In an effort to increase conservation effectiveness through the use of Earth observation technologies, a group of remote sensing scientists affiliated with government and academic institutions and conservation organizations identified 10 questions in conservation for which the potential to be answered would be greatly increased by use of remotely sensed data and analyses of those data. Our goals were to increase conservation practitioners’ use of remote sensing to support their work, increase collaboration between the conservation science and remote sensing communities, identify and develop new and innovative uses of remote sensing for advancing conservation science, provide guidance to space agencies on how future satellite missions can support conservation science, and generate support from the public and private sector in the use of remote sensing data to address the 10 conservation questions. We identified a broad initial list of questions on the basis of an email chain‐referral survey. We then used a workshop‐based iterative and collaborative approach to whittle the list down to these final questions (which represent 10 major themes in conservation): How can global Earth observation data be used to model species distributions and abundances? How can remote sensing improve the understanding of animal movements? How can remotely sensed ecosystem variables be used to understand, monitor, and predict ecosystem response and resilience to multiple stressors? How can remote sensing be used to monitor the effects of climate on ecosystems? How can near real‐time ecosystem monitoring catalyze threat reduction, governance and regulation compliance, and resource management decisions? How can remote sensing inform configuration of protected area networks at spatial extents relevant to populations of target species and ecosystem services? How can remote sensing‐derived products be used to value and monitor changes in ecosystem services? How can remote sensing be used to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of conservation efforts? How does the expansion and intensification of agriculture and aquaculture alter ecosystems and the services they provide? A eutrophication assessment method was developed as part of the National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment (NEEA) Program.
The program is designed to improve monitoring and assessment of eutrophication in the estuaries and coastal bays of the United
States with the intent to guide management plans and develop analytical and research models and tools for managers. These
tools will help guide and improve management success for estuaries and coastal resources. The assessment method, a Pressure-State-Response
approach, uses a simple model to determine Pressure and statistical criteria for indicator variables (where applicable) to
determine State. The Response determination is mostly heuristic, although research models are being developed to improve that
component. The three components are determined individually and then combined into a single rating. Application to several
systems in the European Union (E.U.), specifically in Portugal, shows that the method is transferable, and thus is useful
for development of management measures in both the Unites States and E.U. This approach identifies and quantifies the key
anthropogenic nutrient input sources to estuaries so that management measures can target inputs for maximum effect. Because
nitrogen is often the limiting nutrient in estuarine systems, examples of source identification and quantification for nitrogen
have been developed for 11 coastal watersheds on the U.S. east coast using the WATERSN model. In general, estuaries in the
Northeastern United States receive most of their nitrogen from human sewage, followed by atmospheric deposition. This is in
contrast to some watersheds in the Mid-Atlantic (Chesapeake Bay) and South Atlantic (Pamlico Sound), which receive most of
their nitrogen from agricultural runoff. Source identification is important for implementing effective management measures
that should be monitored for success using assessment methods, as described herein. For instance, these results suggest that
Northeastern estuaries would likely benefit most from improved sewage treatment, where as the Mid and South Atlantic systems

This paper examines predictors of vegetative cover on private lands in Baltimore, Maryland. Using high-resolution spatial
data, we generated two measures: “possible stewardship,” which is the proportion of private land that does not have built
structures on it and hence has the possibility of supporting vegetation, and “realized stewardship,” which is the proportion
of possible stewardship land upon which vegetation is growing. These measures were calculated at the parcel level and averaged
by US Census block group. Realized stewardship was further defined by proportion of tree canopy and grass. Expenditures on
yard supplies and services, available by block group, were used to help understand where vegetation condition appears to be
the result of current activity, past legacies, or abandonment. PRIZM™ market segmentation data were tested as categorical
predictors of possible and realized stewardship and yard expenditures. PRIZM™ segmentations are hierarchically clustered into
5, 15, and 62 categories, which correspond to population density, social stratification (income and education), and lifestyle
clusters, respectively. We found that PRIZM 15 best predicted variation in possible stewardship and PRIZM 62 best predicted
variation in realized stewardship. These results were further analyzed by regressing each dependent variable against a set
of continuous variables reflective of each of the three PRIZM groupings. Housing age, vacancy, and population density were
found to be critical determinants of both stewardship metrics. A number of lifestyle factors, such as average family size,
marriage rates, and percentage of single-family detached homes, were strongly related to realized stewardship. The percentage

Urban stream restoration continues to be used as an ecological management tool, despite uncertainty about the long‐term sustainability and resilience of restored systems. Evaluations of restoration success often focus on specific instream indicators, with limited attention to the wider basin or parallel hydrologic and geomorphic process. A comprehensive understanding of urban stream restoration progress is particularly important for comparisons with nonurban sites as urban streams can provide substantial secondary benefits to urban residents. Here, we utilize a wide range of indicators to retrospectively examine the restoration of Nine Mile Run, a multi‐million dollar stream restoration project in eastern Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania, USA). Examination of available continuous hydrological data illustrates the high cost of failures to incorporate the data into planning and adaptive management. For example, persistent extreme flows drive geomorphic degradation threatening to reverse hydrologic connections created by the restoration and impact the improved instream biotic communities. In addition, human activities associated with restoration efforts suggest a positive feedback as the stream restoration has focused effort on the basin beyond the reach. Ultimately, urban stream restoration remains a potentially useful management tool, but continued improvements in post‐project assessment should include examination of a wider range of indicators. 相似文献

Alfalfa is the major forage crop produced in temperate regions worlwide. Although this crop is currently used mainly for producing high-value livestock feed, its application for bioenergy production is a recent focus of interest. Even though it is not mandatory, alfalfa is normally dried in order to improve the quality of the final product. In this study, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was used to quantify the environmental impacts linked to alfalfa production in the major cultivation zone in Spain (Ebro Valley), including field activities, dehydration and transport to farms for livestock feeding. In addition, the identification of the most relevant processes contributing to the environmental impact and the potential improvements actions were also defined as objectives. Inventory data were obtained mainly from interviews with farmers complemented with published literature and comments from experts.LCA results were obtained for global warming, acidification, eutrophication, photochemical oxidant formation, land use, non-renewable cumulative energy demand and human, terrestrial and aquatic ecotoxicities. Within the life cycle of alfalfa, the dehydration process, production of phosphate fertilizer, application of nitrogen fertilizers and pesticides, water consumption and final transport to the consumer (by road and ship) were identified as hot spots. Based on these, some improvement measures were proposed and evaluated: (i) reduction of the moisture content of alfalfa and the use of a higher percentage of biomass for combustion in the dehydration process, (ii) no application of nitrogen fertilizer in maintenance years and (iii) use of more efficient trucks for transport. Their implementation would produce significant reduction of eutrophication, global warming, acidification, non-renewable cumulative energy demand and, to a lesser extent, photochemical oxidation formation and human toxicity impacts. 相似文献
