This article analyses, using Bayesian networks, the circumstances surrounding workplace tasks performed using auxiliary equipment (ladders, scaffolding, etc.) that may result in falls. The information source was a survey of employees working at a height. We were able to determine the usefulness of this approach – innovative in the accident research field – in identifying the causes that have the greatest bearing on accidents involving auxiliary equipment: in these cases, the adoption of incorrect postures during work and a worker’s inadequate knowledge of safety regulations. Likewise, the duration of tasks was also associated with both these variables, and therefore, with the accident rate. Bayesian networks also enable dependency relationships to be established between the different causes of accidents. This information – which is not usually furnished by conventional statistical methods applied in the field of labour risk prevention – allow a causality model to be defined for workplace accidents in a more realistic way. The objective is to describe and quantify the diel variability of water quality in a tropical coastal system, Guanabara Bay, Brazil. Water samples were collected in spring and neap tide cycles over 24 h periods at three strategic sites. A pollution gradient was evident between the sampling sites. The average fecal coliform values decreased from 106 (site 3, most polluted) to 101 (site 1, less polluted). Organic matter mineralization was found in a similar gradient to organic pollution. However, complete nitrification was only found associated to regions where the water quality was better. Variability in this data set was determined mostly by the pollution gradient observed, and by tidal influence as well. The poor water quality indicates that the bay undergoes severe environmental stress. However water renewal promoted by tidal action was an important mechanism in diluting the pollution, improving water quality even in ebb tides and in the inner channels. The significance of micro-scale changes in water quality assessment in Guanabara Bay was confirmed, as well as the importance of these strategic sampling sites, reinforcing the importance of these measurements in monitoring programs. 相似文献
Noise conditions specifically in areas inside university facilities and its impact on the quality of life of university students are topics that have received little attention. This paper presents a study of the noise conditions in which university students of various institutions in Madrid, Spain, carry out their daily studies. A representative number of measurements was carried out using noise dosemeters and dataloggers in order to evaluate the levels of noise, noise dose and exposure to noise during school periods and extracurricular activities. The results were compared with the recommendations given by current environmental noise regulations. To restore food security to a traditional African cropping system following a sudden loss of seed, genetic diversity must be re-established. This study examines the extent to which Cowpea diversity was reinstated two years after a flood disaster in Gaza Province, Mozambique. The contribution that seed from various sources made to the recovery was assessed using semi-structured interviews and morphological and molecular data. Data suggest that diversity had recovered to some extent yet there was evidence of a narrowing of the genetic base, with fewer rare alleles and differences in the distribution of allele frequencies. Although the main channels for accessing seed after the flood were seed relief and markets, these sources contributed to minimal and different diversity. It appears that diversity was regained primarily through social networking in the form of loans or gifts of seed from friends and relatives. The results of the study are discussed in relation to seed relief approaches. 相似文献

Sea cucumbers are conspicuous organisms inhabiting almost all marine habitats across the globe. Despite their importance as effective consumers of detritus, little is known about their behavior. We studied organic matter (OM) consumption and nocturnal movement patterns of Holothuria sanctori through indoors assays and in situ experiments at shallow bottoms off Gran Canaria Island (Canary Islands, Spain). H. sanctori has a selective feeding toward high OM concentration sediments. Consumption of OM increased with OM availability, particularly during formation of the gonads. OM consumption did not differ in situ between two adjacent habitats arranged in mosaics: macroalgal beds and urchin-grazed “barrens.” Larger distances and fastest displacements were covered by H. sanctori during the end than the middle and start of the nighttime. Overall, we did not detect a clear “homing” behavior by H. sanctori, yet some individuals showed a fidelity for refuges when shelter availability was lacking. 相似文献
There is a large literature dealing with daily foraging routines of wild birds during the non-breeding season. While different
laboratory studies have showed that some bird activity patterns are a persistent property of the circadian system, most of
field studies preclude the potential role of an endogenous circadian rhythm in controlling bird’s foraging routines. In this
study we compared the patterns of diurnal foraging activity and intake rates of migrating black-tailed godwits, Limosa limosa (radio-tagged and non-tagged individuals) at two stopover sites (habitats) with different environmental characteristics,
aiming at identifying proximate factors of bird activity routines. To gain insights into the role of food availability in
control of such foraging routines, we also estimated foraging activity patterns in captive godwits subjected to constant food
availability. Captive and wild black-tailed godwits showed a persistent bimodal activity pattern through daylight period.
Food availability had a significant effect on the intake rates, but had a subtler effect on foraging and intake rate rhythms.
Temperature and wind speed (combined in a weather index) showed non-significant effects on both rhythms. Although we could
not discard a role for natural diurnal changes in light intensity, an important timing cue, our findings support the idea
that an endogenous circadian rhythm could be an important proximate factor regulating foraging activity and food items taken
per unit time of wild black-tailed godwits during migration. 相似文献
Species vary in abundance and heterogeneity of spatial distribution, and the ecological and evolutionary consequences of such variability are poorly known. Evolutionary adaptation to heterogeneously distributed resources may arise from local adaptation with individuals of such locally adapted populations rarely dispersing long distances and hence having small populations and small overall ranges. We quantified mean population density and spatial heterogeneity in population density of 197 bird species across 12 similarly sized regions in the Western Palearctic. Variance in population density among regions differed significantly from a Poisson distribution, suggesting that random processes cannot explain the observed patterns. National estimates of means and variances in population density were positively correlated with continental estimates, suggesting that means and variances were maintained across spatial scales. We used Morisita's index of population abundance as an estimate of heterogeneity in distribution among regions to test a number of predictions. Heterogeneously distributed passerine bird species as reflected by Morisita's index had small populations, low population densities, and small breeding ranges. Their breeding populations had been consistently maintained at low levels for considerable periods of time, because the degree of genetic variation in a subsample of non-passerines and passerines was significantly negatively related to heterogeneity in distribution. Heterogeneously distributed passerine species were not more often habitat specialists than homogeneously distributed species. Furthermore, heterogeneously distributed passerine species had high annual adult survival rates but did not differ in annual fecundity from homogeneously distributed species. Heterogeneously distributed passerine species rarely colonized urban habitats. Finally, homogeneously distributed bird species were hosts to a greater diversity of blood parasite species than heterogeneously distributed species. In conclusion, small breeding ranges, population sizes, and population densities of heterogeneously distributed passerine bird species, combined with their low degree of genetic variability, and their inability to colonize urban areas may render such species particularly susceptible to human-influenced global climatic changes. 相似文献
Traditionally it has been assumed by ecologists that the dispersion of positions with respect to leks of female capercaillies
during the mating season is superior to the dispersion of positions of male capercaillies. However some recently published
articles suggest the idea that dispersion is not sex-biased, but both sexes show a similar dispersion. This article introduces
a mathematical model to approach the study of the above question by means of an indexed dispersion criterion. This model is
developed in detail thus deriving its main mathematical properties. On this basis, the model is applied to the analysis of
the motivating problem with real data of positions of leks and female and male capercaillies. The results derived by means
of the model put into doubt the traditional assumption of a superior dispersion of females supporting the new theories, that

The economic viability of the split-phase glycolysis process for the recycling of any kind of flexible polyurethane foam waste employing crude glycerol as cleavage agent has been demonstrated. First, experiments at pilot plant scale were carried out to check that the process can be extrapolated to larger scales. With the goal of scaling-up the process from laboratory scale to pilot plant, geometric similarity criteria were applied together with dynamic similarity for laminar flow in agitated tank reactors. Hence, a pilot plant installation was designed with geometrically similar equipment to those used for lab scale, obtaining analogous results in terms of recovered polyol properties. Then, the basic design of a split-phase glycolysis industrial plant with a capacity for treating 270 Tm per year of flexible PU foams scraps was proposed. Finally, the economic feasibility of such recycling process was confirmed because of the obtention of a Net Present Value (NPV) of 1,464,555€, with an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 27.99%, and a payback time between 4 and 5 years.
