In this paper, we present the first measurement of radon concentrations in drinking groundwater from private and public deep-bored wells located in the south-eastern area of Korea. The measurements were carried out on 439 samples by using a liquid scintillation method. The results show that the radon concentrations of the samples range from 0 to about 300 Bq l(-1). We find that Sasang ward shows the highest median value of radon concentration among 13 different wards, while Jung ward has the lowest. We find that the radon concentrations are highly dependent on the type of geological rock aquifers.  相似文献

A methodology for optimized contaminated land investigation (OCLI) is described that balances the uncertainty of measurements against the cost of taking the measurements and the financial losses that may arise from misclassification of the land. Uncertainty from the sources of both field sampling and chemical analysis is estimated using existing techniques, based on the taking of duplicated samples. The actual costs of sampling and analysis and the expected costs that could arise from either 'false positive' or 'false negative' classification of areas of land were estimated. A loss function was constructed that calculates the expectation of financial loss that will arise for a given uncertainty of measurement. The function shows a clear minimum value of cost at an optimal value of uncertainty. Application of this OCLI technique to two case studies demonstrated this minimum value. Below the optimum value of uncertainty, the costs increased due to higher measurement costs. Above the optimum, the costs increased due to increasing risk of factors such as unnecessary remediation or potential litigation over undetected contamination. Many areas for further development of OCLI are identified, but the technique is demonstrated as a useful new approach to judging fitness-for-purpose of such measurements.  相似文献

Recently, a worker with lung carcinoma and a metastatic brain tumor was diagnosed as having a work-related disease. He had been employed in a non-asbestos textile company for 25 years. Consequently, to identify and explore possible causative agents for lung cancer in a non-asbestos textile manufacturing company and establish a causal relationship between exposure and lung cancer, an epidemiological investigative study was conducted and the work processes the worker was engaged in were examined. Air samples were taken from the workplace and during the drilling processes, and a suspected causative material was analyzed. The study revealed that the subject had been employed in the non-asbestos textile manufacturing company for 25 years from 1973 and his responsibilities included repairing spinning machines. In particular, the subject was involved in drilling B-bushings that were used to protect against gear abrasion in the spinning machines. An analysis of the B-bushings using a transmission electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer indicated that they contained crocidolite asbestos fibers. Air samples obtained when drilling the B-bushings clearly indicated that the subject had most likely been exposed to crocidolite fibers when installing the B-bushings in the spinning machines. The frequency and duration of the work suggested that there would be a sufficient degree of exposure to crocidolite fibers to cause lung cancer. Except for smoking and asbestos exposure, no other chemical exposure was suspected for developing lung cancer in the workplace. Smoking appeared to be more of a potentiating risk factor in conjunction with the asbestos exposure. Accordingly, this case may provide significant evidence in identifying the cause of the mesothelioma or lung carcinoma found among workers in non-asbestos textile manufacturing companies elsewhere.  相似文献

Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is a widely used plasticizer known to be a suspected endocrine disrupter, but its precise effects on aquatic organisms are not yet known. When Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) were exposed from the time of hatching to 3 months of age to an aqueous DEHP solution at nominal concentrations of 1, 10, and 50 microg/l, DEHP-treated female fish showed distinct reproductive effects as follows. First, blood vitellogenin levels in all treated test subjects markedly decreased. Second, Gonado Somatic Index (GSI) decreased to 33% and 38% of the control GSI in 10 microg/l and 50 microg/l treated female fish, respectively. Third, 54% of female fish in the control treatment had completely matured oocytes in their ovaries, but only 37%, 0% and 22% of female fish matured to the last stage in the 1, 10 and 50 microg/l treated test subjects, respectively. Unlike female fish, no change or adverse effects were observed in the male fish. In summary, DEHP hinders the development of reproductive organs in the female Japanese medaka. In this work, the possibility o f anti-estrogenic activity of DEHP is proposed as the cause.  相似文献

We have measured 90Sr activities in the marine environment (seawater, sediments and organisms) off the two Korean atomic power stations at Gori and Weolseong. The marine sampling sites were chosen in the vicinity of the power stations to investigate the dispersion of any local 90Sr sources. The 90Sr activities in seawater ranged from 1.3 to 1.9 mBq/l (mean: 1.4, n = 16) and 0.9 to 1.5 mBq/l (mean: 1.3, n = 29) at the Gori and Weolseong sites, respectively. These activities are comparable with those reported for the remote open ocean, suggesting that the 90Sr at these sites originated primarily from global fallout, which occurred during the 1960s, rather than from any local sources. The 90Sr activities in marine sediments ranged from 116 to 1,277 mBq/kg (mean: 565, n = 12) and from 304 to 1,799 mBq/kg (mean 933, n = 6) at the Gori and Weolseong sites, respectively. The horizontal distribution of 90Sr in surface sediments appears to be affected by grain size as well as local sedimentation rate. The enrichment of 90Sr in fish (5.5 +/- 2.6 mBq/kg, n = 5) and shellfish (7.1 +/- 1.2 mBq/kg, n = 2) was much lower than that in seaweed (57 +/- 33 mBq/kg, n = 5).  相似文献

This study analyzed the recycling potential of plastic wastes generated by health care facilities. For this study, we obtained waste streams and recycling data from five typical city hospitals and medical centers and three animal hospitals in Massachusetts. We analyzed the sources, disposal costs and plastic content of medical wastes, and also determined the components, sources, types and amounts of medical plastic wastes. We then evaluated the recycling potential of plastic wastes produced by general city hospital departments, such as cafeterias, operating rooms, laboratories, emergency rooms, ambulance service and facilities, and animal hospitals. Facilities, laboratories, operating rooms, and cafeterias were identified as major sources of plastic wastes generated by hospitals. It was determined that the recycling potential of plastics generated in hospital cafeterias was much greater than that in other departments. This was mainly due to a very slight chance of contamination or infection and simplification of purchasing plastic components. Finally, we discuss methods to increase the recycling of medical plastic wastes. This study suggests that a classification at waste generating sources, depending upon infection chance and/or plastic component, could be a method for the improved recycling of plastic wastes in hospitals.  相似文献

Pesticide volatilization models are typically based on equilibrium partitioning of the chemical into solid, liquid, and gaseous phases in the soil environment. In turf systems direct vaporization from vegetation surfaces is a more likely source, and it is difficult to apply equilibrium methods to plant material due to the uncertainties of solid-liquid-gas partitioning. An alternative approach is to assume that pesticide volatilization is governed by the same processes that affect water evaporation. A model was developed in which evapotranspiration values, as determined by the Penman equation, were adjusted to chemical vaporization using ratios of water and chemical saturated vapor pressures and latent heats of vaporization. The model also assumes first-order degradation of pesticide on turf vegetation over time. The model was tested by comparisons of predictions with measurements of volatilization for eight pesticides measured during 3 to 7 d in 11 field experiments. Measured volatilization fluxes ranged from 0.1 to 22% of applied chemical. Pesticides were divided into two groups based on saturated vapor pressures and organic C partition coefficients. One pesticide was selected from each group to calibrate the model's volatilization constant for the group, and the remaining pesticides were used for model testing. Testing results indicated that the model provides relatively conservative estimates of pesticide volatilization. Predicted mean losses exceeded observations by 20%, and the model explained 67% of the observed variation in volatilization fluxes. The model was most accurate for those chemicals that exhibited the largest volatilization losses.  相似文献

In this paper we construct for the first time an annual Composite Environmental Index from 1986 to 1995 in Korea, which is useful for evaluating the efficiency of environmental policies. Nine types of environmental problems are examined. On average, the composite index has increased annually by 5.3% over the 1986-1995 period, which implies that overall environmental quality has deteriorated gradually during this period. Problems such as the greenhouse effect, loss of biodiversity, natural resource depletion, and ecotoxication led to deterioration of environmental quality in the 1990s.  相似文献

A shallow-depth ground water area was investigated to identify the dominant processes governing the distribution of hydrocarbon contaminants and hydrogeochemical parameters. The ground water in the study site has been highly contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. A preliminary pump-and-treatment remediation technology was applied for 4 yr at the site. Multivariate analyses were applied to hydrogeochemical data obtained before and after the rainy season. The pump-and-treatment application, indigenous biodegradation, and mixing by precipitation recharge are the major factors or events involved in the distribution of geochemical parameters of the ground water in the study area. Site-specific artificial pavement also played an important role in the evolution of the ground water chemistry. A conventional graphical analysis method (Piper plot) of major ions did not effectively reveal these effects. In this study, we demonstrate the usefulness of multivariate analysis (factor and cluster analyses) using biodegradation indicator parameters, as well as major cations and anions, for the study of the ground water system in the hydrocarbon-contaminated site.  相似文献

Surfactants can increase the solubility of non-polar compounds, and have been applied in areas such as soil washing and treatment of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). This investigation explored the feasibility of removing vapor phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) from gases using an anionic surfactant. The solubility of vapor phase naphthalene was measured herein using gas chromatograph (GC) with a photon ionization detector (PID). The measurement results indicated that surfactant molecules were not favorable to micelle formation when temperatures increased from 25 degrees C to 50 degrees C. Regardless of whether solutions were quiescent or agitated, equilibrium naphthalene apparent solubility increased linearly with surfactant concentrations exceeding critical micelle concentration (CMC). The pH effects on naphthalene apparent solubility were small. Agitation increased naphthalene apparent solubility and lumped mass transfer coefficients. Furthermore, lumped mass transfer coefficients decreased with increasing surfactant concentration owing to increase in interfacial resistance and viscosity and decreased spherical micelle diffusion coefficients. Finally, the net absorption rate increased because the solubilization effects of micelles exceeded the reduction effects of mass transfer coefficient above the CMC. The enhanced naphthalene apparent solubility from the addition of surfactant can be expressed by an enrichment factor (EF). The EF value of naphthalene for the surfactant solution at 0.1 M with agitation at 270 rpm relative to quiescent water could reach 18.6. This work confirms that anionic surfactant can improve the removal efficiency of hydrophobic organic compound (HOC) from the gas phase.  相似文献
