Ecosystems with alternative stable states (ASS) may shift discontinuously from one stable state to another as environmental parameters cross a threshold. Reversal can then be difficult due to hysteresis effects. This contrasts with continuous state changes in response to changing environmental parameters, which are less difficult to reverse. Worldwide degradation of coral reefs, involving "phase shifts" from coral to algal dominance, highlights the pressing need to determine the likelihood of discontinuous phase shifts in coral reefs, in contrast to continuous shifts with no ASS. However, there is little evidence either for or against the existence of ASS for coral reefs. We use dynamic models to investigate the likelihood of continuous and discontinuous phase shifts in coral reefs subject to sustained environmental perturbation by fishing, nutrification, and sedimentation. Our modeling results suggest that coral reefs with or without anthropogenic stress can exhibit ASS, such that discontinuous phase shifts can occur. We also find evidence to support the view that high macroalgal growth rates and low grazing rates on macroalgae favor ASS in coral reefs. Further, our results suggest that the three stressors studied, either alone or in combination, can increase the likelihood of both continuous and discontinuous phase shifts by altering the competitive balance between corals and algae. However, in contrast to continuous phase shifts, we find that discontinuous shifts occur only in model coral reefs with parameter values near the extremes of their empirically determined ranges. This suggests that continuous shifts are more likely than discontinuous shifts in coral reefs. Our results also suggest that, for ecosystems in general, tackling multiple human stressors simultaneously maximizes resilience to phase shifts, ASS, and hysteresis, leading to improvements in ecosystem health and functioning. 相似文献

Nitric oxide(NO) is one of the most important air pollutants in atmosphere mainly emitted from combustion source. A biotrickling filter was designed and operated to remove NO from an air stream using bacteria extracted from the sewage sludge of a municipal sewage treatment plant. To obtain the best operation conditions for the biotrickling filter, orthogonal experiments(L9(34)) were designed. Inlet oxygen concentration was found to be the most significant factor of the biotrickling filter and has a significant negative effect on the system. The optimal conditions of the biotrickling filter occurred at a temperature of 40℃, a pH of 8.0 and a chemical oxygen demand of 165 mg/L in the recycled water with no oxygen in the system. The bacteria sample was detected by DNA sequencing technology and showed 93%–98% similarity to Pseudomonas mendocina. Moreover, a full gene sequencing results indicated the bacterium was a brand new strain and named as P. mendocina DLHK. This strain can transfer nitrate to organic nitrogen. The result suggested the assimilation nitrogen process in this system. Through the isotope experimental analysis, two intermediate products(15NO and 15N2O) were found. Abstract Radiolabelled end‐use mixtures of glyphosate with and without a cationic surfactant (Ethomeen® T/25) and an organosilicone surfactant (Silwet® L‐77) were applied onto trembling aspen (Populus tremuloids Michx.) leaves at the rate of 1.0 kg of AE (acid equivalent) in 35 L/ha area of foliage. A 5‐mm rainfall with an intensity of 10 mm/h was applied at intervals of 0.5, 8, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 96 h after treatment. Glyphosate washoff was determined by liquid scintillation counting of radioactivity in the rain‐washing. At 36 h post‐treatment, both the adjuvants significantly reduced glyphosate washoff (Ethomeen by 69.6% and Silwet by 59.7%) from foliage, compared to the washoff (82.6%) when Vision alone was applied without the adjuvants. Results on the rate of plant growth indicated that with a rain‐free period of 8 h or more, the growth of most seedlings was stunted within 1 or 2 d. Percentage of foliar browning 20 d after treatment with rain‐free period of 8 to 48 h ranged from 8 to 80% for Vision alone, 75 to 100% for Vision with Ethomeen, and 85 to 100% for Vision with Silwet, respectively. Physical properties of the end‐use mixtures were measured with and without the two adjuvants to examine droplet spreading and drying rates in relation glyphosate rainfastness. The Silwet adjuvant lowered the surface tension of the end‐use mixture, but Ethomeen did not. Droplets containing Silwet were spread more than those containing Ethomeen. However, the greater area of contact caused by Silwet did not contribute to a significant increase in the translocation rate of glyphosate into untreated parts of the seedlings, and showed no relationship with rainfastness of glyphosate deposits on trembling aspen. 相似文献

Abstract The influence of liquid properties on spray atomization and deposition characteristics was studied using two oils of different viscosities and volatilities. For a given volume of oil sprayed, insecticide diluent 585 (ID 585), a petroleum distillate of low viscosity and high volatility, provided numerous small droplets on Kromekote® cards. However, volume of oil deposited was low. For the same volume of oil sprayed, Sun‐spray® 6N, a non‐volatile paraffinic oil of high viscosity provided fewer but larger droplets, and consequently, the volume of oil deposited was much higher on the cards.
