A Toxicity Reduction Evaluation (TRE) conducted on various water treatments was successful in optimizing the acute toxicity of the final effluent. In particular, we found that the acute toxicity of the sample water treated by a water treatment process should not be correlated with the concentrations of the parent compounds still remaining in the water. Therefore, it was concluded that an acute toxicity test based on a bioassay must be performed in order to evaluate the efficiency of the water treatment process for various effluents containing environmental pollutants. In addition, the treatability and the resultant toxicity was evaluated as a simple scoring system. The scoring system ranked the treated water in three classes of toxicity with the calculation of several factors for the concerned toxicity. Using an impact evaluation based on the score of the characteristics, different water treatment processes could be directly compared. The new methodology presented here is specifically effective in listing possible unit operations for a water treatment process based on the impact, and thereby enables targeted and cost-effective water treatment.  相似文献

How central-place foragers change search strategy in response to environmental conditions is poorly known. Foragers may vary the total distance travelled and how far they range from the central place in response to variation in the distribution of their prey. One potential reason as to why they would extend the length of their foraging trip and its distance from the colony would be to increase prey quality or quantity, despite incurring higher transit costs. To test this trade-off hypothesis in a species with high flight costs, we recorded the foraging behaviour of razorbills (Alca torca) using state-of-the-art techniques that log both individual horizontal (flight activity) and vertical (dive activity) movements. We show that the distance that razorbills travelled to foraging locations increased with sea-surface temperature, which may relate to higher prey quality or quantity. This relation is supported by an indirect index of patch quality, based on dive profiles, which also increased with travel distance from the colony. Furthermore, we show that this index was highest during the daily peak in diving activity, around midday. Taken together, these results suggest that razorbills are capable of adjusting their search strategies sensitively in response to proximate environmental cues.  相似文献

A mass spectrometer-based continuous emission monitor (MS-CEM) for organic compound emissions from combustion devices was developed and evaluated at the Louisiana State University (LSU) pilot-scale rotary kiln incinerator (RKI). The MS-CEM consists of a stack probe, heat-traced sampling line, vacuum pump, particulate filter, Nafion@ dryer and mass spectrometer. The mass spectrometer includes a computer that controls and optimizes the operation of the unit. The MS-CEM is capable of continuously analyzing up to 40 different volatile organic compounds on a real-time basis. The MS-CEM is capable of analyzing, computing and recording the analytical results for each and up to 40 different organic compounds in less than 0.3 s. Four different volatile organic compounds were mixed together and injected into the baghouse inlet while simultaneously analyzing each organic component exiting the RKI stack gas. The results obtained from MS-CEM were compared with the material balance values. The system response time (including the MS-CEM) varies from 1.1 to 1.5 min.  相似文献

Two full-scale systems operated in parallel, a conventional A2/O system consisting of anaerobic, anoxic and oxic compartments in succession and an inverted system consisting of anoxic, anaerobic and oxic compartments without internal recycle, were compared in terms of their phosphorus removal performance, with an emphasis on phosphate (P) release behaviors, using both operational data and simulation results. The inverted system exhibited better long-term phosphorus removal performance (0.2 ± 0.3 vs. 0.7 ± 0.7 mg/L), which should be attributed to the higher P release rate (0.79 vs. 0.60 kg P/(kg MLSS·day)) in the non-aerated compartments. The P release occurred in both the anoxic and anaerobic compartments of the inverted system, resulting in more efficient P release. Although the abundances of the ‘Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis' population in the two systems were quite similar ((19.1 ± 3.27)% and (18.4 ± 4.15)% of the total microbe (DAPI stained particles) population in the inverted and conventional systems, respectively, by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)), the high-concentration DAPI staining results show that the abundances of the whole polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) in the aerobic ends were quite different (the average ratios of the poly-P granules to total microbes (DAPI stained particles) were (45 ± 4.18)% and (35 ± 5.39)%, respectively). Both the operational data and simulation results showed that the inverted system retained more abundant PAO populations due to its special configuration, which permitted efficient P release in the non-aerated compartment and better P removal.  相似文献

Changes in the phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a), production rate, and species composition were studied over two seasons using the time series measurements in the northern limb of the Cochin estuary in relation to the prevailing hydrological conditions. The present study showed the significant seasonal variation in water temperature (F = 69.4, P < 0.01), salinity (F = 341.93, P < 0.01), dissolved inorganic phosphorous (F = 17.71, P < 0.01), and silica (F = 898.1, P < 0.01) compared to nitrogen (F = 1.646, P > 0.05). The uneven input of ammonia (3.4–224.8 μM) from upstream (Periyar River) leads to the inconsistency in the N/P ratio (range 6.8–262). A distinct seasonality was observed in Si/N (F = 382.9, P < 0.01) and Si/P (F = 290.3, P < 0.01) ratios compared to the N/P ratio (F = 1.646, P > 0.05). The substantial increase in chlorophyll a (average, 34.8 ± 10 mg m???3) and primary production (average, 1,304 ± 694 mg C m???3 day???1) indicated the mesotrophic condition of the study area during the premonsoon (PRM) and it was attributed to the large increase in the population of nanoplankton (size < 20 μ ) such as Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira subtilis, Nitzschia closterium, and Navicula directa. In contrast, during the post monsoon (PM), low chlorophyll a concentration (average, 9.3 ± 9.2 mg m???3) and primary production (average, 124 ± 219 mg C m???3 day???1) showed heterotrophic condition. It can be stated that favorable environmental conditions (optimum nutrients and light intensity) prevailing during the PRM have enhanced the abundance of the nanoplankton community in the estuary, whereas during the PM, the light limitation due to high turbidity can reduce the nanoplankton growth and abundance, even though high nutrient level exists.  相似文献

Flame retardants (FRs) are useful because they can prevent combustion and delay the spread of fire after the ignition on commercial products containing plastics. However, such commercial products could be a primary source of environmental contamination with FRs. Plastic disks containing FRs were prepared to elucidate changes in the concentrations of the FRs after weathering tests. Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) resin were separately kneaded with a combination of three organic FRs [Dechlorane plus (DP), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP)] and one inorganic FR [antimony trioxide (Sb2O3)]. The concentrations of TBBPA/TPhP and DP/Sb2O3 in the final preparations were respectively 1000 and 500 mg/kg in compliance with the RoHS directive on organobromine FR. The concentrations of elements in the final preparations were 300 mg/kg for chlorine, 600 mg/kg for bromine, 100 mg/kg for phosphorus, and 400 mg/kg for antimony, respectively. The analytical concentrations (three FRs and four elements) were consistent with the expected concentrations (maximum difference ?9.5% in the PC disks). The FRs and elements in the disks were sufficiently homogenous (maximum inhomogeneity 4.3% in the PC disks). The prepared disks were subjected to weathering tests; the concentrations of TBBPA in the disks decreased significantly (30 to 40%) whereas the concentrations of the elements did not change under the condition of this study. On the other hand, there were no drastic differences on relationships of FRs and elements such as DP/chlorine and TPhP/phosphorus.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the applicability of laser mass spectrometry for safety management of the processed gas and the work environment in a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) disposal plant. By utilization of laser ionization/ion trapping storage/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LI-IT-TOFMS), we analyzed gaseous PCBs from scrap capacitors with on-line detection. It was confirmed that few contaminants were detected in the spectrum. By the effect of laser-induced selective ionization, it was considered that there was little interference with the mass range of PCBs. The accuracy of LI-IT-TOFMS when analyzing environmental gas was almost the same as that for the PCB standard gas. It was possible to perform on-line analysis of the work environment for over 2000 h (120 000 data points). LI-IT-TOFMS was thus shown to be a very useful method for ensuring the safety of the work environment in disposal plants for PCBs.  相似文献
