The papers in this Special Issue are the primary technical underpinnings for the Northeast Climate Impacts Assessment (NECIA), an integrated regional-scale assessment of projected climate change, impacts and options for mitigation and adaptation across the US Northeast. The consequences of future pathways of greenhouse gas emissions on projected climate and impacts across climate-sensitive sectors is assessed by using downscaled projections from three global climate models under both higher (Alfi) and lower (B1) emissions scenarios. The findings illustrate that near-term reductions in emissions can greatly reduce the extent and severity of regionally important impacts on natural and managed ecosystems and public health in the latter half of this century, and increase the feasibility that those impacts which are now unavoidable can be successfully managed through adaptation.  相似文献

The function of the conspicuous pre-roost gathering in communally roosting birds is poorly known. We studied movement and social cohesion of radio-tagged hooded crows (Corvus corone cornix) from their daytime location via pre-roost to roost in autumn and winter. With increasing snowfall the previous 24 h, the crows attended pre-roosts farther from the territory, and moved longer from pre-roost to roost. The crows became more likely to roost communally as distance to their territory increased. Attending a pre-roost on average almost doubled the travel distance to a communal roost. Crows were much more likely to join the same roost when they had attended the same pre-roost than otherwise. Breeding mates were more likely to keep together from pre-roost to roost than were other assigned pairs of a territorial male and female. For assigned pairs of non-mates, cohesion from pre-roost to roost decreased with increasing distance to roost, and was higher when both crows roosted communally compared to when at least one of them roosted in its territory. When both roosted communally, cohesion decreased with increasing snowfall and increasing number of crows attending the pre-roost, increased with increasing snow depth, and became higher among two females, compared to other combinations of two crows, with increasing number of crows attending the pre-roost. The effect of irradiance, prey concentration and pH on the growth and grazing responses of the mixotrophic prymnesiophyte Chrysochromulina ericina under N-and P-replete conditions was studied using the pedinophyte Marsupiomonas pelliculata as prey. The two organisms were inoculated in monocultures and in mixed cultures at different predator: prey ratios at three irradiances and allowed to grow for 4–7 days. All cultures were non-axenic. Algal densities and pH were monitored throughout the experiments and growth and grazing rates were measured. An increase in growth of C. ericina cultures at irradiances of 25 and 70 μmol photons m−2 s−1 was observed after the addition of prey, while growth of C. ericina cultures at the high irradiance (150 μmol photons m−2 s−1) was unaffected by the addition of prey. However, although the growth of C. ericina increased at low irradiance (25 μmol photons m−2 s−1), it did not reach the same level as monocultures at the high irradiance (150 μmol photons m−2 s−1), suggesting that phagotrophy can only partly replace photosynthesis in C. ericina. Maximum growth rates of C. ericina at irradiances of 25 and 70 μmol photons m−2 s−1 were obtained at concentrations of > 0.15–0.3×105 M. pelliculata ml−1, corresponding to 50–100 μg C 1−1. Ingestion of M. pelliculata cells by C. ericina did not generally follow Michaelis—Menten kinetics. Deviation from the expected saturation kinetics was especially pronounced at irradiances of 70 and 150 μmol photons m−2 s−1. At these irradiances ingestion of M. pelliculata cells by C. ericina decreased at high concentrations of M. pelliculata, indicating an increased uptake of bacterial prey in these cultures. The growth rate of C. ericina was affected in both monocultures and in mixed cultures when pH increased above 8.6, and growth stopped around pH 9. The prey alga M. pelliculata tolerated high pH better and, consequently, took over in the mixed cultures when pH exceeded 9. Summary. Vole feeding amongst herbal willows that have a high concentration of salicylates in their bark and leaves, and may therefore be cultivated for use as raw material for herbal medicine was tested in the field and in laboratory conditions. Eight clones of dark-leaved willow (Salix myrsinifolia Salisb.) were cultivated for two years with six different methods combining three fertilisation levels (none, low and high), black plastic mulch applied for suppressing weed competition and unmulched control. Samples for the laboratory feeding trial were taken from the unfertilised plants during willow winter dormancy and twigs were fed to 16 voles as a multi-choice experiment. The bark area removed was calculated from image analysis of the material left by the voles. The diameter and the bark thickness of the twigs were measured. Concentrations of salicin, salicortin, HCH-salicortin, picein, triandrin, triandrin derivative, gallocatechin, (+)-catechin, luteolin-7-glucoside, hyperin, total condensed tannins and total nitrogen were measured from the twigs fed to voles in the laboratory. Browsing by a natural population of voles amongst winter-dormant willows was measured in the field. In the laboratory, voles browsed on 80% of the twigs and in the field voles browsed on 33% of the twigs. Vole feeding followed similar patterns in the field and in the laboratory experiment; feeding was clearly higher amongst the plants grown in unmulched control compared to those in plastic mulch. The same clones, 1, 2 and 6 were preferred in both experiments. Voles preferred thin twigs to thick ones. Feeding correlated negatively with concentrations of salicylates and tannins. As vole feeding seems to be highly affected by willow cultivation method and plant genotype, careful selection of cultivated clones and cultivation methods can enhance the reliability of herbal willow cultivation.  相似文献

The sources and reservoirs of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDF) in the city of Hamburg, Germany, in the year 1992 were identified and quantified combining analytical data of PCDD/PCDF with statistical data on annual fluxes of materials and products. Fluxes and amounts of PCDD/PCDF were estimated for the environmental compartments water, air, and soil. Dioxin emissions originating from industrial, commercial or private activities were also calculated. Together with the analysis of the specific regional nutrition data, the human exposurevia the various pathways could be determined. It could be shown that the total PCDD/PCDF intake of individuals in Hamburg was about the same as the national average. High annual fluxes of PCDD/PCDF connected with the trade of industrial products and the waste management and disposal: system in Hamburg obviously had no influence on the human intake of PCDD/PCDF.  相似文献

It has been suggested that polyterritoriality in birds, i.e. mated males defending two spatially separated territories, deceives females into accepting polygyny against their best interest. Mated males singing on secondary territories should make it difficult for new arriving females to assess the mating status of unmated and mated males advertising to females. However, there have been objections to the deception hypothesis, suggesting that differences in territorial behavior between males of different mating status may make correct assessment possible. Polyterritorial males frequently leave their secondary territory to visit the female in the primary territory, thereby revealing their mating status to females in search of mates. The aim of this study is to investigate how reliable behavioral cues are in assessing the mating status of males in polyterritorial wood warblers. Our study shows that singing activity of mated males on secondary territories and unmated males was similar in the morning, while there was a significant difference in the afternoon. Unmated males spent, on average, more time on their territories than mated males spent on their secondary territories. However, there was considerable variation in both unmated and mated males in the frequency in which they left their territories. For instance, unmated males left their territories quite frequently early in the season compared to later. Hence, females must be able to interpret singing behavior and a male leaving his territory differently depending on time of the season and time of the day in order to correctly assess the mating status of advertising males. Estimating the increase in probability of finding an unmated male by using behavioral cues showed that females could increase the probability of finding an unmated male compared to random choice with respect to mating status. The uncertainty was, however, still considerable. The most important factor affecting the probability of finding an unmated male was the proportion of mated males on secondary territories compared to unmated males. Our study suggests that presence on a territory is not a reliable cue for the assessment of male mating status in polyterritorial wood warblers.  相似文献

Sorption to mineral surfaces may be important for retention and degradation of hydrophobic pesticides in subsoils and aquifers poor in organic matter. In this work the title pyrethroids have been used to investigate selective interactions with the surfaces of four minerals. Sorption of the four pyrethroids was quantified in batch experiments with initial pyrethroid concentrations of 1–100 μg/l. Sorption to centrifuge tubes used in the batch experiments accounted for 25–60% of total sorption. Net sorption was obtained from total sorption after subtracting the amounts of pyrethroids sorbed to centrifuge tubes used. All isotherms could be fitted by the Freundlich equation with n ranging between 0.9 and 1.1. Bonding affinities per unit surface area decreased in the order: corundum>quartz>montmorillonitekaolinite. A similar sequence as found for the total surface tension of the minerals. All minerals showed the same selectivity order with respect to sorption affinity of the four pyrethroids: lambda-cyhalothrin>deltamethrin>cypermethrin>fenvalerate, which shows that the most hydrophobic compound is sorbed most strongly. Stereochemical properties of the four pyrethroid formulations may also contribute to the selectivity pattern.  相似文献

Measurements of nitrogen dioxide using the Palmes diffusion tubes in Uummannaq, Aasiaat, and Nuuk. all located along the west-coast of Greenland, have demonstrated that the levels of pollution at the most heavily impacted sites are comparable to levels in much larger towns in Denmark. The highest concentrations were, in general, observed near sites influenced by car traffic (peak concentrations of up to 16 ppbv), medium concentrations were observed in the residential areas (2 6 ppbv), and very low levels were found at the background locations in the town outskirts (1-2 ppbv). Observations of nitrogen dioxide concentrations less than 0.1 ppbv at a remote site, Akia, 25 km from Nuuk, indicate that, compared to local sources, long-range transport of nitrogen dioxide is not important in western Greenland.  相似文献
