This paper is directed to air pollution scientists interested in special mobile emission sources. The purpose was to determine the contribution which automobile tires make to air pollution. The gaseous hydrocarbon and sulfur compounds emitted in laboratory tests were identified. Although these hydrocarbons can participate in smog reactions, their mass emission rate is less than 0.1 % of the current exhaust hydrocarbon emission rate. Hydrocarbons from tires are not measurable near a freeway. The particulate emitted from tires ranges in size from 0.01 μm to more than 30 μm, with the larger particles dominating the total mass. Measurements along a California freeway showed that most of the tire debris had settled within 5 m of the pavement edge. Airborne rubber concentrations were less than 0.5 μg/m3, or less than 5% of the total tire wear. These field measurements confirm the indoor emission pattern and verify that tire wear products are not a significant air pollution problem. 相似文献

Quality Assurance has been defined in many different ways to express concern for the “quality” of the output of some operation or function. For the purpose of this presentation, quality assurance is defined as the sum of those activities within an environmental monitoring or measurement program which are primarily for the purpose of documenting the precision, accuracy, representativeness, and completeness of the data that are produced. Further, we view quality assurance as a management tool which encompasses both administrative and technical functions which generally fall into three categories: (1) Prevention which includes those activities carried out prior to the proper placement and operation of the measurement system; (2) Evaluation which includes the continuous overview and checks on the performance of the systems and operators; and (3) Correction which includes changes made to improve or stabilize the capability and performance of the system. 相似文献

For the past several years, EPA has been measuring particulate emissions from a variety of heavy-duty diesel engines through contracts with Southwest Research Institute. Particulate emissions samples have been collected using an exhaust splitter to divert a fraction of the engine exhaust into a standard dilution tunnel. A small fraction of the diluted exhaust from the tunnel is pulled through a filter from which particulate mass and, in some cases, organic content of the particulate is determined. This paper discusses the sampling system and gives particulate emission factors that have been computed from truck and bus fuel consumption data as well as average truck and bus speed data from New York and Los Angeles (freeway and nonfreeway usage). Average particulate emission test results (steady state tests) for 2-stroke engines were 4.74 g/kg fuel and for 4-stroke engines were 2.64 g/kg fuel. Using average particulate emissions results, a particulate emission factor range of 0.8 to 1.3 g/km was computed. ABSTRACT Previously reported volatile organic compounds (VOC) radiocarbon (14C) measurements for 1992 summertime Atlanta, GA, have been compared with chromatographic data and emissions inventory predictions. The chromatographic approach that was used provided a more comprehensive VOC characterization than typically achieved, and the emissions inventory was research-grade level (date-, site-, and time-specific). The comparisons are in general agreement that biogenic emissions contribute only modestly (<10%) to the VOC content of the particular ambient samples that were collected and measured. The choices of sampling site (near city-center) and times (early morning and late evening) are major influences on the results, which consequently should not be regarded as representing the average VOC biogenic impact for the Atlanta area. 相似文献

This paper describes a risk assessment methodology for preliminary assessment of municipal sludge incineration. The methodology is a valuable tool in that it can be used for determining the hazard indices of chemical contaminants that might be present in sewage sludge used in incineration. The paper examines source characteristics (i.e., facility design), atmospheric dispersion of emission, and resulting human exposure and risk from sludge incinerators. Factors which help minimize pressure drop at a given level of collection efficiency for a bed packed with roughly spherical collectors are studied here by using the quality factor, the ratio of the single collector collection efficiency to the force per unit area on the single collector. This analysis indicates that energy-efficient designs can be obtained as follows: choose a representative particle size; if impaction predominates, design for an impaction parameter near one; if interception predominates, design for the smallest packing diameters feasible; if gravitational settling predominates, design for the largest packing diameters possible; if diffusion predominates, design for collector Reynolds numbers near 102.
