Abstract

Ozone dry deposition fluxes and velocities were measured in 1994 in a semi–arid steppe of central Spain and in a forest in southern France during the period of photochemical activity using the gradient method. Downward fluxes were systematically obtained in both sites, with lower values at nighttime and maximum values during the central period of the day, which showed the important role of stomata in ozone uptake. The range of deposition velocities was –0.005 to 1.160 in the forested site and 0.001 to 1.430 cm s–1 in the semi–arid steppe. The nocturnal deposition velocities observed in the semi–arid steppe were considerably higher than in the forest, with values up to 0.35 cm s–1.

A single layer canopy model was applied and validated at both sites. The model fitted the daily patterns well but underestimated the observed values by 34% in the forest and by 10% in the semi–arid steppe. To improve the accuracy of the model, both soil and internal stomatal resistances, Rsoil and Ri, were estimated using a least square technique. The interdependence of both parameters and the relative humidity, rH, was evaluated through a statistical analysis of the residual between the observed deposition velocity and the aerodynamic, sub–layer, and stomatal resistances. The comparison between the parameter estimates under wet and dry conditions in both sites showed (1) the influence of rH on stomatal parameter and soil resistance, (2) the large contribution of stomatal conductance to ozone uptake during the daytime, and (3) the importance of soil as an additional pathway for ozone exchange, especially in the steppe. Taking into account the parameter estimates, the underestimate of the modeled results was 3% in the forest and 5% in the semi–arid steppe.  相似文献

This paper is based on a review of the methodological approaches associated with solid waste management (SWM) in the context of sub-Saharan African (SSA) cities. Using Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as a case study, the paper proposes a new way of looking at solid waste in the bid to come up with alternative methods to improve the plight of SWM. A combination of qualitative research methods and system analysis have been employed to evaluate the causal relationships observed in contemporary SWM systems in Kinshasa. This paper argues that there is an absence of coherent and broad-based approaches to SWM in Kinshasa as is common in other SSA countries. Empirical evidence suggests that contemporary SWM strategies and approaches developed on a global scale which have increasingly been adopted by the Congolese national and local government authorities have proven inadequate to address the SWM realities on a local level. Using system thinking and system dynamics, this paper attempts to develop a feasible methodological framework focusing on the formulation of an appropriate approach to improve SWM in Kinshasa. It is argued that new ways of approaching the complexity that exists in SWM will facilitate the adoption of technologies and innovative ways of thinking and managing solid waste in a more sustainable, socially, and environmentally accepted manner.  相似文献

The technical feasibility and performances of coupling flushing abilities of cyclodextrin solutions for 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) removal from contaminated soil and the ability of Photo-Fenton treatment for final disposal of soil extract solutions containing high TNT loads have been investigated at laboratory scale. Methylated-beta-cyclodextrin (MCD) has shown better ability than hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) to complex TNT. The MCD solution increased the aqueous concentration of TNT in soil extract effluents as much as 2.1 times the concentrations obtained during the water flush of the soil. TNT in soil extract solution has been treated by Photo-Fenton. Our results indicate that MCD has a beneficial effect on the degradation rates of TNT. This relative improvement of TNT degradation rate (1.3 time) in presence of high amounts of hydroxyl radical scavengers can be ascribed to the formation of a ternary complex (TNT-cyclodextrin-iron) which can direct hydroxyl radical reaction toward TNT. Complete mineralization of soil extraction solutions was not achieved and TNT degradation pathway has been elucidated in order to ensure that no potential toxic intermediate is left at the end of the treatment time. After successive TNT hydroxylations, oxidative opening of the TNT aromatic ring quickly occurred, leading to the accumulation of short chain carboxylic acids such as oxalic acid and formic acid.  相似文献

Least‐cost implementation of the mitigation hierarchy of impacts on biodiversity minimizes the cost of a given level of biodiversity conservation, at project or ecosystem levels, and requires minimizing costs across and within hierarchy steps. Incentive‐based policy instruments that price biodiversity to alter producer and consumer behavior and decision making are generally the most effective way to achieve least‐cost implementation across and within the different hierarchy steps and across all producers and conservation channels. Nonetheless, there are circumstances that favor direct regulation or intrinsic motivation. Conservatory offsets, introduced within the conservatory first three steps of the mitigation hierarchy, rather than the fourth step to compensate the residual, provide an additional incentive‐based policy instrument. The least‐cost mitigation hierarchy framework, induced through incentive‐based policy instruments, including conservatory offsets, mitigates fisheries bycatch consistent with given targets, the Law of the Sea, and the Convention on Biological Diversity.  相似文献

DOI: 10.1111/j.1752‐1688.2011.00560.x Abstract: A methodology is presented for mapping the flooded extent of rivers under projected climate change. The methodology follows a top‐down modeling approach, where future climate projections generated by global climate models (GCMs) are downscaled to the watershed scale and used as input to hydrological and hydrodynamic models for predicting future river flows and associated open water levels. A range of possible future climate responses are taken into account, allowing quantification of flood‐mapping uncertainties resulting from GCM structure and greenhouse gas emission scenarios (GHGES). Probabilistic projections of future flood zones are developed by assuming that all GCMs and GHGES be equally weighted. The proposed methodology was applied to two river basins located in southern Quebec, Canada, for the time horizons 2020 and 2080. Twenty‐ and hundred‐year floods were computed and corresponding flood maps have been produced. Results indicate that there is a general trend toward an increased spring peak discharge for the Châteauguay River Basin and a decrease for the du Nord River Basin at the 2020 horizon. A less obvious trend was observed for the 2080 horizon, some GCM‐GHGES producing an increase in spring peak flows, whereas others would result in a less severe spring flood. These uncertainties in flood flows have cascaded into uncertainties in the corresponding flooded extent and represented as probabilistic flood maps.  相似文献

Integrated Assessment (IA) models aim at providing information- and decision-support to complex problems. This paper argues that uncertainty analysis in IA models should be user-driven in order to strengthen science–policy interaction. We suggest an approach to uncertainty analysis that starts with investigating model users’ demands for uncertainty information. These demands are called “uncertainty information needs”. Identifying model users’ uncertainty information needs allows focusing the analysis on those uncertainties which users consider relevant and meaningful. As an illustrative example, we discuss the case of examining users’ uncertainty information needs in the SEAMLESS Integrated Framework (SEAMLESS-IF), an IA model chain for assessing and comparing alternative agricultural and environmental policy options. The most important user group of SEAMLESS-IF are policy experts at the European and national level. Uncertainty information needs of this user group were examined in an interactive process during the development of SEAMLESS-IF and by using a questionnaire. Results indicate that users’ information requirements differed from the uncertainty categories considered most relevant by model developers. In particular, policy experts called for addressing a broader set of uncertainty sources (e.g. model structure and technical model setup). The findings highlight that investigating users’ uncertainty information needs is an essential step towards creating confidence in an IA model and its outcomes. This alone, however, may not be sufficient for effectively implementing a user-oriented uncertainty analysis in such models. As the case study illustrates, it requires to include uncertainty analysis into user participation from the outset of the IA modelling process.  相似文献

The French Atlantic coast contains large highly productive intertidal mudflats that are colonised by juveniles of numerous flatfish species, including the common sole (Solea solea, L.). These ecosystems are also heavily exploited by the shellfish farming industry. Intensive bivalve culture is associated with substantial biodeposition (1–6 t-dw ha−1 day−1), which directly or indirectly contributes to increase exopolysaccharide (EPS) concentrations at the interface between water column and seabed. EPS are long-chain molecules organised into colloids, which influence rheological properties of water, particularly viscosity. Increased water viscosity had consequences for ventilatory activity of juvenile flatfish, whereby the minimal pressure required to ventilate the medium increases directly with EPS concentration. Moreover, the critical EPS concentration ([EPS]crit) at which water was no longer able to flow through the branchial basket ranged from almost nil to over 30 mg l−1, depending on species and size. [EPS]crit was lower in small individuals and individuals from species with high metabolic rates (turbot and plaice). These differences may depend upon gill and bucco-branchial cavity morphometrics. The ventilatory workload of sole increased with viscosity to a maximum at 2 mg EPS l−1. Viscosity might, therefore, be a limiting factor for flatfish post larvae, which colonise the intertidal mudflats, depending upon their size and species. EPS concentrations in the field can reach 15 mg l−1. A selective effect is conceivable but remains to be estimated in the field.  相似文献
