The SAFIRA in situ pilot plant in Bitterfeld, Saxonia-Anhalt, Germany, currently serves as the test site for eight different in situ approaches to remediate anoxic chlorobenzene (CB)-contaminated ground water. Two reactors, both filled with originallignite-containing aquifer material, are designed for themicrobiological in situ remediation of the ground water bythe indigenous microbial consortia. In this study, thehydrogeological, chemical and microbiological conditions of theinflowing ground water and reactor filling material are presented,in order to establish the scientific basis for the start of thebioremediation process itself. The reactors were put intooperation in June 1999. In the following, inflow CB concentrationsin the ground water varied between 22 and 33 mg L-1; achemical steady state for CB in both reactors was reachedafter 210 till 260 days operation time. The sediments werecolonized by high numbers of aerobic, iron-reducing anddenitrifying bacteria, as determined after 244 and 285 days ofoperation time. Furthermore, aerobic CB-degrading bacteria weredetected in all reactor zones. Comparative sequence analysis of16S rDNA gene clone libraries suggest the dominance of Proteobacteria (Comamonadaceae, Alcaligenaceae, Gallionella group, Acidithiobacillus) and members of theclass of low G+C gram-positive bacteria in the reactorsediments. In the inflowing ground water, sequences withphylogenetic affiliation to sulfate-reducing bacteria andsequences not affiliated with the known phyla of Bacteria, were found.  相似文献

Summary The tremble dance is a behavior sometimes performed by honeybee foragers returning to the hive. The biological significance of this behavior was unclear until Seeley (1992) demonstrated that tremble dances occur mainly when a colony's nectar influx is so high that the foragers must undertake lenghty searches in order to find food storers to unload their nectar. He suggested that tremble dancing has the effect of stimulating additional bees to function as food-storers, thereby raising the colony's capacity for processing nectar. Here I describe vibrational signals emitted by the tremble dancers. Simulation experiments with artificial tremble dance sounds revealed that these sounds inhibited dancing and reduced recruitment to feeding sites. The results suggest that the tremble dance is a negative feedback system counterbalancing the positive feedback of recruitment by waggle dances. Thus, the tremble dance seems to affect not only the colony's nectar processing rate, but also its nectar intake rate.  相似文献

Human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) via daily liquid consumption (primarily through the intake of drinking water) is estimated using model calculations based on the indicator substance benzo(a)pyrene. The additional contribution to oral exposure by a consumption of solid nutrients, and by soil and dust ingestion, are evaluated using typical background conditions in Germany (conurbations of North-Rhine-Westphalia). A series of further scenarios is then applied to examine the influence of elevated PAH concentrations in the daily intake of liquid. The degree of PAH exposure via liquid only equals or exceeds the exposure via the solid fraction of the diet under very specific conditions. The contribution via liquid consumption to a total lifelong exposure of both BAP and PAH caused by dietary intake may be estimated as approximately 4 %. It increases to 56 % under a level equivalent to the Dutch intervention value for groundwater and reaches 90 % under a level equivalent to the WHO guideline for drinking water. Considering occupants who live on PAH contaminated garden allotments with private wells, the highest degree of exposure is caused by vegetables followed by house dust, then liquid diet and finally by soil. Finally, the model approach is used for evaluating the success of potential remedial treatments with respect to exposure reduction. In addition to the application of average values, conservative estimates of exposure in terms of 95 % values are set out in this publication based on sumulation methodologies.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of workers' perceived participation in democratic decision‐making on their prosocial behavioral orientations, democratic values, commitment to the firm, and perceptions of socio‐moral climate. The sample consists of 325 German‐speaking employees from 22 companies in Austria, North Italy, and Southern Germany that vary in their level of organizational democracy (social partnership enterprises, workers' co‐operatives, democratic reform enterprises, and employee‐owned self‐governed firms). The findings suggest that the extent employees participate in democratic forms of organizational decision‐making is positively related to the firm's socio‐moral climate as well as to their own organizational commitment and prosocial and community‐related behavioral orientations. The results also indicate that socio‐moral climate is positively related to employees' organizational commitment. The effect of participation in decision‐making on organizational commitment is partially mediated by socio‐moral climate. Implications for promoting societal and organizational civic virtues among individuals are described. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The influence of the soil on atmospheric N2O was studied by In-situ measurements in 1976–1979 at several field stations near Mainz, Germany, where different soil types were located. Measurements were carried out using the closed chamber method and applying stainless steel capillaries allowing soil air sampling down to 60 cm depth. The N2O In soil was found to be produced and consumed simultaneously In the uppermost soil layer resulting In a net flux of N2O with release rates of 0.5–16 μg N2O–Nm?2h?1 on unfertilized natural as well as agriculturally used soils. After fertilization with mineral fertilizers the N2O release rates increased to values ≤43 μg N2O–Nm?2h?1. The total amount of fertilizer-N released Into the atmosphere as N2O was determined to be 0.01–0.05% for nitrate and 0.03–0.09 % for ammonium fertilizer.  相似文献

The sorption strength of persistent organic pollutants in soils may vary among different soil organic matter (SOM) pools. We hypothesized that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were unevenly distributed and had different soil organic carbon (SOC)-water partition coefficients (K(OC)) among soil density fractions. We determined the concentrations and K(OC) values of 20 PAHs and 12 PCBs in bulk samples and three density fractions (light, <2.0, medium, 2.0-2.4, and heavy, >2.4 g cm(-3)) of 11 urban topsoils (0-5 cm) from Bayreuth, Germany. The K(OC) values were determined using sequential extraction with methanol-water mixtures (35% and 65% methanol) at 60 degrees C. The sum of 20 PAH concentrations in bulk soil ranged 0.4-186 mg kg(-1), and that of 12 PCB concentrations 1.2-158 microg kg(-1). The concentrations of all PAHs and PCBs decreased in the order light>medium>heavy fraction. When normalized to the SOC concentrations, PAH concentrations were significantly higher in the heavy than in the other density fractions. The K(OC) values of the PAHs in density fractions were 3-20 times higher than those of the PCBs with similar octanol-water partition coefficients (K(OW)). The K(OC) values of individual PAHs and PCBs varied up to a factor of 1000 among the studied soils and density fractions. The K(OC) values of 5- and 6-ring PAHs tended to be highest in the heavy fraction, coinciding with their enrichment in this fraction. For the other PAHs and all PCBs, the K(OC) values did not differ among the density fractions. Thus, there is no relationship between sorption strength and distribution among density fractions, indicating that density fractionation is not a suitable tool to distinguish among differently reactive PAH and PCB pools in soils.  相似文献

This paper presents an attempt to reach natural background levels of heavy metals in surficial sediments of the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean). To correct for the grain-size effect, normalization procedures based on a clay mineral indicator element are commonly used, after a first grain size separation by sieving. In our study, we tested the applicability of this method with respect to commonly used normalizer elements, and found that stable Cs shows the best ability to reflect the fine sediment fraction. Background levels were successfully reached for Co, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb, compared to various literature references. Nevertheless, in the case of lead, the normalized data depicted a general enrichment in all samples, and the natural levels could only be reached when concentrations were corrected for the atmospheric contribution by analysing lead isotope ratios. Also for Zn, a general enrichment was found in our samples, although less important.  相似文献
