Part III: The Limits to Single Compound Assessment The principles and basic assumptions of single compound assessment are briefly reviewed. Limitations to this approach are shown, especially with regard to complex mixtures of similar substances, substitution products, and complicated (final) products containing chemicals and materials produced by the chemical industry. A new thinking in product lines and life cycles is emerging, leading to new assessment methods. Long-term ground-based measurements of ozone in Bavaria (Germany) are evaluated in respect of their trend during the last 20 years. First a method is described to characterize the measuring-sites in relation to the levels of precursors: The derived division in three classes proved its worth interpreting the results. Following, the trend of ozone-concentration are calculated by linear regression analysis and are tested in respect of their significance. Generally the Bavarian results fit in the trends of a long-term increase of ozone-concentrations observed at several central European stations. In detail, there are differences between stations situated at elevated sites or at other sites without traffic (class I) and stations situated at sites with significant influence of nearby traffic (classes II and III). At stations of class I an increase of ozone until the mid 80’s is recorded. Afterwards this trend seems to be stopped. But at the stations of classes II and III an increase of ozone is occuring only since the mid 80’s. The observed trends are correlated with the trends of NOx-emissions. 相似文献

Various analyses and evaluative procedures are used to provide evidence of success using remediation procedures. Because of the lack of standardized procedures for soil assessment, general practice has unfortunately propagated the use of DIN standards for determining the level of similar parameters in water as well as for other heterogeneous matrices (e.g. in soil). A precise auditing of quality, however, has not been possible with this method, this procedure has even put the success of such a remediation into question. This article describes the problems of determining mineral hydrocarbon concentrations on soil as well as portraying the remediation of oil damages which has occurred on a site of a former waste oil redestillation facility [1, 2]. In several ant species, colonies are founded by small groups of queens (pleometrosis), which coexist until the first workers eclose, after which all but one queen is killed. It has been hypothesized that, by producing a larger cohort of workers, cooperating queens may increase colony success during brood raids, a form of competition in which brood and workers from losing nests are absorbed into winning colonies. To test whether this benefit is sufficient to favor pleometrosis, newly mated queens of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta were assembled in groups of one, two, three, or four, reared in the laboratory until the first workers eclosed, then planted in the field in replicated assemblages. The proportion of colonies engaging in brood raids increased with average foundress number per nest and with colony density but was unaffected by variance in foundress number among interacting colonies. Within mixed assemblages of single-queen and multiple-queen colonies, queen number had no effect on the likelihood of engaging in raids or the probability of nest survival through the brood raiding period. However, following nearly 30% of raids, queens moved to new nests and displaced the resident queens. When queen relocation and subsequent mortality were accounted for, it was found that the survival of queens from four-queen groups was substantially higher than that of solitary queens. By contrast, the survival of queens from two-queen colonies was no greater than that of solitary queens. These results show that the competitive advantages of multiple-queen colonies are sufficient to counterbalance the increased mortality of queens within groups only when the number of foundresses is greater than two and when colonies are founded at high density. When colonies lose brood raids, the workers appear to abandon their mothers to join surviving colonies. However, in laboratory experiments, queens attempting to enter foreign nests were significantly more likely to displace the resident queen if their own daughters were present within the invaded nest. An elemental analyzer in combination with stable isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS) was used to demonstrate that two samples of the chloropesticide Melipax discovered in two countries varied only by 0.1 per thousand in their delta 13C values. Gas chromatography interfaced to a stable isotope mass spectrometer (GC-IRMS) was used to study the delta 13C values of individual congeners in two technical polybrominated diphenyl ether products, i. e. DE-71 and DE-79, at three different concentration levels. Injections of 4 microg and 5.2 microg of DE-71 and DE-79 were most suited for the determinations. In both products, the delta 13C values were usually the more negative the higher the degree of bromination was. The delta 13C values of three hexabromo isomers BDE 138, BDE 153, and BDE 154 could be determined in both products. From a historical point of view, man's concern about the health and protection of water supply is the history of the dramatic reduction in acute communicable diseases due to water-borne micro-organisms. Now that these have been essentially eliminated, there has been a great reduction in concern by scientists and the medical profession with the health aspects of contaminated water. This, in spite of the fact that many concerned people and national advisory groups have reminded us that an increasing number of possible chemical and other hazards find their way into our water supplies and expose human populations to contaminants at low concentration levels without reliable knowledge as to their health effects. Too little research is being done on the health effects of chemicals, pesticides, and viruses. The fact that large populations are being exposed to these possible hazards raises legal and public policy questions. Persons who are largely ignorant of the possible harm of these substances are being exposed to them without consent. Often low level exposure to environmental contaminants is not known or not discovered until considerable time has passed. This raises the question concerning the burden which should be imposed on industry and others who introduce new substances in the environment. The best approach in solving this problem is to prohibit the new substance from being introduced into the environment until it has been shown by reliable studies that even low level exposure is not likely to harm human health. 相似文献
