The biology of two species of Donax, D. incarnatus Gmelin and D. spiculum Reeve on two beaches in south west India is described. Two year groups of D. incarnatus were present on both beaches, from settlements during the monsoon period in 1967 and 1968. At Shertallai, both groups were studied through the year, and data on growth, mortality and production are presented. At Cochin, the rate of growth was slower and the maximum size attained smaller, but mortality during the early monsoon precluded study of D. incarnatus through a full year. D. spiculum occurred at Cochin mainly during the pre-monsoon period, and at Shertallai during the post-monsoon. The species has a shorter life-span than D. incarnatus, but its irregular occurrence did not allow detailed production estimates. 相似文献

Stressful incidents at work were examined using an open‐ended technique for three different occupations: clerical workers, university professors and sales associates. The study revealed both similarities and differences in stressors and coping techniques reported across occupations. Interpersonal conflict, work overload and time wasters were common across all occupations. Lack of control and work overload were reported as major stressors by the clerical group and interpersonal conflict as a major stressor by the academic and sales groups. A novel self-assembled pure and Mg doped ZnO nano-particles (NPs) were successfully synthesized by a simple low temperature co-precipitation method. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, high resolution scanning electron mi- croscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The results indicated that the prepared photocatalysts showed high crystallinity with a uniform size distribution of the NPs. The degradation of cholorphenols is highly mandatory in today's scenario as they are affecting the environment adversely. Thus, the photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), a potent endocrine disrupting chemical in aqueous medium was investigated by both pure and Mg-doped ZnO NPs under UV-light irradiation in the present study. The influence of the Mg content on the structure, morphology, PL character and photocatalytic activity of ZnO NPs were investigated systematically. Furthermore,the effect of different parameters such as 4-CP concentration, photocatalyst amount, pH and UV-light wavelength on the resulting photocatalytic activity was investigated. 相似文献

Changes during one year in the fauna of two beaches in south India are described in relation to the nutrient content of the water and sand, and the physical changes brought about by the south-west monsoon. At both beaches, the most stable conditions were reached in the pre-monsoon months when the greatest number of species occurred and when there was marked zonation. During the monsoon, erosion took place and only actively migrating species remained to form a permanent element of the beach fauna. The possibility of utilizing hydrochloric acid-based waste pickle liquor (WPL) and medium-grade pyrolusite ore to synthesize
manganese zinc ferrite was explored. The excess acidity of the WPL was neutralized using mild steel turnings. The unreacted
mild steel scrap and suspended solids were removed by filtration. Partial precipitation technique was employed to reduce the
impurities. The purified WPL was treated with medium-grade pyrolusite ore to prepare the leach liquor to which the required
quantities of ferrous chloride and zinc granules were added to maintain stoichiometry in the resultant compound. The hydroxy
carbonate of manganese, zinc and iron was precipitated by the addition of a hot solution (70°C) of sodium carbonate (20% v/v),
which upon sintering in argon atmosphere yielded manganese zinc ferrite. The addition of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) helped
in preventing agglomeration of the particles. Sintering at 450°C for 30 min in argon atmosphere has resulted in mixed phases
of (Zn,Mn,Fe) (Fe,Mn)2O4 and Mn3O4, which indicates lack of phase purity. Sintering at temperatures higher than 950°C for 5 h in argon atmosphere enabled complete
ferritization. The extent of ferritization was found to be a function of sintering time at 950°C. The manganese zinc ferrites
synthesized using WPL and medium-grade pyrolusite ore exhibited soft magnetic characteristics. 相似文献

To understand nonylphenol (NP) contamination in the northeast coastal environment in China, NP was determined in 19 sediment and 20 bivalve samples collected during November 2005. NP was identified in all sediment samples in the range of 8.8 to 1.0 × 10 3 ng/g dw (dry weight), with an average of 0.12 × 10 3 ng/g dw. Most of the bivalve samples (oysters and mussels) contained detectable amounts of NP that ranged from ND (not detected) to 7.6 × 10 3 ng/g dw, with an average value of 0.79 × 10 3 ng/g dw. These results indicated that NP is ubiquitous in sediments and bivalves from the northeast coast of China, and are even present in bivalves sold as seafood. Serious contamination with NP was recorded off the coast of Bohai Strait and in semi-enclosed coastal environment such as Jiaozhou Bay and Liaodong Bay. Pesticides in stream flow from the 142 ha Colworth catchment in Bedfordshire, UK were monitored from October 1999 to December 2000. About 47% of the catchment is tile-drained and different pesticides and cropping patterns have recently been evaluated in terms of their effect on nutrient and pesticide losses to the stream. The data from Colworth were used to test soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) 2000 predictions of pesticide concentrations at the catchment outlet. A sound model set-up to carry out pesticide modelling was created by means of hydrological modelling with proper simulation of crop growth and evapotranspiration. The pesticides terbuthylazine, terbutryn, cyanazine and bentazone were modelled. There was close agreement between SWAT-predicted pesticide concentration values and observations. Scenario trials were conducted to explore management options for reducing pesticide loads arriving at the catchment outlet. The results obtained indicate that SWAT can be used as a tool to understand pesticide behavior at the catchment scale. 相似文献
