leachable contents of more than 60 elements were analysed. Atmospheric exposure promotes sulphide oxidation that releases substantial sulphate loads as well as Ca2?+?, K?+?, Mg2?+?, Cl??? and Al3?+?. The metals with the most severe discharges were Zn, Cu, Mn, Co, Ni and Cd. Most trace pollutants in the CCR displayed a marked pH-dependent solubility, being immobile in near-neutral samples. The results highlight the complex interactions among mineral matter solubility, pH and the leaching of potentially hazardous elements.  相似文献

We analyzed bulk UV absorbance of methanolic extracts and levels of five UV-absorbing compounds (hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives) in 135 herbarium samples of the liverwort Jungermannia exsertifolia subsp. cordifolia from northern Europe. Samples had been collected in 1850–2006 (96% in June–August). Both UV absorbance and compound levels were correlated positively with collection year. p-Coumaroylmalic acid (C1) was the only compound showing a significant (and negative) correlation with stratospheric ozone and UV irradiance in the period that real data of these variables existed. Stratospheric ozone reconstruction (1850–2006) based on C1 showed higher values in June than in July and August, which coincides with the normal monthly variation of ozone. Combining all the data, there was no long-term temporal trend from 1850 to 2006. Reconstructed UV showed higher values in June–July than in August, but again no temporal trend was detected in 1918–2006 using the joint data. This agrees with previous UV reconstructions.  相似文献

Carotenoids are organic pigments involved in several important physiological functions and may serve as indicators of individual quality in animals. These pigments are only obtained by animals from the diet, but they can be later transformed into other carotenoids by specific enzymatic reactions. The diet of farm-reared and probably wild red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) is mainly based on cereals that contain high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin. These two carotenoids are also predominant in internal tissues and blood of red-legged partridges. However, in their integuments, astaxanthin and papilioerythrinone (the last one identified in this work) are mainly present in their free form and esterified with fatty acids. According to available literature about carotenoid metabolism in animals, we propose that astaxanthin (λ max?=?478 nm) and papilioerythrinone (λ max?=?452–478 nm) are the result of a chromatic convergence of the transformation of dietary zeaxanthin and lutein, respectively. Moreover, the results obtained in this work provide the first identification by liquid chromatography coupled to accurate mass quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer system of papilioerythrinone (m/z 581.3989 [M?+?H]+) in the skin (i.e., not feathers) of a vertebrate. Astaxanthin and papilioerythrinone are very close in terms of chemical structure and coloration, and the combination of these two keto-carotenoids is responsible for the red color of the ornaments in red-legged partridges.  相似文献

The main objective of this work is to evaluate the suitability of rice straw and soda–anthraquinone (soda–AQ) pulping process to produce pulp and paper. To reach this aim, it was used a central composite factorial design to study the influence of operational variables (temperature (155–185 °C), cooking time (30–90 min), soda concentration (10–20%), anthraquinone concentration (0–1%) and liquid/solid ratio (6–8)), in soda–anthraquinone cooking of rice straw on pulps and paper sheets properties obtained.Based on the yield values obtained, nearly one half of the raw material can be efficiently converted into cellulose pulp and paper sheets. Also, the Kappa number/viscosity ratio of the pulp facilitates its efficient bleaching. Finally, based on the values for above-described physical properties, the pulp can be used to obtain paper or board and recycled paper (as % virgin fibre).In Spain are produced annually 757,000 t of rice straw. If we considered an average yield process of 45%, it would be possible to obtain 340,000 tons of pulp. These tons would be absorbed by the market taking into account the necessities in cellulosic pulp consumption.  相似文献

The "Cincinnati Childhood Allergy and Air Pollution Study (CCAAPS)" is underway to determine if infants who are exposed to diesel engine exhaust particles are at an increased risk for atopy and atopic respiratory disorders, and to determine if this effect is magnified in a genetically at risk population. In support of this study, a methodology has been developed to allocate local traffic source contributions to ambient PM(2.5) in the Cincinnati airshed. As a first step towards this allocation, UNMIX was used to generate factors for ambient PM(2.5) at two sites near at interstate highway. Procedures adopted to collect, analyze and prepare the data sets to run UNMIX are described. The factors attributed to traffic sources were similar for the two sites. These factors were also similar to locally measured truck engine-exhaust enriched ambient profiles. The temporal variation of the factors was analyzed with clear differences observed between factors attributed to traffic sources and combustion-related regional secondary sources.  相似文献

The morphology of ambient particulate matter (PM) is an important characteristic that seldom is measured and reported. A study was performed to determine the viability of a method to establish the distribution of shapes and the fractal dimensions of aggregates of ambient aerosols. Particles of PM with aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 microm (PM2.5) were captured on different days via size-independent electrostatic precipitation at two sites in St. Louis and examined in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Nonvolatile particles between 0.1 and 2.5 microm were readily identified via SEM. Particle shapes were classified as fibrous, spherical, agglomerated, or "other." A computer program using the nested-squares algorithm was developed and used to determine the fractal dimensions of the aggregates. More particles were collected at the St. Louis-Midwest Supersite on June 14, 2002, than were collected on the Washington University campus loading dock on May 31, 2002, but the campus samples had a higher percentage of aggregates. On one day of sampling at the Supersite, the aggregate fraction was highest in the morning (14.3% between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m.) and steadily declined during the day (1.3% between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.). The fractal dimensions of the aerosols were 1.65 in the morning (7:00-9:00 a.m.), decreased to 1.49 (11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.), and then increased to 1.87 (5:00-7:00 p.m.). The results show that the fractal dimension is not a static value and that ambient aerosols are not perfectly spherical.  相似文献

The evolution of semivolatile and volatile compounds in the combustion of polyethylene (PE) was studied at different operating conditions in a horizontal quartz reactor. Four combustion runs at 500 and 850 degrees C with two different sample mass/air flow ratios and two pyrolytic runs at the same temperatures were carried out. Thermal behavior of different compounds was analyzed and the data obtained were compared with those of literature. It was observed that alpha,omega-olefins, alpha-olefins and n-paraffins were formed from the pyrolytic decomposition at low temperatures. On the other hand, oxygenated compounds such as aldehydes were also formed in the presence of oxygen. High yields were obtained of carbon oxides and light hydrocarbons, too. At high temperatures, the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) took place. These compounds are harmful and their presence in the combustion processes is related with the evolution of pyrolytic puffs inside the combustion chamber with a poor mixture of semivolatile compounds evolved with oxygen. Altogether, the yields of more than 200 compounds were determined. The collection of the semivolatile compounds was carried out with XAD-2 adsorbent and were analyzed by GC-MS, whereas volatile compounds and gases were collected in a Tedlar bag and analyzed by GC with thermal conductivity and flame ionization detectors.  相似文献

Safe animal by-product disposal is a priority target as a result of the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy crisis in the European beef industry. One such disposal option is the incineration of by-product material such as meat and bone meal residues (MBM) for the purpose of energy recovery. Although currently applied, the thermal decomposition of MBM wastes has not been scientifically studied until now. A series of experiments has been performed to study the thermal behavior of MBM both in inert (N2) and reactive atmosphere (air), both by thermogravimetry and in a horizontal laboratory furnace. As a general trend, MBM gives low PCDD/F values, compared with incineration of other wastes. Maximum yield of pollutants is observed at a nominal temperature between 700 and 800 degrees C.  相似文献
