A stream is set apart from all other aquatic ecosystems in that the water is continually entering and leaving the stream and is in almost constant motion. Thus, there is essentially a unidirectional flow, a constant mixing of the watery medium, a continuous erosion of the substrate with concomitant changes in the characteristics of the stream bed, and little or no opportunity for the accumulation and retention of the dissolved nutrients. The physical and chemical characteristics of the stream are largely reflections of the physical and chemical makeup of the watershed. Because of the constant replacement of the water as it flows away, new nutrients must be brought into the stream continually in order to support the biotic communities. The kinds and amounts of nutrients that enter the stream determine, to a large extent, the numbers and kinds of organisms in the different communities. The organisms that comprise those communities may be categorized as representative species indigenous to springs, riffles, and pools. Most plants in streams are sessile whereas most of the animals are vagile, at least during some phase of their life cycle. All sessile organisms must depend on the current bringing their foodstuffs to them, but the vagile forms may seek out their foods in different parts of the stream and may even move from one community to another. Each community is adapted to its particular environment. Spring communities, because of the constancy of the physical and chemical environment, may reach what is essentially a “climax” situation and remain stable over long periods of time. Communities that occupy riffle and pool habitats may change from season to season and from year to year depending on changes in temperature, volume of flow, and the character of the substrate. Between each of these kinds of communities there are transitional areas that may be occupied by wider varieties of organisms than any of the three principal kinds of communities. In any event, the continuity of these communities in time and space is determined by the speed of the current which in turn depends upon the volume of flow. On this basis it becomes evident that the characteristics of the biotic communities are different at the source of a stream than at any other location. Similarly, riffle communities are different than those living in pools. The most difficult evaluation to be made in studying a stream ecosystem is that of the interlocking relationships among the many kinds of organisms. The plants, whatever kind they may be, fix carbon and other elements into organic compounds that can be utilized as food by the animals. The multitude of organisms that make up the bottom fauna of any stream are largely supported by the food formed directly by the plants. Such animals as small crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, turbellarians, mollusks, and the like serve as food for the carnivorous species. To determine the role of each organism in maintaining such a complex structure is a tremendous challenge. Many tools and methods are at the disposal of the biologist who dares to undertake such a project. Still, the greatest of all these is the dedication to spending long hours of tedious and, frequently, very hard work.  相似文献

Fuelled by terrorist attacks on urban areas, emergency planning responses to manmade disasters is a growing area of critical debate within the field of urban management. The response of a major British city--Manchester--to the 1996 bombing of its commercial core, is examined in this paper. It focuses on the transformation of the emergency planning response from dealing with the immediate crisis during the first week, to a stage of controlled recovery that still continues. The response to the devastation caused by the bomb was co-ordinated by the city council, which developed a range of short- and long-term initiatives, but the re-opening of the city centre could not have happened so quickly had the council not worked in collaboration with other key organisations and agencies. Working partnerships were crucial to the immediate response and subsequent recovery, with such capacity for organisational learning built upon existing co-operative arrangements within the city, which had developed over the previous decade.  相似文献

In the 1980 s, a case–control epidemiologic study was conducted in Iowa(USA) to analyze the association between exposure to disinfection by-products(DBPs) and bladder cancer risk. Trihalomethanes(THMs), the most commonly measured and dominant class of DBPs in drinking water, served as a primary metric and surrogate for the full DBP mixture.Average THM exposure was calculated, based on rough estimates of past levels in Iowa. To reduce misclassification, a follow-up study was undertaken to improve estimates of past THM levels and to re-evaluate their association with cancer risk. In addition, the risk associated with haloacetic acids, another class of DBPs, was examined. In the original analysis, surface water treatment plants were assigned one of two possible THM levels depending on the point of chlorination. The re-assessment considered each utility treating surface or groundwater on a case-by-case basis. Multiple treatment/disinfection scenarios and water quality parameters were considered with actual DBP measurements to develop estimates of past levels. The highest annual average THM level in the re-analysis was156 μg/L compared to 74 μg/L for the original analysis. This allowed the analysis of subjects exposed at higher levels( 96 μg/L). The re-analysis established a new approach, based on case studies and an understanding of the water quality and operational parameters that impact DBP formation, for determining historical exposure.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: In the year 2000, as part of the process for setting New Zealand road safety targets, a projection was made for a reduction in social cost of 15.5 percent associated with improvements in crashworthiness, which is a measure of the occupant protection of the light passenger vehicle fleet. Since that document was produced, new estimates of crashworthiness have become available, allowing for a more accurate projection. The objective of this paper is to describe a methodology for projecting changes in casualty rates associated with passive safety features and to apply this methodology to produce a new prediction. METHOD: The shape of the age distribution of the New Zealand light passenger vehicle fleet was projected to 2010. Projected improvements in crashworthiness and associated reductions in social cost were also modeled based on historical trends. These projections of changes in the vehicle fleet age distribution and of improvements in crashworthiness together provided a basis for estimating the future performance of the fleet in terms of secondary safety. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: A large social cost reduction of about 22 percent for 2010 compared to the year 2000 was predicted due to the expected huge impact of improvements in passive vehicle features on road trauma in New Zealand. Countries experiencing improvements in their vehicle fleets can also expect significant reductions in road injury compared to a less crashworthy passenger fleet.
