Summary Iron and steel have been used in India since ancient times (possibly as early as 5000 BC). There are several references to the use of iron and steel in the Vedic literatures. The rust and corrosionfree iron pillar of Qutub Minar in Delhi, built 1500 years ago and the steel girders used in the temples of Orissa around AD 700–1200 still bear the testimony of these early industries. Steels are in great demand today but the large steel plants provide a limited range of steel mostly consumed in building and construction activities. In India, heavy machine tools, locomotives, automobiles, aviation, ship building and engineering tools require super grade steels with various specifications and these are met by mini iron and steel industrial plants. There are approximately 160 such plants mostly situated in big cities and towns. There are several economic and ecological advantages of these mini steel plants. They mostly use iron and steel scrap and other kinds of iron wastes from large industries as their raw material, contrary to the large plants which use iron ores as primary raw materials, the extraction processing and utilization of which involves severe environmental damage by way of deforestation and air and water pollution. Mini steel plants consume much less water and energy. The government of India has given a number of incentives to the mini steel industries by way of exemption from income tax, custom and excise duties, depreciation and investment allowances and rebates on charges for consumption of water and electricity.Dr Rajiv K. Until recently, noise pollution has not been paid adequate attention as air, water and land pollution. In order to assess (predict) the impact of bauxite mine noise on employees health and in and around bauxite mine environment, general noise sources and equipment noise were monitored. All these noise sources were compared with prescribed standard noise levels laid down by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Data has also been compared with reference site, north block hill top which is barren and virgin plateau/top covered with grass only and free from human interference. Equipment noise levels were much higher than the other zone of the mine which does not have the corresponding standards. Rock breaker recorded the highest noise level with 73.1 +/- 14.2 to 89.5 +/- 10.1 dB (A) while from ripper dozer it was least with 61.0 +/- 17.3 to 76.2 +/- 6.2 dB (A). Meteorological parameters did not have much influence upon equipment noise up to 100 feet from the source.  相似文献

Excessive emissions of certain trace gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide and chlorofluorocarbons are likely to result in global warming due to increased concentration of these greenhouse gases (GHGs). Therefore, measures to control GHG emissions are essential and the current international debate is on how to arrive at optimal GHG limitation strategies. To set emission targets or to distribute the burden of costs of various control measures, it is necessary to identify the major emitters. The World Resources Institute has assessed countrywide contributions to global GHG emissions for 1987. This paper disagrees with the basic approach adopted by WRI because it fails to apportion sinks on a logical basis by keeping in mind equity considerations; it does not account for the residence time of different GHGs; and it uses unreliable and outdated data for estimating the emissions. Using recent and reliable data for India and Brazil as well as the IPCC global warming potential for various GHGs, the shares in global emissions have been recalculated. The paper concludes that if only current emissions are considered there is considerable bias against those countries which are latecomers to the process of industrialization.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Drinking of arsenic‐contaminated tubewell water has become a serious health threat in Bangladesh. Arsenic contaminated tubewells are believed to be responsible for poisoning nearly two‐thirds of this country's population. If proper actions are not taken immediately, many people in Bangladesh will die from arsenic poisoning in just a few years. Causes and consequences of arsenic poisoning, the extent of area affected by it, and local knowledge and beliefs about the arsenic problem — including solutions and international responses to the problem — are analyzed. Although no one knows precisely how the arsenic is released into the ground water, several contradictory theories exist to account for its release. Initial symptoms of the poisoning consist of a dryness and throat constriction, difficulty in swallowing, and acute epigastric pain. Long‐term exposure leads to skin, lung, or bladder cancer. Both government and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Bangladesh, foreign governments, and international agencies are now involved in mitigating the effects of the arsenic poisoning, as well as developing cost‐effective remedial measures that are affordable by the rural people.  相似文献

Predictive models for dissolved oxygen deficit have been developed based on an exponential form of expression for the equivalent linear removal of the settleable component of biochemical oxygen demand. These models are more convenient to use than other models because they are applicable for any distance from the outfall and for point and non-point wastewater discharge conditions.  相似文献

Mustang, a mountainous region in the Kali Gandaki River Basin in western Nepal, has been increasingly experiencing climatic changes (e.g., higher temperatures). Rising temperatures lead to ecological shifts, which, in turn, can lead to the expansion of the lower limit for the cultivation of apple trees in this area. Apple cultivation can provide opportunities for adaptations under climate change through vulnerability reduction, income source diversification, livelihood improvement, and capacity building for farmers. As there is a lack of a strong basis to justify the expansion of apple cultivation in Mustang, this study examines the biophysical and socioeconomic suitability of apple cultivation in the area. Necessary data and information were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Findings of biophysical suitability using variable and equal weights to the indicators showed that 5.2 and 4.1 % of the areas are highly suitable for apple cultivation, respectively. However, not all potential farming areas are currently in use. Thus, there is the possibility to expand apple cultivation into unplanted areas and to integrate apple crops with other crops on cultivated lands. Increasing temperature may increase the suitable areas for the cultivation of apples in the coming years. High, benefit–cost ratio for land use confirmed the economic suitability of apple farming when compared to other land uses. The social suitability assessment showed no social discords, conflicts, or disagreements with apple cultivation, which is a positive indicator for the expansion of apple cultivation in western Nepal.  相似文献

The quality restoration of any river, especially of the Yamuna at Mathura, a religious center in India, is a very complex and interdisciplinary endeavor. River pollution cannot be minimized merely by diverting the routes of drains carrying wastewaters and/or establishing sewage treatment plants. The required strategy for pollution control should not only be a multi-line approach but also be fool proof. The various sources of pollution in the Yamuna river and possible strategies to restore this ailing river to its pristine status are presented in this paper.  相似文献

Investigations were undertaken to study the occurrence and progress of nitrification during aerobic digestion of activated sludge in a wide range of initial concentrations of total solids (1000 to 80 000 mg litre(-1), initial pH range of 4.5 to 10.4 and digestion temperature range of 5 degrees to 60 degrees C. Batch aerobic digestion studies on activated sludge grown on wastewater (enriched with organic solids from human excretal material) indicate that almost complete elimination of the 'biodegradable' matter of the activated sludge was one of the essential prerequisites to initiate nitrification. Favourable ranges of temperature and pH for nitrification were observed to be 25 degrees to 30 degrees C and 6.0 to 8.3, respectively. With all favourable conditions, a minimum period of about 2 days was necessary for population build-up of genera Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, and to initiate nitrification. Nitrate formation invariably lagged behind nitrite formation, but under certain conditions both phases of nitrification were observed to progress hand in hand.  相似文献

Monthly collections of the clam Paphia malabarica were made for period of 1 year from May 2002 to April 2003 from Verem, Mandovi estuary, Goa. Clams were categorised into two groups, 25-35 mm (small size) and 35-40 mm (big size). Significant difference was not observed in the accumulation of metals in the whole soft tissue between the two size groups. Irrespective of size, annual mean, metal content recorded as microg/g dry weight in the whole soft tissue was 3.8, 30.3, 13.5, 36.6 and 105.7, respectively, for Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn and Fe. Of the two toxic elements Cd and Pb, Cd content was almost uniform throughout the year except for a rise in September for the small size and October for the big size. Pb, on the other hand, was low from the beginning of the monsoon and exhibited distinct accumulation from December onwards up to April, May and, to some extent, June. The pattern was similar in both the size groups, the values being higher for the bigger size group. The three essential elements Cu, Fe and Zn exhibit trends similar to one another with peaks in September and December-January in both the size groups. Cadmium accumulation was highest in the mantle and adductor muscle, Lead, in foot, Copper, in digestive gland and gonad, and Zn and Fe, in gills. Correlation coefficient between different metal couplings as tested statistically revealed significant coupling for Zn-Fe (r 0.92) in the bigger size group, the same was observed between Cu-Fe (r 0.62) and Cd-Zn (r 0.94). Seasonal difference in Pb accumulation was highly significant.  相似文献
