In the 1920s, Otto Warburg reported a striking metabolic shift in solid tumors: contrary to their normal counter parts, which exhibited a nearly pure respiratory metabolism, where cancer cells relied strongly on lactic fermentation for energy production, even in the presence of ample oxygen. This metabolic shift, later named the Warburg effect, is now viewed as a nearly universal cancer phenotype. To investigate whether it is operating in hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))-induced carcinogenesis, PC-12 cells were exposed to low Cr(VI) concentrations and effects determined on the rates of glucose uptake, lactate production and oxygen consumption, critical indicators of the type of energy metabolism adopted by the cells. Further, the influence on the cells’ energy charge, an important parameter in the evaluation of the cellular physiological state was assessed. In the presence of ample oxygen, concentration-dependent, statistically significant decreases in the energy charge were detected, which were accompanied by an increased glucose uptake rate. This enhanced uptake may constitute the first step in a compensatory mechanism aimed at counteracting the decrease in energy charge. Although these changes may be too small to exert an impact in the cellular functions, they may provide insight into the initial steps of Cr(VI)-induced carcinogenesis. 相似文献
Previous environmental biomonitoring studies indicated higher environmental lead (Pb) pollution levels at the districts of
Aveiro and Leiria (Portugal). In evaluating the risk for human health, which is associated with contaminated soils after oral
uptake, total soil concentrations have generally been held against criteria established from toxicological studies based upon
the assumption that the uptake of the contaminant is similar in the toxicological studies and from the soils assessed. This
assumption is not always valid, as most toxicological studies are carried out with soluble forms of the contaminants, whereas
many soil contaminants are or become embedded in the soil matrix and thus exhibit limited availability. This study intends
to estimate the soluble fraction of Pb in the soils from central Portugal, and to assess the bioaccessibility of Pb and, hence,
infer exposure and risk for human health. Yet, as the physical–chemical properties of the soil exert some control over the
solubility of Pb in the surface environment, the relation between such soil properties and the estimated soluble and/or bioaccessible
fractions of Pb is also investigated. Other objective, with a more practical nature, was to give some contribution to find
a suitable in vitro mimetic of the gastrointestinal tract environment. The results indicate relatively low total metal concentrations
in the soils, even if differences between regions were observed. The Aveiro district has the higher total Pb concentration
and the metal is in more soluble forms, that is, geoavailable. Soils with higher concentrations of soluble Pb show higher
estimates of bioaccessible Pb. Soil pH seems to influence human bioaccessibility of Pb. 相似文献
EIA has been instituted in developing countries in the last decade largely in response to outside pressures. Governments have been quick to initiate reforms rather than jeopardize projects that might be key to national development plans. At the subnational level, most projects are not financed by foreign aid. The application of EIA at this level is often the result of pressure exerted on policy elites by the bureaucracy. This paper describes the reorganization of environmental protection agencies in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. This reorganization provided the setting for a bureaucratic initiative on EIA. The authors also analyze two cases in which EIA was applied unsatisfactorily and comment on the political realites of implementing EIA at the subnational level. 相似文献
The atmospheric transport of biomass burning emissions in the South American and African continents is being monitored annually using a numerical simulation of air mass motions; we use a tracer transport capability developed within RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) coupled to an emission model. Mass conservation equations are solved for carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate material (PM2.5). Source emissions of trace gases and particles associated with biomass burning activities in tropical forest, savanna and pasture have been parameterized and introduced into the model. The sources are distributed spatially and temporally and assimilated daily using the biomass burning locations detected by remote sensing. Advection effects (at grid scale) and turbulent transport (at sub-grid scale) are provided by the RAMS parameterizations. A sub-grid transport parameterization associated with moist deep and shallow convection, not explicitly resolved by the model due to its low spatial resolution, has also been introduced. Sinks associated with the process of wet and dry removal of aerosol particles and chemical transformation of gases are parameterized and introduced in the mass conservation equation. An operational system has been implemented which produces daily 48-h numerical simulations (including 24-h forecasts) of CO and PM2.5, in addition to traditional meteorological fields. The good prediction skills of the model are demonstrated by comparisons with time series of PM2.5 measured at the surface. 相似文献
The management of urban trees generates wood wastes that are commonly destined for use as firewood or compost. However, they can be used for more noble purposes such as making furniture or small wooden objects. This study aimed to investigate the drying and the shrinkage of the wood of seven typical urban afforestation species to determine the possibility of high-valued alternative use(s). Samples of these species (Cenostigma pluviosum (DC.) E. Gagnon & G.P. Lewis.; Delonix regia (Bojer ex Hook.) Raf.; Ficus benjamina L.; Licania tomentosa (Benth.) Fritsch; Nectandra megapotamica (Spreng.) Mez; Terminalia catappa L.; and Tipuana tipu (Benth.) Kuntze) underwent a drastic drying test in a laboratory oven at 103?±?2 °C, followed by weighing on an analytical balance to monitor the weight over a 24-h period, separated into four intervals of 4 h and one of 8 h. The drying rate, shrinkage and anisotropy coefficient of the species were evaluated. Wood wastes of the species C. pluviosum and L. tomentosa showed greater shrinkage during drying, with the lowest drying rates being found among the other species. F. benjamina, D. regia, N. megapotamica, T. catappa and T. tipu showed lower values of shrinkage and regular anisotropy coefficients close to ideal for application to make small wooden objects according to the characteristics of the species already present in the industrial market. The seven species thus have potential for application in the production of small wooden objects and furniture. This use is a potential alternative for environmental and social betterment.
This paper is focused on novel utilizations of the fundamental modes of deformation of tube end forming for assembling sheet panels to thin-walled tubular profiles. The objective is to present an innovative and environmental friendly joining technology built upon the combination of compression beading with tube inversion that can successfully eliminate currently available technologies based on mechanical fixing with fasteners, welding and structural adhesive bonding. The technology works at room temperature, is capable of ensuring significant economic and time savings and offers potential for opening new markets for the assembly of lightweight frame structures. The presentation is supported by experimentation and numerical modelling based on independently determined mechanical properties of the materials with the purpose of characterizing and evaluating the process feasibility limits as a function of the major operative parameters. The feasibility of joining sheet panels to tubular profiles by means of the proposed technology is demonstrated by presenting industrial applications and by evaluating the performance of a safety auto part in an operation failure test. 相似文献
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and Polybrominated Diphenyls Ethers (PBDEs) are two highly lipophilic classes of persistent organic pollutants able to resist degradation and with the ability to bioaccumulate through the food chain. In Brazil, there are still few studies on PCBs and PBDEs in aquatic organisms. In this study, we determined the levels of PBDEs and PCBs in three different fish species from the Ilha Grande Bay, located in the southern state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. PBDEs levels were very low, with values below the limit of quantification. PCBs concentrations ranged from 2.29 to 27.60 ng g?1 ww in muscle and from 3.41 to 34.22 ng g?1 ww in liver of the three investigated fish species. Significant positive correlations were established between PCBs concentration and fish biometric variables in mullet (length and lipid content) and a statistically significant change between seasons in croaker was observed. 相似文献
