Thermal treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) has become a common practice in waste volume reduction and resource recovery. For the utilization of molten slag for construction materials and metal recovery, it is important to understand the behavior of heavy metals in the melting process. In this study, the correlation between the contents of elements in feed materials and MSW molten slag and their distributions in the ash melting process, including metal residues, are investigated. The hazardous metal contents in the molten slag were significantly related to the contents of metals in the feed materials. Therefore, the separation of products containing these metals in waste materials could be an effective means of producing environmentally safe molten slag with a low hazardous metals content. The distribution ratios of elements in the ash melting process were also determined. The elements Zn and Pb were found to have a distribution ratio of over 60% in fly ash from the melting furnace and the contents of these metals were also high; therefore, Zn and Pb could be potential target metals for recycling from fly ash from the melting furnace. Meanwhile, Cu, Ni, Mo, Sn, and Sb were found to have distribution ratios of over 60% in the metal residue. Therefore, metal residue could be a good resource for these metals, as the contents of Cu, Ni, Mo, Sn, and Sb in metal residue are higher than those in other output materials. 相似文献

It is required to replace the aluminum fluoride coating, which is a popular lubricant for aluminum alloy cold forging in Japan, with environmentally friendly lubricants, because the aluminum fluoride coating has high environmental risks and needs much expense. Evaluations of lubrication performance are necessary before lubricant replacement. The authors proposed new friction test based on combined forward spline-backward can extrusion. It can realize large surface expansion, which is a characteristic of aluminum cold forging. In the present paper, a double-layer-type environmentally friendly solid lubricant film and the aluminum fluoride coating were applied to a precipitation hardened aluminum alloy. The lubrication performance was evaluated by the friction test. The double-layer-type lubricant showed superior performance enough for the replacement. The effect of surface treatment applied to workpiece on the lubrication performance was also investigated. Buckwheat tea waste (BWTW) and barley tea waste (BTW), by-products of the beverage industry, are alternative carbohydrate sources for ethanol production. In this study, optimal enzyme loading for enzymatic saccharification of BWTW and BTW was determined, and simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) was performed by Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Mucor indicus to produce ethanol. Optimal enzyme loading for enzymatic saccharification of 2?% w/v BWTW and BTW was 0.5?% (weight of enzyme/weight of tea wastes) for BWTW and 0.1?% for BTW. Ethanol production from BWTW by S. cerevisiae and M. indicus after 48?h of SSF was 49.9/100?g of BWTW and 47.9/100?g of BWTW, respectively, with 0.5?% enzyme loading. Ethanol production from BTW by S. cerevisiae and M. indicus after 48?h of SSF was 20.5/100?g of BTW and 21.6/100?g of BTW, corresponding to 62 and 66?% of the theoretical yield based on starch content, respectively, with 0.1?% of enzyme loading. Furthermore, S. cerevisiae produced 76?% of the theoretical yield based on the total glucose from starch in BWTW and BTW when a mixture of BWTW and BTW was used as a substrate, with 0.2?% enzyme loading and no additional nitrogen or mineral sources. 相似文献

Europe has a long history of human pressure on freshwater ecosystems. As pressure continues to grow and new threats emerge, there is an urgent need for conservation of freshwater biodiversity and its ecosystem services. However, whilst some taxonomic groups, mainly vertebrates, have received a disproportionate amount of attention and funds, other groups remain largely off the public and scientific radar. Freshwater mussels (Bivalvia, Unionida) are an alarming example of this conservation bias and here we point out six conceptual areas that need immediate and long-term attention: knowledge, threats, socioeconomics, conservation, governance and education. The proposed roadmap aims to advance research, policy and education by identifying the most pressing priorities for the short- and long-term conservation of freshwater mussels across Europe. 相似文献

Boom and bust dynamics are a prominent characteristic of the crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) populations. Outbreaking starfish populations damage coral communities extensively and then often disappear quickly. In contrast, Onna village, on the central west coast of Okinawa Island, Japan, has been experiencing chronically high population densities of A. planci for decades. In this study, we examined spatial and temporal population dynamics of A. planci along the coast of Onna village, using removal data gathered over 24 years by a local fisheries cooperative. The results demonstrate that A. planci populations along the Onna coast often experienced high densities prior to 2003 and that recently, populations have again been increasing drastically. Size-frequency distributions suggest multiple, successive recruitment, as one of the driving factors maintaining A. planci populations in this location. Moreover, within the Onna area, the timing of outbreak peaks varied among different locations, showing a northward progression. 相似文献

In cultures of Alaria crassifolia Kjellman, unfertilized eggs developed normally into haploid sporophytes which differentiated into a holdfast, stipe and blade with a midrib. The terminal cells of a male gametophyte grew apogamously into haploid sporophytes with narrow blades which lack the midrib. Further, diploid gametophytes were formed by apospory from vegetative cells of a diploid sporophyte. They were monoecious and their fertilized eggs developed into tetraploid sporophytes. The diffusion pathways of porous sandstone were examined by a three-dimensional (3-D) imaging technique based on X-ray computed tomography (CT) using the SPring-8 (Super Photon ring-8 GeV, Hyogo, Japan) synchrotron radiation facility. The analysis was undertaken to develop better understanding of the diffusion pathways in natural rock as a key factor in clarifying the detailed mechanism of the diffusion of radionuclides and water molecules through the pore spaces of natural barriers in underground nuclear waste disposal facilities. A cylindrical sample (diameter 4 mm, length 6 mm) of sandstone (porosity 0.14) was imaged to obtain a 3-D image set of 450(3) voxels=2.62(3) mm(3). Through cluster-labeling analysis of the 3-D image set, it was revealed that 89% of the pore space forms a single large pore-cluster responsible for macroscopic diffusive transport, while only 11% of the pore space is made up of isolated pores that are not involved in long-range diffusive transport. Computer simulations of the 3-D diffusion of non-sorbing random walkers in the largest pore cluster were performed to calculate the surface-to-volume ratio of the pore, tortuosity (diffusion coefficient in free space divided by that in porous rock). The results showed that (i) the simulated surface-to-volume ratio is about 60% of the results obtained by conventional pulsed-field-gradient proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) laboratory experiments and (ii) the simulated tortuosity is five to seven times larger than the results of laboratory diffusion experiments using non-sorbing I(-) and Br(-). These discrepancies are probably attributed to the intrinsic sample heterogeneity and limited spatial resolution of the CT system. The permeability was also estimated based on the NMR diffusometry theory using the results of the random walk simulations via the Kozeny-Carman equation. The estimated permeability involved an error of about 20% compared with the permeability measured by the conventional method, suggesting that the diffusometry-based NMR well logging with gradient coils is applicable to the in-situ permeability measurement of strata. The present study demonstrated that X-ray CT using synchrotron radiation is a powerful tool for obtaining 3-D pore structure images without the beam-hardening artifacts inevitable in conventional CT using X-ray tubes. 相似文献

Accumulation of bacterial cells on a transparent electrode was controlled by applying an alternating potential. Live and
dead cells on a transparent electrode can be distinguished as blue and red cells, by staining with two fluorescent dyes, propidium
iodide (PI) and 4′, 6-diamidino- 2-phenylindole dihydrochloride (DAPI) and propidium iodide (PI), respectively. Cells of
the gram-negative marine bacterium, Vibrio alginolyticus attached to an indium/tin oxide (ITO) electrode were killed by applying a potential of 1.1 V versus saturated calomel electrode
in seawater. By applying –0.4 V, 73% of the cells on the ITO electrode were desorbed in 10 min. Changes in pH and generation
of chlorine were not observed after applying potentials in the range of –0.4∼1.2 V. After 21 h of immersion in V. alginolyticus cell suspension with the application of an alternating potential of 1.1 and –0.4 V, cells on the electrode were completely
killed and the cell number decreased to 20% of that of no potential. Elution of indium and tin was not observed after 10 days

In order to quantify the sources of chemical pollutants in the leachate from reclaimed wastes, chemical substances in 11 different types of industrial wastes were identified. Their elution behaviors were also investigated. Alkanes (5.3-890 ng g(-1)), benzenes (8.1-110 ng g(-1)), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (3.2-560 ng g(-1)), alcohols, steroids, phenol (7.1 ng g(-1)), ketones, furans (190-210 ng g(-1)), phthalates (8.9-560 ng g(-1)), benzoquinones, dibenzothiophene (190 ng g(-1)), benthiocarb (4.2 ng g(-1)), sulfur, nitrile compounds, amino compounds, amido compounds, pyridines, quinolines (1.8-15 ng g(-1)), isoquinolines, carbazoles, acridines, chlordenes (1.5-1.6 ng g(-1)) and nonachlors (1.1-1.6 ng g(-1)) were detected in 9 types of industrial wastes. The chemical substances detected in waste at the highest concentrations were alkanes, PAHs and phthalates. Water supply sludge, dust and brick garbage contained many kinds of chemical substances. The elution behaviors of specific chemical substances, COD and nutrients varied by characteristic and production process of each waste. Over 100 different compounds were detected in pyrolysis products including carbohydrate, carotynoid, amino acids, proteins, humic acids, lignin and combustion products. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: To observe the relationship between the PCDD/F and Co-PCB levels in samples of human breast milk and nearby waste incinerators in Tokyo, Japan. METHODS: Breast milk was taken from 240 mothers residing in Tokyo, Japan to measure and analyze the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs; 14 congeners), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs; 15 congeners), and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs; 12 congeners) contained in the fat. Individual milk samples (about 50 ml) were obtained from the mothers 30 days after delivery, between the months of June and September in 1999 and 2000. A map of Tokyo was used to measure the distances between each mother's place of residence and the closest public and industrial waste incinerators. RESULTS: The distances to the nearest waste incinerators bore no apparent correlations with the congeners of PCDD/Fs and Co-PCBs. The distances were also uncorrelated with the mean toxic equivalent quantities (TEQs) of PCDD/Fs (the sum of PCDDs and PCDFs), Co-PCBs, and the total PCDD/Fs and Co-PCBs. CONCLUSIONS: Although waste incinerators were the largest source of dioxins in Japan at the time of the study, the dioxins levels of mother's milk bore no apparent relationships with the distances between the mothers' domiciles and the nearest waste incinerators. In this study, several meaningful factors were not taken into account, namely, the wind direction, the level of dioxin emitted from each incinerator, the level of environmental pollution of dioxins, and the average time the mothers stayed at home each day. A full understanding of these points awaits future studies. 相似文献
