Androgen hormones of maternal origin contained in the eggs of avian species are considered to have positive effects on offspring
characteristics and performance. However, negative consequences have also been reported, suggesting that mothers may experience
a trade-off between beneficial and detrimental effects of egg androgens to offspring fitness. We studied the effects of elevated
yolk testosterone (T) concentration on survival, development and phenotype of male and female yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) chicks by injecting egg yolks with physiological doses of the hormone. Elevated yolk T resulted in a male-biased post-hatching
sex ratio, T-treated clutches producing a greater proportion of males compared to control ones at day 4 post-hatching, likely
resulting from a reduction of female embryonic survival, whereas no effect of hormone treatment on hatching success or short-term
chick survival was observed. In addition, T depressed post-hatching body mass in both sexes but had no effects on the intensity
of the cell-mediated immune response or skeletal growth. No sex differences in egg characteristics or chick phenotype were
detected. Time to hatching was not affected by T, but females originating from first laid eggs hatched earlier than males
of the same laying order, independently of hormone treatment. However, the implications of sex differences in hatching times
are unclear in the study species. Taken together, our results suggest that female yellow-legged gulls may be constrained in
transferring androgens to their eggs by negative consequences on the viability of female offspring and growth of chicks of

Parrotfishes are important components of the herbivore and detritivore guilds of tropical and subtropical reefs. Most of parrotfish species are protogynous hermaphrodites that change colour and sex, from initial phase females or males (IP) to terminal phase males (TP). We studied the foraging behaviour of Sparisoma amplum, S. axillare and S. frondosum, three syntopic scarids on the rocky reefs of Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Tropical West Atlantic. The three parrotfish species differed in food selection and preference, but IP and TP individuals of the same species preferred the same food types, except for S. amplum. Feeding rates of IP individuals were higher than those of TP individuals, but the distribution of feeding frequencies throughout the day of IP and TP individuals of the same species was similar. IP individuals had higher feeding rates than TP ones, which seems related to the fact that TP individuals spend a large amount of time patrolling their territories and chasing away conspecific individuals at the study site. The general foraging pattern we found for S. amplum, S. axillare and S. frondosum is similar to patterns found for other parrotfish species in the Western Atlantic. 相似文献

We developed and tested a methodology to extract both the size-segregated source apportionment of atmospheric aerosol and the size distribution of each detected element. The experiment is based on the parallel use of a standard low-volume sampler to collect Particulate Matter (PM) and an Optical Particle Counter (OPC). The approach is complementary to size-segregated PM sampling, and it was tested versus a 12-stage cascade impactor. Samples were collected inside the urban area of Genoa (Italy) and their elemental composition was measured by Energy Dispersive-X Ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF). Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was applied to time series of elemental concentrations to identify major PM sources, and both PM mass concentration and size-segregated particle number concentration were apportioned. Source profiles and temporal trends extracted by PMF were analyzed together with the OPC data to obtain the size distribution for several elements. The new methodology proved to be reliable for the PM apportionment as well as in providing the elemental concentrations in PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 (PM with aerodynamic diameter, Dae < 10, 2.5, and 1 μm, respectively). The elemental size distributions are in good agreement with those obtained by the cascade impactor for several elements but some discrepancies, in particular for traffic emissions, are stressed and discussed in the text. The new methodology has two main advantages: it only requires standard semi-automatic sampling equipment and compositional analysis and it provides size-segregated information averaged over quite long periods (typically several months). With the main purpose of evaluating PCDD/F presence and the corresponding mass balance over the emissions control system, an extensive study was performed on a municipal solid waste full scale incinerator equipped with a best available technology flue gas treatment line. Present paper reports the main results obtained, with particular reference to the PCDD/F concentration profiles and mass balances derived for every process unit of the flue gas control system. Rural communities in Australia are confronting a period of unprecedented change. They face declining commodity prices, the withdrawal of both public and private sector services, such as banks and hospitals, and the closure of small businesses. Their populations are in decline, with young people leaving for the larger regional centres. Many also face a declining resource base as soils become saline and water resources are sold to areas with higher unit returns. This paper presents a framework for sustainable community development based on emerging ideas of performance auditing and the development of progress indicators. The triple bottom line community audit approach is recast for the community level, measuring performance on improved community wellbeing, reduced environmental impact and increased economic vitality. Rural communities need to redefine their future. A sustainability focus offers a way forward. Las comunidades rurales en Australia estan afrontando un periodo de cambio sin precedente. Enfrentan disminución en los precios de los productos, retiro de servicios de ambos sectores, publico y privado, como bancos y hospitales y el cierre de pequeños negocios. Under an IAEA's Co-ordinated Research Project "Worldwide Marine Radioactivity Studies (WOMARS)" 90Sr, 137Cs and (239,240)Pu concentration surface water time series in the Pacific and Indian Oceans have been investigated. The Pacific and Indian Oceans were divided into 17 latitudinal boxes according to ocean circulation, global fallout patterns and the location of nuclear weapons test sites. The present levels and time trends in radionuclide concentrations in surface water for each box were studied and the corresponding effective half-lives were estimated. For the year 2000, the estimated average 90Sr, 137Cs and (239,240)Pu concentrations in surface waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans varied from 0.1 to 1.5 mBq/L, 0.1 to 2.8 mBq/L, and 0.1 to 5.2 microBq/L, respectively. The mean effective half-lives for 90Sr and 137Cs in surface water were 12+/-1 years for the North, 20+/-1 years for the South and 21+/-2 years for the Equatorial Pacific. For (239,240)Pu the corresponding mean effective half-lives were 7+/-1 years for the North, 12+/-4 years for the South and 10+/-2 years for the Equatorial Pacific. For the Indian Ocean the mean effective half-lives of 137Cs and (239,240)Pu were 21+/-2 years and 9+/-1 years, respectively. There is evidence that fallout removal rates before 1970 were faster than those observed during recent decades. The estimated surface water concentrations of 90Sr, 137Cs and (239,240)Pu in latitudinal belts of the Pacific and Indian Oceans for the year 2000 may be used as the average levels so that any new contribution from nuclear facilities, nuclear weapons test sites, radioactive waste dumping sites and from possible nuclear accidents can be identified. 相似文献

The effect of arbuscular mycorrhiza on heavy metal uptake and translocation was investigated in Cannabis sativa. Hemp was grown in the presence and absence of 100 microg g-1 Cd and Ni and 300 microg g-1 Cr(VI), and inoculated or not with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus mosseae. In our experimental condition, hemp growth was reduced in inoculated plants and the reduction was related to the degree of mycorrhization. The percentage of mycorrhizal colonisation was 42% and 9% in plants grown in non-contaminated and contaminated soil, suggesting a significant negative effect of high metal concentrations on plant infection by G. mosseae. Soil pH, metal bioavailability and plant metal uptake were not influenced by mycorrhization. The organ metal concentrations were not statistically different between inoculated and non-inoculated plants, apart from Ni which concentration was significantly higher in stem and leaf of inoculated plants grown in contaminated soil. The distribution of absorbed metals inside plant was related to the soil heavy metal concentrations: in plant grown in non-contaminated soil the greater part of absorbed Cr and Ni was found in shoots and no significant difference was determined between inoculated and non-inoculated plants. On the contrary, plants grown in artificially contaminated soil accumulated most metal in root organ. In this soil, mycorrhization significantly enhanced the translocation of all the three metals from root to shoot. The possibility to increase metal accumulation in shoot is very interesting for phytoextraction purpose, since most high producing biomass plants, such as non-mycorrhized hemp, retain most heavy metals in roots, limiting their application. 相似文献

The modification of MCM-41 was performed with 3-aminopropropyltrimethoxysilane. The structural order and textural properties of the synthesized materials were studied by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry/differential thermogravimetry, nitrogen adsorption, and desorption analysis. The adsorption capacity of NH2-MCM-41 was studied with Remazol Red dye. The following parameters were studied in the adsorption process: pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration. The desorption process was studied in different concentrations of NaOH solutions. The Freundlich isotherm model was found to be fit with the equilibrium isotherm data. Kinetics of adsorption follows the modified Avrami rate equation. The maximum adsorption capacity was estimated to be 45.9 mg?g?1, with removal of the dye of 99.1 %. The NH2-MCM-41 material exhibited high desorption capacity with 98.1 %. 相似文献
