Leachate, generated by the decomposition of animal carcasses, presents many environmental, sanitary, and food safety hazards. However, research on the characteristics of leachate is lacking. In this study, we performed biochemical profiling of leachate from two animal species (pig and cattle) in two soil types (sandy loam and sandy soil) using 1H-NMR-based profiling, followed by multivariate data analysis. The leachate was collected from a well-controlled artificial burial site over a 31-week period. Principal components analysis (PCA) of the NMR data showed similar patterns between species and soil types. Organic components, including organic acids and phenols, predominated, and their levels increased with time. The methylamine level in leachate from pig carcasses 18 weeks following burial was significantly higher than that from cattle carcasses; leachate from cattle carcasses in sandy soil 1 week after burial contained unique components (specifically ethanol, formate, alanine, N-methylation, and taurine), in contrast with those from sandy loam soil. This study suggests that a NMR-based profiling approach is useful to characterize the organic components in leachate from animal carcasses over time. 相似文献

Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) cause foodborne and waterborne viral gastroenteritis worldwide. Because HuNoV culture systems have not been developed thus far, no available medicines or vaccines preventing infection with HuNoVs exist. Some herbal extracts were considered as phytomedicines because of their bioactive components. In this study, the inhibitory effects of 29 edible herbal extracts against the norovirus surrogates murine norovirus (MNV) and feline calicivirus (FCV) were examined. FCV was significantly inhibited to 86.89 ± 2.01 and 48.71 ± 7.38% by 100 μg/mL of Camellia sinensis and Ficus carica, respectively. Similarly, ribavirin at a concentration of 100 μM significantly reduced the titer of FCV by 77.69 ± 10.40%. Pleuropterus multiflorus (20 μg/mL) showed antiviral activity of 53.33 ± 5.77, and 50.00 ± 16.67% inhibition was observed after treatment with 20 μg/mL of Alnus japonica. MNV was inhibited with ribavirin by 59.22 ± 16.28% at a concentration of 100 μM. Interestingly, MNV was significantly inhibited with 150 µg/mL Inonotus obliquus and 50 μg/mL Crataegus pinnatifida by 91.67 ± 5.05 and 57.66 ± 3.36%, respectively. Treatment with 20 µg/mL Coriandrum sativum slightly reduced MNV by 45.24 ± 4.12%. The seven herbal extracts of C. sinensis, F. carica, P. multiflorus, A. japonica, I. obliquus, C. pinnatifida, and C. sativum may have the potential to control noroviruses without cytotoxicity. 相似文献

A highly sensitive sodium (Na+) transfer tissue biosensor (STTB) was designed using a frog bladder membrane to measure paralytic shellfish poisons (PSP). The STTB consists, of a Na+ electrode covered by the membrane, which was then integrated into a flow-through system for continuous measurements. In the absence of Na+ channel blocker, active transfer of Na+ occurred from inside to outside across the frog membrane. When the STTB was used to measure the Na+ -dependent dissociation of PSP, it was able to detect PSB at a level contained in a single cell. However, 5 fg or higher (100 cells or more) is needed for accurate and reproducible measurements. The toxicity obtained by the STTB was significantly correlated (r = 0.9449) to that determined by the HPLC. Therefore, the simple method of the STTB can be used not only to detect a low level PSP in toxic plankton populations, but also to monitor poisons in shellfish. 相似文献

In this study, a new empirical equation for the transverse dispersion coefficient has been developed based on the hydraulic
and geometric parameters in natural streams using a regression technique. First, a total of 32 data sets in 16 streams were
collected. Among those sets, 16 sets were used for deriving the new equation, and the other 16 sets were used for verifying
the equation. Then, through dimensional analysis, it was found that the normalized transverse dispersion coefficient is associated
with several parameters such as sinuosity, aspect ratio, and a friction term. The robust least square method was applied to
estimate regression coefficients. The newly proposed equation was proven to be superior in explaining the dispersion characteristics

Cracking, steam reforming, dry reforming, and combined steam and dry reforming of toluene in model syngas were performed using catalysts to simulate tar removal produced during biomass gasification. The catalysts were prepared by adding Ru, Ca, and Mn to Ni-based catalysts, and their properties were measured using BET, pulse CO chemisorption, XRD and TG. In steam and dry reforming of toluene, a high toluene conversion was observed with increasing Ca content in the catalyst and catalysts containing Ca showed a higher activity than those containing Mn. In combined steam-dry reforming with syngas, 1%CaNiRu/Al2O3 indicated a conversion of 93.9% at 800°C. 相似文献

Sudokwon landfill is the largest sanitary landfill in South Korea. The Environmental-Adverse-Effect Zone (EAEZ) from the boundary of a Sudokwon landfill site was set up to give the community compensation by a landfill developer to support special financial favors to every household resident. One group of residents in the EAEZ would continually receive the community compensation after 2010 and the other group would not because of changing the landfill site in 2009. These situations in Sudokwon landfill raise the question of whether the cash payment to residents for the community compensation may increase the acceptance of the waste landfill site and whether ceasing community compensation may create new Not in My Backyard (NIMBY) syndrome concerning landfill operations. Answers from questionnaires showed that 279 respondents (Group A) had experienced Resident Supportive Projects (RSP) and the other (86 respondents, Group B) had not. Most of the respondents (more than 80?%) in Group A who had received compensation answered that the sort of RSP was the direct cash payment. 37?% of respondents in Group A and 29?% of all respondents reported RSP as helpful. The 24?% of respondents who lived in the area released from the EAEZ in 2009 were ‘very reduced’ or ‘reduced’, while the corresponding results were 38?% in the continued EAEZ area. These different responses were statistically significant. And many respondents (70.6?%) recognized that the level of RSP (especially the monetary payment) was not enough. This ratio is unusual compared with a previous result (Lee PhD thesis, 2001), which was 6.2?% in 2000. The relative ratio of respondents living in the continued EAEZ area answered ‘very high’ or ‘high’ on the questions of knowledge regarding the sort of RSP, RSP cost, satisfaction of public participation, the process to decide the RSP, and the helpfulness of the RSP, which are statistically significant. In addition, respondents wanted the projects for welfare and resident convenience facilities with the same ratio (29.7?%) among several projects. These results suggest that the effect of the direct cash payment on the response of residents is similar to North America and Europe. Additionally, long periods of support of the public projects to develop resident communities may be required in order to improve resident acceptance of sitting landfill. 相似文献

A plastic fraction consisting mainly of polyurethane/styrofoam waste is generated after separating valuable spare parts and
metals from used electrical home appliances. In Korea, such waste is currently incinerated in cement kilns or is landfilled.
However, owing to its high volatile matter content, conversion into gaseous or liquid pyrolysis products is a preferable alternative.
A pyrolysis process of polyurethane and styrofoam waste from electrical home appliances was evaluated by characterizing the
products generated at 500°–800°C. The para meters determined were the yields of gas, oil, and char; the characteristics of
the remaining char; and the con centration of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/polychlorinated dibenzo-furans in the product gas. As expected, the char yield decreased at higher temperatures,
whereas gas and oil yields showed increasing tendency. The oil products could be used as storable fuels with a calorific value
of 6000–8000 kcal/kg. Fine pores were observed in the char. The adsorption and decolorizing ability of the char were almost
the same as those of activated carbon, so that pyrolysis char has potential for use as a sorbent. Further feasibility studies
will be needed before utilizing pyrolysis technology to recover either fuels or usable products from polyurethane/styrofoam

The expression levels of cytochrome P450 1A, p53 and vitellogenin were investigated in three different tissues of male medaka fish after exposure to diclofenac that is one of the main concerns among pharmaceuticals frequently found in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents. The results showed that cytochrome P450 1A, p53 and vitellogenin were highly expressed in tissue-specific gene expression patterns after exposure to 8 mg/l and 1 μg/l of diclofenac. These elevated expression levels of three biomarkers suggested that diclofenac has potential to cause cellular toxicity, p53-related genotoxicity and estrogenic effects. It is also noteworthy that diclofenac has the potential to cause these effects even at an environmentally relevant concentration of diclofenac, 1 μg/l. 相似文献
