Exudation of phlorotannins (polyphenolics) was measured in situ from the sublittoral kelp Ecklonia radiata at two locations near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia during 1992–1993. Minimally disruptive techniques were used in which individual plants were enclosed within clear plastic bags in order to concentrate exudates. Rates of exudation from E. radiata were low relative to most previous studies, with a mean rate (averaged across four seasons and two sites) of 5.5 g g (dry wt)-1 h-1. Exudation was greatest in summer and least in winter at one site, but there were no seasonal differences at a second, more protected site. There was no measurable diurnal variation in exudation rates. Exudation after a period of heavy storms was not significantly different from exudation during calm weather, but severe physical damage to the kelp did increase exudation. Our results suggest that exudation of phlorotannins in temperate Australian waters may be less ecologically important than has been suggested for coastal systems in the Northern Hemisphere. 相似文献

High levels of polyphloroglucinol phenolics in marine brown algae are usually interpreted as a defensive response to herbivory. However, tropical brown algae generally contain very low levels of phenolics, even though herbivory in many tropical systems (e.g. coral reefs) is intense. This apparent paradox would be explained if polyphenolics did not deter tropical herbivores, in which case selection by herbivores for high levels of phenolics in tropical algae would be weak. To examine this hypothesis, in February 1989 we presented mixed assemblages of herbivorous fishes on the Great Barrier Reef with tropical, phenolic-poor brown algae (primarilySargassum spp.) and closely related (conspecifics in one instance) phenolic-rich temperate species. Different species of brown algae were eaten at very different rates, but these differences were not correlated with variation in the phenolic levels among the plants. TLC and NMR analyses showed no evidence of other, non-polar, metabolites in these algae, with the exception of the temperate speciesHomoeostrichus sinclairii. Thus, variation in non-polar metabolites also did not explain the differences in susceptibility to herbivores among these algae. We conclude that the herbivorous fishes studied here were not deterred by phenolic-rich algae, which suggests that levels of phenolics in many tropical algae may generally be low due to their ineffectiveness as defences. An evaluation of pollutants depends on the ecotoxicological quality of the effect tests carried out. In this paper a compilation of aquatic tests is given independently on administration needs. The results are summarized in a table listing fields of application, importance for mathematical modelling and ecological relevance. The table includes 55 tests and 8 attributes characterizing each tests The interpretation of the results listed in this table is hardly feasible. An appropriate tool to rank the tests is the technique ofHasse-diagrams. Using this tool it can be deduced that no test fulfills all demands. There are six tests which are optimal with respect to applicability and mathematical modelling. However, they have no relevance for ecosystems. Many species of marine invertebrate larvae settle and metamorphose in response to chemicals produced by organisms associated
with the adult habitat, and histamine is a cue for larvae of the sea urchin Holopneustes purpurascens. This study investigated the effect of histamine on larval metamorphosis of six sea urchin species. Histamine induced metamorphosis
in larvae of three lecithotrophic species (H. purpurascens, Holopneustes inflatus and Heliocidaris erythrogramma) and in one planktotrophic species (Centrostephanus rodgersii). Direct comparisons of metamorphic rates of lecithotrophic and planktotrophic larvae in assays cannot be made due to different
proportions of larvae being competent. Histamine (10 μM) induced metamorphosis in 95% of larvae of H. purpurascens and H. inflatus after 1 h, while the coralline alga Amphiroa anceps induced metamorphosis in 40–50% of these larvae. Histamine (10 μM) and A. anceps induced 40 and 80% metamorphosis, respectively, in the larvae of H. erythrogramma after 24 h. Histamine (10 μM) and the coralline alga Corallina sp. induced 30 and 70% metamorphosis, respectively, in the larvae of C. rodgersii after 24 h. No metamorphosis of any larval species occurred in seawater controls. Larvae of two planktotrophic species (Tripneustes gratilla and Heliocidaris tuberculata) did not metamorphose in response to histamine. Seagrasses, the host plants of H. inflatus, induced rapid metamorphosis in larvae of the two Holopneustes species, and several algae induced metamorphosis in C. rodgersii larvae. A high performance liquid chromatography method for determination of gas-phase hydrogen peroxide in ambient air using Fenton's chemistry 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A new method for determination of hydrogen peroxide in atmospheric samples is described. Cryogenically collected H2O2 is reacted with sodium salicylate in the presence of Fe(2+) to produce dihydroxybenzoate, which is separated from the reaction mixture by high performance liquid chromatography and detected by UV absorption. Measurements of atmospheric H2O2 were conducted in Las Vegas, NV from June 1999 to December 1999 to evaluate and characterize the method. Measured mixing ratios of H2O2 (there were also non-detects) ranged from 0.012 to 2.74 ppbv, with expected correlations to primary gaseous pollutants and strong seasonal variation consistent with a photochemically derived species. It was concluded that the method is easy to use and has sufficient sensitivity and selectivity to be useful in atmospheric monitoring. 相似文献

In the U.S. rare and endangered species protection is a public policy responsibility commonly ascribed to the federal or state governments. We make three related claims: 1) the scale of local and regional land use control and open-space acquisitions matches the range sizes of many rare, endemic species, 2) land acquisition is the most attractive approach to conserving many rare taxa, especially endangered flora, and 3) at least some local governments and non-governmental organizations have the policy capacity necessary to identify, acquire, and manage critical habitats for endangered species. Although local involvement can have conservation payoffs throughout the United States, we focus on California in general and, in particular, use as a case study the biology and political resources of four adjoining counties in the central coast region of the state: San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, and Monterey. We close with a discussion of policy implications for coordinating local, state, and federal conservation efforts. These include 1) brokering land acquisition deals with input from public land managers and private owners, 2) shifting funding priorities for rare, well-known species away from research to habitat acquisition and management, and 3) encouraging biologists to invest more effort in local land use regulations so that they may make more effective use of local land management and conservation opportunities. 相似文献

Preserving biodiversity over time is a pressing challenge for conservation science. A key goal of marine protected areas (MPAs) is to maintain stability in species composition, via reduced turnover, to support ecosystem function. Yet, this stability is rarely measured directly under different levels of protection. Rather, evaluations of MPA efficacy generally consist of static measures of abundance, species richness, and biomass, and rare measures of turnover are limited to short-term studies involving pairwise (beta diversity) comparisons. Zeta diversity is a recently developed metric of turnover that allows for measurement of compositional similarity across multiple assemblages and thus provides more comprehensive estimates of turnover. We evaluated the effectiveness of MPAs at preserving fish zeta diversity across a network of marine reserves over 10 years in Batemans Marine Park, Australia. Snorkel transect surveys were conducted across multiple replicated and spatially interspersed sites to record fish species occurrence through time. Protection provided by MPAs conferred greater stability in fish species turnover. Marine protected areas had significantly shallower decline in zeta diversity compared with partially protected and unprotected areas. The retention of harvested species was four to six times greater in MPAs compared with partially protected and unprotected areas, and the stabilizing effects of protection were observable within 4 years of park implementation. Conversely, partial protection offered little to no improvement in stability, compared with unprotected areas. These findings support the efficacy of MPAs for preserving temporal fish diversity stability. The implementation of MPAs helps stabilize fish diversity and may, therefore, support biodiversity resilience under ongoing environmental change. 相似文献
