Dry deposition flux of major ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NH4+, F-, Cl-, NO3- and SO4(2-) to natural surfaces [guava (Psidium guyava) and peepal (Ficus religiosa) leaves] are determined at Rampur, a rural site of semi-arid region of India. Dry deposition flux is the highest for Ca2+ on guava leaves and for NH4+ on peepal leaves. Overall dry deposition flux is higher on guava leaves than of peepal leaves. The variation in deposition flux may be due to surface characteristics (surface roughness) and arrangement of leaves. Peepal leaves are arranged along the axis of the stem, whereas guava leaves are at right angles to the stem. The deposition flux of cations contributes 66% and 76% of dry deposition of all major ions on guava and peepal leaves, respectively as soil is major contributor towards dry deposition flux in tropical regions. ANOVA revealed no significant seasonal difference in deposition, although there is a trend for higher in winter. Deposition velocities of NH4+, NO3- and SO4(2-) are greater on guava leaves than peepal leaves, which can be attributed to the rougher surface of the guava leaf. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the benefits and costs of policies to reduce NOx emissions from electricity generation in the United States. Because emissions of NOx contribute to the high concentration of atmospheric ozone in the eastern states associated with health hazards, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has called on eastern states to formulate state implementation plans (SIPs) for reducing NOx emissions. Our analysis considers three NOx reduction scenarios: a summer seasonal cap in the eastern states covered by EPA's NOx SIP Call, an annual cap in the same SIP Call region, and a national annual cap. All scenarios allow for emissions trading. Although EPA's current policy is to implement a seasonal cap in the SIP Call region, this analysis indicates that an annual cap in the SIP Call region would yield about $400 million more in net benefits (benefits less costs) than would a seasonal policy, based on particulate-related health effects only. An annual cap in the SIP Call region is also the policy that is most likely to achieve benefits in excess of costs. Consideration of omissions from this accounting, including the potential benefits from reductions in ozone concentrations, strengthens the finding that an annual program offers greater net benefits than does a seasonal program. 相似文献

Mercury (Hg) is a potent nephrotoxin. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective role of Curcuma longa extract and curcumin against HgCl2-induced nephrotoxicity. Male Sprague Dawley rats were administered HgCl2 (12 μmol kg?1, ip; once only) followed by treatment of Curcuma longa extract (200 mg kg?1, po) and curcumin (80 mg kg?1, po) for three days after 24 h of HgCl2 administration. The present results showed that mercuric chloride administration caused an impairment of renal function system which was evident from significant increase in urea, creatinine, uric acid, and blood urea nitrogen concentration in serum. In addition, the swelling in glomerulus and degenerated renal tubules with obstructed lumen was also observed by acute mercuric chloride administration. Treatment with Curcuma longa extract and curcumin was effective in restoring all variables of kidney functions near to control group, which was consistent with kidney histoarchitecture. In conclusion, these results suggest that Curcuma longa extract and curcumin protect against HgCl2-induced nephrotoxicity. This study could be important for the further understanding of mercury toxicity in renal tissues and in the development of better treatments for people and/or animals exposed to the metal. 相似文献

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) used extensively over the past 3 decades as flame retardants in most types of polymers, all over the world, have been identified as global pollutants. PBDEs pose various health problems such as thyroid hormone disruption, permanent learning and memory impairment, behavioral changes, hearing deficits, delayed puberty onset, fetal malformations, and possibly cancer. Many measurements of PBDEs in various matrices from Sweden, Holland, Japan, the USA, and elsewhere have been reported, but few measurements are available for India. In this study, a preliminary screening of different congeners of PBDEs has been performed in different old electronic and consumer products with an objective to build capacity in order to analyze PBDEs and BFRs. Six different samples, foam from upholstery, motherboard of a computer, children toy composite sample, old vanishing window blind sample, electrical wire sample, and PVC flooring sample, were collected and analyzed for the presence of the following PBDE congeners: BDE-28, BDE-47, BDE-99, BDE-100, BDE-153, BDE-154, BDE-183, and BDE-209. It was found that three out of six samples were positive for the presence of PBDEs. Three congeners were detected in the samples, i.e., BDE-47, BDE-153, and BDE-209, of which, highest concentration was of BDE-209. Among the samples, motherboard of computer showed the highest concentration of BDE-209 followed by window blind and foam from upholstery. The results of this preliminary investigation indicate that PBDEs are still present in the old consumer products which can be an important additional source of exposure to the population. 相似文献
