This note describes a technique for cutting undisturbed brittleblock samples into smaller specimens for further geotechnical testing. This technique revealed very useful in dealing with collapsible soils, where the sampling is recommended to be donewith block soil samples. A further use of this technique as an efficient way for sampling collapsible soils is proposed.  相似文献

The use of the xenon isotopes for detection of nuclear explosions is of great interest for monitoring compliance with the comprehensive nuclear-test-ban treaty (CTBT). Recently, the automated radioxenon sampler-analyzer (ARSA) was tested at the Institute for Atmospheric Radioactivity (IAR) in Freiburg, Germany to ascertain its use for the CTBT by comparing its results to laboratory-based analyses, determining its detection sensitivity and analyzing its results in light of historical xenon isotope levels and known reactor operations in the area. Xe-133 was detected nearly every day throughout the test at activity concentrations ranging between approximately 0.1 mBq/m3 to as high as 120 mBq/m3. Xe-133m and 135Xe were also detected occasionally during the test at concentrations of less than 1 to a few mBq/m3.  相似文献

This paper reports on a bidding game applied to estimate aesthetic damages from possible construction of the Kaiparowits power plant near Lake Powell. Three problems associated with the interpretation of bidding games are explored theoretically and empirically: (1) incentives for biased responses, (2) divergences between compensating and equivalent variation and (3) problems of interpersonal comparison in the aggregation of individual bids.  相似文献

Summary Harsh physico-chemical conditions during early development may select for parental care. However, no study on the evolution of parental care has focused on the physico-chemical conditions in the environment, the physiological needs of early life stages and the significance of parental care. Early development of the bromeliad crab is completed in small rainwater reservoirs in bromeliad leaf axils. Axils not cared for by mother crabs are acidic, hypoxic and contain very little Ca2+. Maternal care buffers axil water and increases oxygen and Ca2+ availability. Our results show that (a) bromeliad crab larvae die at pH levels usually found in unattended axils, but develop successfully into the first crab stage at the pH typical of cared-for axils; (b) oxygen concentration in unattended axils is below the critical concentration for larvae, but is high enough for normal respiration in cared-for axils; (c) the calcium demand of larvae for moulting and development cannot be satisfied in unattended axils, but is met by the higher calcium content of cared-for axils. Therefore, physicochemical conditions in the bromeliad axil habitat exert strong selection for the maintenance of parental care in the bromeliad crab. Correspondence to: R. Diesel  相似文献

Sediment samples from rivers and lakes of Berlin (Germany) were analysed for their contamination with organic compounds by means of qualitative and quantitative GC/MS analysis. The principal compounds detected were PAH, organotin derivates, several classes of chlorinated, brominated and mixed halogenated compounds and some of their related metabolites. The DDT metabolites DDD, DDE, DDCN, DDMU and DDMS were the most abundant compounds of halogenated pesticides in a wide range of samples. The main metabolite determined was p,p′-DDD, with concentrations up to 1230 μg/kg dw. The parent DDT compound was detected in only a few samples. The acute cytotoxicity of selected DDT-metabolites was determined with the permanent cell line RTG-2 from the gonads of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The results indicate a high cytotoxic potential of these metabolites. The oestrogenic potential was determined by the Dot-Blot/RNase-Protection-Assay an the order from o,p′-DDT>p,p′-DDMS>p,p′-DDMU≥p,p′-DDCN. Risk assessments based on chemical analysis of DDT, DDD and DDE alone is not able to estimate the real toxic potential of DDT and its metabolites. The development of a method for bioassay directed assessment seems to be an effective strategy to solve this problem. Especially scarce or not available data of combinatory effects, differences between different trophic levels and their availability to biota and low knowledge about the metabolism in situ as well as the enantioselective characteristics of most chiral DDT metabolites warrant future analyses.  相似文献
