Habitat destruction leading to increased fragmentation is detrimental to species by reducing population size and genetic diversity and by restraining population connectivity. However, little is known about the effects of naturally fragmented habitats on wild populations, especially when it comes to marine benthic invertebrates with long pelagic larval duration. In this framework, we investigated the connectivity and genetic diversity variation among nine wild populations of the black-lipped pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, throughout French Polynesia using ten microsatellite DNA markers. Despite the naturally fragmented habitat (South Pacific oceanic islands), we found high values of genetic diversity and population admixture, indicating connectivity at small and large spatial scales within sampled sites of the Tuamotu, and between the Society and Tuamotu Archipelagos. In the meantime, habitat geomorphology increased genetic drift in populations occurring in small, closed lagoons. Significant genetic structure not correlated to geographic distance was detected mainly between closed and open lagoons. The Marquesas Islands hosted the most divergent populations, likely a result of vicariance. Our results also highlight that migration patterns among lagoons are not symmetrical. Altogether, the general pattern of gene flow, nonsymmetrical migration rates among populations, absence of isolation by distance and absence of recent extinction events found in our study strongly suggest that P. margaritifera populations of French Polynesia follow an asymmetrical island model of dispersal. 相似文献

Oxygen isotope compositions of bone phosphate (δ18Op) were measured in broiler chickens reared in 21 farms worldwide characterized by contrasted latitudes and local climates. These sedentary birds were raised during an approximately 3 to 4-month period, and local precipitation was the ultimate source of their drinking water. This sampling strategy allowed the relationship to be determined between the bone phosphate δ18Op values (from 9.8 to 22.5‰ V-SMOW) and the local rainfall δ18Ow values estimated from nearby IAEA/WMO stations (from ?16.0 to ?1.0‰ V-SMOW). Linear least square fitting of data provided the following isotopic fractionation equation: δ18Ow = 1.119 (±0.040) δ18Op ? 24.222 (±0.644); R 2 = 0.98. The δ18Op–δ18Ow couples of five extant mallard ducks, a common buzzard, a European herring gull, a common ostrich, and a greater rhea fall within the predicted range of the equation, indicating that the relationship established for extant chickens can also be applied to birds of various ecologies and body masses. Applied to published oxygen isotope compositions of Miocene and Pliocene penguins from Peru, this new equation computes estimates of local seawater similar to those previously calculated. Applied to the basal bird Confuciusornis from the Early Cretaceous of Northeastern China, our equation gives a slightly higher δ18Ow value compared to the previously estimated one, possibly as a result of lower body temperature. These data indicate that caution should be exercised when the relationship estimated for modern birds is applied to their basal counterparts that likely had a metabolism intermediate between that of their theropod dinosaur ancestors and that of advanced ornithurines. 相似文献

This article studies differences in the results of using different risk estimation tools in the same hazardous situations involving dangerous machinery. We investigated how (a) types of risk estimation parameters and methods of constructing tools, (b) the number of levels of each parameter, and (c) the number of risk levels influence the results. Consequently, 31 risk estimation tools were compared by using them to estimate risk levels associated with 20 hazardous situations. Risk estimation appears to be tool-dependent, as different tools give different results with identical hazardous situations. The scope of the tool, its use, and construction could explain these differences. This article also proposes a series of rules for constructing tools to alleviate many problems associated with the variability of risk estimations. 相似文献

Transport of gellan gum microbeads through sand: an experimental evaluation for encapsulated cell bioaugmentation 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Transport of 10-40 microm gellan gum microbeads was studied in horizontal sand columns to evaluate the feasibility of using gel-encapsulated bacteria for bioaugmentation of contaminated aquifers. Three 5.2 x 110 cm columns were packed with sand (column A: 0.5-2 mm, column B: 0.25-2 mm, and column C: 0.125-2 mm). Microbeads in artificial groundwater were injected at 0.5 l h(-1) during intermittent 12-h periods. Breakthrough of microbeads increased with injection time, varying as a descending function of travel distance. After 72 h of injection, about 75% of injected microbeads were dispersed across a 5-110 cm distance from the inlet in column A, compared to 78% across a 5-50 cm in column B, and 76% across a 5-20 cm in column C. The wider dispersion of microbeads across the length of column A, compared to those observed in columns B and C, suggests a higher potential for the formation of a uniform bioactive zone of encapsulated cells across a sandy aquifer with such grain size distribution and hydrodynamic properties. 相似文献

The adsorption/transformation of two members (clarithromycin and roxithromycin) of the macrolide (ML) antibacterial agents on the surface of three environmental subsurface sorbents (clay, iron(III) and manganese(IV) oxy-hydroxides) was investigated. The adsorption fitted well to the Freundlich model with a high sorption capacity. Adsorption probably occurred through a surface complexation mechanism and was accompanied by slow degradation of the selected MLs. Transformation proceeded through two parallel pathways: a major pathway was the hydrolysis of the cladinose sugar, and to a lesser extent the hydrolysis of the lactone ring. A minor pathway was the N-dealkylation of the amino sugar. This study indicates that Fe(III) and Mn(IV) oxy-hydroxides in aquatic sediments may play an important role in the natural attenuation of MLs. The Marennes-Oléron Bay, hosting the largest oyster production in France, is influenced by the historic polymetallic pollution of the Gironde Estuary. Despite management efforts and decreasing emissions in the Gironde watershed, cadmium levels in oysters from the bay are close to the consumption limit (5 μg g−1 dw, EC). From mid April to mid July 2009, we investigated the role of tidal resuspension and regional hydrodynamics on Cd speciation (seawater, SPM, phytoplankton, sediment, microphytobenthos) and bioaccumulation in 18 month-old oysters (gills, digestive glands, rests of tissues) reared under natural conditions (i) at ∼60 cm above the sediment and (ii) on the sediment surface. Dissolved and particulate Cd concentrations in surface and bottom waters were similar and constant over tidal cycle suggesting the absence of Cd release during sediment resuspension. Temporal dissolved and particulate Cd concentrations were closely related to Gironde Estuary water discharges, showing increasing concentrations during flood situations and decreasing concentrations afterwards. Cd depletion in the water column was associated with increasing Cd in the [20-100 μm] plankton fraction, suggesting Cd bioaccumulation. After 3 months, enrichment factors of Cd in tissues of oysters exposed in the water column and directly on the sediment were respectively 3.0 and 2.2 in gills, 4.7 and 3.2 in digestive glands and 4.9 and 3.4 in remaining tissues. Increasing Cd bioaccumulation in gills, digestive glands and remaining tissues can be related to elevated dissolved Cd in the bay, suggesting gill contamination via the direct pathway and subsequent internal redistribution of Cd to other organs and tissues. Elevated Cd contents in oysters reared on tables could be attributed to different trophic Cd transfer (phytoplankton versus microphytobenthos) or to different oyster metabolisms between the rearing conditions as suggested by metallothionein concentrations. 相似文献

Abstract Ozone dry deposition fluxes and velocities were measured in 1994 in a semi–arid steppe of central Spain and in a forest in southern France during the period of photochemical activity using the gradient method. Downward fluxes were systematically obtained in both sites, with lower values at nighttime and maximum values during the central period of the day, which showed the important role of stomata in ozone uptake. The range of deposition velocities was –0.005 to 1.160 in the forested site and 0.001 to 1.430 cm s–1 in the semi–arid steppe. The nocturnal deposition velocities observed in the semi–arid steppe were considerably higher than in the forest, with values up to 0.35 cm s–1. A single layer canopy model was applied and validated at both sites. The model fitted the daily patterns well but underestimated the observed values by 34% in the forest and by 10% in the semi–arid steppe. To improve the accuracy of the model, both soil and internal stomatal resistances, Rsoil and Ri, were estimated using a least square technique. The interdependence of both parameters and the relative humidity, rH, was evaluated through a statistical analysis of the residual between the observed deposition velocity and the aerodynamic, sub–layer, and stomatal resistances. The comparison between the parameter estimates under wet and dry conditions in both sites showed (1) the influence of rH on stomatal parameter and soil resistance, (2) the large contribution of stomatal conductance to ozone uptake during the daytime, and (3) the importance of soil as an additional pathway for ozone exchange, especially in the steppe.
