The paper is concerned with estimation of heat and power consumption in a conceptual plant to produce hydrogen from sucrose-containing or starchy biomass by fermentation. A hydrogen plant connected with a sugar factory is regarded as the basic option; the sugar factory serves as a source of sucrose-containing thick juice for the hydrogen plant, where this feedstock is processed to hydrogen. As another option, a stand-alone hydrogen plant in which starch must initially be converted to fermentable glucose solution is considered. The values of key process parameters are assumed on the basis of preliminary experimental data. For both options of the hydrogen plant, heat consumption is estimated taking heat recovery in a heat exchanger network into account. Power consumption is estimated by calculating power needed for pumping of liquid and gaseous process media.  相似文献

Atmospheric samples collected in several American cities were analyzed for SO2 concentration using various analytical methods. The methods were: (1) electroconductivity, (2) West-Gaeke, (3) West-Gaeke with membrane prefdter, (4) West-Gaeke with glass-fiber prefilter, (5) hydrogen peroxide, (6) hydrogen peroxide with membrane prefilter, and (7) hydrogen peroxide with glass-fiber prefilter. The relationships among SO2 data produced by these methods were evaluated statistically. Where statistical differences among methods, at the 95% confidence level, were determined then relationships were further delineated. Factors considered in these comparisons were: (1) location, {2) time of day, (8) concentration range, (4) particulate concentration, and (5) humidity. Laboratory evaluations of these methods show that each method is subject to different interfering substances. The relationship among methods obtained in these studies will complement these data and perhaps provide for further laboratory and field evaluation of methods used to measure SO2. To fully utilize semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) as passive samplers in air monitoring, data are required to accurately estimate airborne concentrations of environmental contaminants. Limited uptake rate constants (kua) and no SPMD air partitioning coefficient (Ksa) existed for vapor-phase contaminants. This research was conducted to expand the existing body of kinetic data for SPMD air sampling by determining kua and Ksa for a number of airborne contaminants including the chemical classes: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organochlorine pesticides, brominated diphenyl ethers, phthalate esters, synthetic pyrethroids, and organophosphate/organosulfur pesticides. The kuas were obtained for 48 of 50 chemicals investigated and ranged from 0.03 to 3.07 m3 g?1 d?1. In cases where uptake was approaching equilibrium, Ksas were approximated. Ksa values (no units) were determined or estimated for 48 of the chemicals investigated and ranging from 3.84E+5 to 7.34E+7. This research utilized a test system (United States Patent 6,877,724 B1) which afforded the capability to generate and maintain constant concentrations of vapor-phase chemical mixtures. The test system and experimental design employed gave reproducible results during experimental runs spanning more than two years. This reproducibility was shown by obtaining mean kua values (n = 3) of anthracene and p,p′-DDE at 0.96 and 1.57 m3 g?1 d?1 with relative standard deviations of 8.4% and 8.6% respectively.  相似文献

This study was conducted to improve the ability of indigenous New Zealand white-rot fungi to remove pentachlorophenol (PCP) from contaminated field soil. The effects of different bioaugmentation conditions on PCP removal and extracellular enzyme expression were measured in the laboratory. The conditions were fungal growth substrate and co-substrate composition, culture age, and Tween 80 addition to the contaminated soil. The fungi used were Trametes versicolor isolate HR131 and Trametes sp. isolate HR577. Maximum PCP removal was 70% after 7 wk from a 1043 mg kg(-1) PCP-contaminated soil inoculated with an 11-d-old fungal culture of T. versicolor isolate HR131. There was minimal production of undesirable pentachloroanisole by the fungi. Tween 80 addition had no affect on PCP removal. Poplar sawdust was more suitable as a fungal growth substrate and a co-substrate amendment for PCP removal and extracellular enzyme expression than the locally available pine and fir sawdust. Pentachlorophenol removal was not necessarily correlated with extracellular enzyme expression. The research results demonstrate that PCP biodegradation was affected by inoculum culture age, by the presence of a co-substrate amendment, and by growth substrate composition after white-rot fungal bioaugmentation into PCP-contaminated field soils.  相似文献

This study analyzes the algorithm by which the animal's nervous system evaluates spatially distributed temporal patterns of electroreceptive information. The outcome of this evaluation controls the jamming avoidance response, which is a shift in the animal's electric organ discharge frequency away from similar foreign frequencies. The encoding of “behaviorally relevant” stimulus variables by electroreceptors and the central computation of their messages are investigated by combined behavioral and neurophysiological strategies.  相似文献

Summary The acorn woodpecker is a cooperative breeder generally thought to breed promiscuously within groups, but alternative patterns of reproductive investment can be expected and remain to be examined. With this feature of mating system in mind, we studied the reproductive roles of individuals in a single group of this species in central coastal California over a three-year period. Particularly detailed observations were made in 1979, when the group consisted of two potentially breeding sibling males and a single breeding female. One male (298) contributed significantly more than 297 in virtually all aspects of nest and fledgling care. These include (1) feeding nestlings, (2) nest sanitation, (3) nocturnal incubation and brooding, (4) feeding fledglings, and (5) escorting fledglings. In the few observed and rarely occurring dominance interactions, 298 prevailed. These results suggest that 298 had a higher probability of fathering the group's two 1979 offspring than did his brother. Thus, the two males differed substantially in their parental roles within the group, and very likely in reproductive roles, also. At present stage of knowledge, monogamy in groups with one female and more than one potential reproductive male is no less likely than promiscuity. These findings are discussed with respect to the evolution of cooperative breeding in this species.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine how user requirements for single-storey houses are translated into actual design layouts. Architectural students were asked to provide floorplans of houses for four quite different hypothetical users. The briefs contained information either about spatial requirements or about life-style characteristics. Another group of architectural students later evaluated the appropriateness of the designs for the intended user. An INDSCAL analysis of the data (inter-room distances) produced a 4-dimensional solution that accounted for 65% of the variance between house designs. The salience of the dimensions seemed to be more a function of the designer than of the requirements of the user.It was found that when users' requirements are expressed in spatial terms only, the designs produced are clearly a function of the user, not the designer. The more information supplied about the user, the greater the tendency for congruence in the designs. When the brief consisted of life-style characteristics only, the results remained equivocal. There appeared to be little consensus on what designs were appropriate for the hypothetical users.The experiment strongly suggested that (a) architecture students handle information about spatial requirements with ease and with a good deal of consensus on what they consider to be the appropriate design solution for each user; (b) information about life-style characteristics and activity profiles, on the other hand, is handled quite differently by different students. In the latter case, the house designs produced probably follow implicit design-behaviour theories that are quite idiosyncratic. A number of theoretical and methodological issues that require further investigation are raised in the discussion.  相似文献
