Chlorinated pesticides can contain impurities of dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and their precursors, as a result of various manufacturing processes and conditions. As precursor formation of PCDD/Fs can also be mediated by ultraviolet light (UV), this study investigated whether PCDD/Fs are formed when currently used pesticides are exposed to natural sunlight. Formulations containing pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB; n = 2) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D; n = 1) were exposed to sunlight in quartz tubes, and the concentration of 93 PCDD/F congeners were monitored over time. Considerable formation of PCDD/Fs was observed in both PCNB formulations (by up to 5600%, to a maximum concentration of 57 000 μg ∑PCDD/F kg−1) as well as the 2,4-D formulation (by 3000%, to 140 μg ∑PCDD/F kg−1). TEQ also increased by up to 980%, to a maximum concentration of 28 μg kg−1 in PCNB, but did not change in the 2,4-D formulation. Assuming similar yields as observed in the present study as a worst case scenario the use of PCNB in Australia may result in the formation of 155 g TEQ annum−1, contributed primarily by OCDD formation. This warrants detailed evaluations on the contemporary release of PCDD/Fs to the environment after the use of pesticides. Changes in congener profiles (including the ratio of PCDDs to PCDFs (DF ratio)) suggest that pesticide sources of PCDD/Fs after sunlight exposure may not be recognized based on matching source fingerprints established from manufacturing impurities. These changes also provide preliminary insights into the possible formation routes and types of precursors involved.  相似文献

This study characterized some of the physical and chemical features of large outside field grease abatement devices (GADs). 24-hour measurements of several food service establishments' (FSEs') influent GAD flowrates indicated highly intermittent conditions with hydraulic retention times (HRTs) that exceeded the common recommendation (30 minutes) by two to five times. Investigation into the chemical characteristics of GADs indicated highly variable influent and effluent fat, oil, and grease (FOG) concentrations. Low pH and dissolved oxygen values were measured throughout the GAD, indicating the likely occurrence of anaerobic microbial processes. Detailed spatial and temporal observations of the accumulation of FOG and food solids were also discussed. Though the FOG layer remained relatively constant for all GAD configurations investigated, results indicated that commonly-used GAD configurations with a straight submerged inlet tee or no-inlet tee configuration may result in the transport of food solids into the second compartment. The present research showed increased accumulation of food solids in the first compartment with a retro-fit flow distributive inlet. This retro-fit displays promise for potentially improving the separation characteristics of existing GADs.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This research investigated and compared the use of both bench- and pilot-scale biofilters to determine the effectiveness of controlling styrene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and acetone emissions from an industrial gas waste stream. Critical operating parameters, including contaminant loading rate, temperature, and empty bed contact time, were manipulated in both the laboratory and field. At steady-state conditions, the bench and pilot-scale biofilters showed a 99% removal efficiency for styrene when the contaminant loading rate was less than 50 g m-3hr-1 and 40 g m-3hr-1, respectively. Although few data points were collected in the pilot-scale reactor where the styrene load was greater than 40 g m-3hr-1, the total organic contaminant load including both MEK and acetone typically ranged between 50 g m-3hr-1 and 80 g m-3hr-1. Greater than 99% removal efficiencies were observed for acetone and MEK in the pilot-scale biofilter at all evaluated loading rates. Also studied were biofilter acclimation and re-acclimation periods. In inoculated bench and pilot biofilter systems, microbial acclimation to styrene was achieved in less than five days. In comparison, no MEK degrading microbial inoculum was added, so during the first months of pilot-scale biofilter operation, MEK removal efficiencies lagged behind those noted with styrene.  相似文献

The Mangrove Finch (Cactospiza heliobates) is unique among Darwin's finches in its specialized habits and naturally fragmented distribution on individual islands. It has been reported to occupy six patches of mangroves separated to varying degrees on two of the Galápagos islands, Isabela and Fernandina. We present the results of a field study in three of the patches. The species appears to have become extinct on Fernandina and to be restricted now to a maximum of four habitat islands on Isabela. In one of them, Playa Tortuga Negra, we estimate the population of breeding adults to be 10–20 pairs. At another, west of Villamil, the population size is probably now small due to the cutting of mangroves. The other two populations, close to each other east of Punta Moreno, probably hold the largest demes. Their status is unknown. We estimate that the genetically effective size of the combined populations is 30–380 individuals. Because the populations are so small and restricted, they are vulnerable to any disturbance of the environment. This has probably been so throughout their history because they inhabit a fragmented habitat in a tectonically active region. New anthropogenic threats this century are an introduced wasp (Polistes versicolor), which may be a predator on a major food item (insect larvae) of the finches, and destruction of the habitat. Protection of the occupied habitat against human exploitation is required for the preservation of the species because no alternative habitat is known.  相似文献

Forty percent of pregnant women aged 37 years and over do not have prenatal diagnosis despite being eligible for a free test. The present study aimed to determine how often, and which, untested women were making a choice about this, how many declined an offer and why. A questionnaire was given to untested women, aged 37 years and over, at no less than 24 weeks gestation. A total of 375 (81.5%) women declined, 72 (16%) were not offered a test and 13 presented too late antenatally. There was a three-fold increased likelihood (OR 3.10 95% CI 1.44, 6.65) of no offer for urban non-English speaking background women, compared with the reference group (metropolitan, English speaking). Unpartnered women were also significantly less likely to receive an offer (OR 3.18, 95% CI 1.19, 8.46). Risk to the baby was the main reason for declining. When offered non-invasive prenatal screening, most decliners of prenatal diagnosis accepted, even those who declined because they were opposed to abortion. We estimate that overall 33% of older pregnant women were being offered and declining amniocentesis and/or chorion villus sampling (CVS). Only 6% were not offered a test, but this small proportion is over-represented by minority groups who must be given equal opportunity to make this choice. Apert syndrome was diagnosed in a newborn with typical facial and digital features whose only detected prenatal abnormality had been agenesis of the corpus callosum. This prompted a review of the central nervous system findings in all cases of Apert syndrome treated at the Craniofacial Center Boston Children's Hospital between 1978 and 2004. Two of 30 patients with Apert syndrome had prenatal identification of mild dilatation of the lateral cerebral ventricles and complete agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) documented with both ultrasound and MRI. Both had the common S252W mutation of FGFR2. Though cranial and orbital malformations typical of Apert were eventually seen in these fetuses in the third-trimester, even in retrospect, these were not detectable at mid second-trimester, ultrasound screening for congenital malformations. Hand malformations also went undetected in the second-trimester despite extensive imaging by experienced radiologists. We conclude that prenatal ultrasonographic identification of mild ventriculomegaly or ACC should stimulate a careful search for features of Apert syndrome and prompt follow-up imaging to look for bony abnormalities that have later onset. Although individuals in many fish species move to shallow waters to spawn, the California grunion (Leuresthes tenuis) is almost unique in its constitutive display of synchronous full-emergence beach spawning. During a spawning event, fish ride large waves onshore to spawn on beach land, where their eggs incubate terrestrially. Here, we employ molecular markers to ascertain how this unusual reproductive behavior impacts genetic parentage. We developed and utilized four highly polymorphic microsatellite markers to assess maternal and paternal contributions in a total of 682 progeny from 17 nests of a natural population of L. tenuis. Alleles deduced to be of paternal origin in progeny were used to determine the minimum number of sires per nest and to estimate the true number of sires per nest via Bayesian analysis. We document the following: (a) no instances of multiple maternity for progeny within a nest; (b) a high frequency of nests (88%) with multiple paternity; and (c) an appreciable fraction of nests (18%) in which the estimated number of genetic sires (as many as nine) proved to be greater than the observed number of male attendants, thus implicating occasional extra-group fertilization events. From these and other observations, we also conclude that spawning behavior in grunions may involve site choice but not explicit mate choice. In addition to providing the first analysis of molecular parentage in a beach-spawning fish, we compare our findings to those reported previously for a beach-spawning arthropod, and we discuss the forces that may be maintaining this peculiar reproductive behavior.  相似文献

A Capability Approach is adopted to critically analyse, in the interests of Climate Justice, whether the Paris Agreement is likely to adequately protect human and non-human Capabilities from the worst impacts of climate disasters. The mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage provisions of the Paris Agreement are not convincing. Adaptation offers only a modest response to climate change, compared with mitigation, and current financial commitments to fund adaptation in developing countries are far too low. Consequently, the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change have a long way to go in their negotiations before they have any hope of meeting their agreed temperature goals, and protecting human and non-human Capabilities from climate disasters.  相似文献

尽管大气中SO2- 4的沉降减少,地表水的酸度也因此降低,但尚未记录到广泛的生物从酸化中恢复过来.本文通过考察1971~2000年间加拿大安大略省基拉尼公园的46个湖泊甲壳类浮游动物种的丰富度(物种数目)和组成的时间变化趋势,来估计由于水质有了重大改善即pH现在>6后湖泊中生物的恢复程度,并与其他两组(从未酸化的湖泊和仍然酸化的湖泊[pH<6])作比较.在这三组湖泊中,物种丰富度的时间趋势无法加以区别,物种丰富度的变化也不能说明恢复的程度.对比之下,在pH值增加到6以上的湖泊中,其浮游动物群落的组成(以物种多度的多变量指数表征)则有所变化,从"损害"状态返回到了中性湖泊的典型状态.在酸性湖泊也记录到浮游动物组成有某些恢复.虽然仍为酸性,这些湖泊的pH水平已经升高.基拉尼省公园里甲壳类浮游动物恢复的程度和速度为北美和欧洲其他酸化地区的将来预示了光明的前景.  相似文献
