Fresh water, a fundamental element of all estuarine ecosystems, is South Africa’s most limited natural resource. Recent projections
indicate that by the year 2020 the country will be utilizing all its exploitable freshwater sources. Steeply increasing demands
by a rapidly growing population on this limited commodity have already resulted in a severe reduction of water supplies to
natural users such as estuaries-this trend is predicted to increase in the future. Concurrent with excesive water abstraction,
poor land husbandry (e.g. soil erosion) in many catchment basins and pollution (e.g. salinization) in return flows have led
to a serious deterioration in water quality. In contrast, a review of estuarine responses to varying flow regimes stresses
the strong dependence of local systems on riverine fresh water inputs of adequate quantity and quality. Freshwater dependence
is i.a. expressed in: flooding events that scour accumulated sediments, riverine nutrient input to drive estuarine phyto-
and zooplankton production, axial salinity gradients that increase habitat and species diversity, and maintenance of open
tidal inlets that prevent salinity and temperature extremes and facilitate larval exchange, fish migrations and tidal flushing
of salt marshes. Thus, estuarine conservation will have to encompass management of rivers and watersheds and play an increasingly
political role in decision processes concerning water allocations among ‘human’ and ‘natural’ users. 相似文献

Autumn-spawned North Sea herring larvae (Clupea harengus L.) were released in two outdoor mesocosms of 2500 m3 (A) and 4000 m3 (B). The mesocosms were monitored for temperature, salinity, oxygen, chlorophyll a, zooplankton and herring larvae abundance. The density of suitable prey for first feeding larvae (mainly copepod nauplii) was initially low in Mesocosm A (<0.11-1) compared to in Mesocosm B (>11-1). Half-way through the experiment the situation was reversed, with higher densities of prey in Mesocosm A (>31-1) as compared to Mesocosm B (11-1). The average temperature declined steadily in both mesocosms from 18°C at release to 11–12°C by the end of the experiment 60 d later. The RNA:DNA values of individual herring larvae were related to protein growth rates and temperature adjusted according to Buckley (1984). A corresponding DNA growth index (Gdi) was given as: Gdi=0.68 TEMP+3.05 RNA:DNA-9.92. The RNA:DNA based growth indices were significantly correlated with other somatic growth estimates. The average estimated protein growth rate in the two mesocosms followed the same temporal pattern as the somatic growth rate, but with a lag of 2 d or more. Residual analysis of the regression of ln RNA versus ln DNA also showed the same temporal pattern as the RNA:DNA ratios, but the shift in condition as estimated by this method occurred more in synchrony with the other somatic growth measures. Larvae in Mesocosm A had RNA:DNA values similar to the starvation control kept in the laboratory the first days after release, confirming that larvae in Mesocosm A initially were in poor nutritional condition. On the other hand, the majority of the herring from Mesocosm B were characterised as starving or in poor nutritional condition towards the end of the experiment. The assessment of growth and nutritional condition were in accordance with independent survival estimates which suggested that the majority of the total mortality occurred during the first 15 d in Mesocosm A and there-after in Mesocosm B. 相似文献

The temperate rain forest of Chiloé Island, Chile, is inhabited by an endemic fox ( Dusicyon fulvipes ) first described by Charles Darwin and now designated Darwin's fox. Despite morphological differences, Darwin's fox has been considered only an insular subspecies of the mainland chilla fox ( D. griseus ). This follows the assumption that the island population, with an estimated population of less than 500, has been separated from the mainland chilla fox for only about 15,000 years and may have received occasional immigrants from the mainland. Consequently, this island population has not been protected as endangered or bred in captivity. Recently, a population of Darwin's fox was discovered on the Chilean mainland 600 km north of Chiloé Island. This population exists in sympatry with chilla and possibly culpeo ( D. culpaeus ) foxes, which suggests that Darwin's fox may be reproductively isolated. To clarify the phylogenetic position of Darwin's fox, we analyzed 344 bp of mitochondrial DNA control-region sequence of the three species of Chilean foxes. Darwin's foxes from the island and mainland populations compose a monophyletic group distinct from the two other Chilean fox species. This indicates that Darwin's fox was probably an early inhabitant of central Chile, and that its present distribution on the mainland may be a relict of a once much wider distribution. Our results highlight the ability of molecular genetic techniques to uncover historical relationships masked by recent events, such as local extinctions. The "rediscovery" of Darwin's fox as a distinct species implies that greater significance should be given to the protection of this species and its unique habitat and to documenting the extent of its mainland distribution. 相似文献

研究了单甲脒(N'-2,4-二甲苯基-N-甲基甲脒,简称DMA)对土壤微生物种群和土壤酶活性的影响.田间试验表明,喷洒单甲脒盐酸盐(DMAH)于棉花植株对土壤微生物种群和土壤酶活性无明显影响.实验室试验表明,投加DMAH于土壤对土壤微生物种群有不同的抑制作用;当DMAH在土壤中的浓度为20mg/g时,好氧异养菌总量开始降低,硝化细菌和放线菌、真菌的土壤DMAH抑制浓度分别为0.5mg/g和0.1mg/g.DMAH对土壤酶活性的影响亦不相同,脱氢酶对土壤中DMAH含量为10mg/g时其活性即有明显的减弱,而过氧化氨酶对DMA的耐受性相当高,其活性的抑制浓度达500mg/g.试验还证明了土壤中DMA的微生物降解作用.当DMA在土壤中的浓度为50~500g/g时,其消解速率可从8.75mm·kg-1·d-1提高到48mg·kg-1·d-1. 相似文献

岩豆种子经侵取、硫酸铵分级、DEAE-纤维素离子交换和SephadexG-100分子筛层析,获得FPLC上单一的凝集素样品,对此纯化的凝集素样品用N-溴代丁二酰亚胺、N-乙基顺丁烯二酰亚胺、二流苏糖醇,碘乙酸和对氯汞苯甲酸修饰其分子内的色氨酸和巯基.经计算,该凝集素分子内含有4个色氨酸和24个流基,当色氨酸被修饰后其凝集活性全部丧失,而巯基被修饰后对其凝血活性无任何影响,表明巯基与凝集素分子的凝血活性无关,而色氨酸则是凝集活性所必需的基团. 相似文献

从巴丹吉林沙漠盐湖表层沉积物中筛选到一株高效耐盐苯酚降解菌CL.测定了菌株CL的生理生化指标、16S rRNA基因序列,通过动力学模型探究了该菌株的生长和苯酚降解特性,同时考察了固定化对其耐受及降解苯酚能力的影响.结果表明,菌株CL属于葡萄球菌属(Staphylococcus sp.),在温度30℃、pH 7.0—8.0、盐度0—10%和苯酚浓度100—200 mg·L-1条件下,该菌株能高效降解苯酚,其降解率均在85%以上.菌株CL对不同浓度苯酚的降解符合Haldane模型,其最大比降解速率和抑制常数分别为0.32 h-1和351.70 mg·L-1,同时该菌株在不同盐度下对苯酚的降解符合Ghose and Tyagi模型.固定化可以明显增加菌株CL对苯酚的降解和耐受能力.菌株CL在高盐环境下能够高效降解苯酚,具有生物处理高盐含酚废水的潜力. 相似文献

密云水库是北京市重要的地表饮用水源地,在保障首都水源安全方面起着重要作用,而密云水库水质参数的区域监测已成为当前亟待解决的问题。为了实现密云水库水质参数大范围、实时获取,该文基于遥感和GIS技术,采用BP神经网络算法,结合地面监测数据和Landsat 8遥感影像,分别建立了反演总磷、总氮、氨氮和COD(化学需氧量)4个水质参数的BP神经网络模型,并反演了密云水库2013-2018年非结冰期主要水质参数,分析了密云水库主要水质参数的年际变化特征、季节变化特征和空间分异特征。结果表明,(1)水质参数的Landsat 8敏感波段分别为:总氮为1、4波段,氨氮为1-7波段,总磷为1、3-7波段,COD为2-5波段。(2)密云水库主要水质参数在2013-2018年总体呈下降趋势,氨氮和COD为Ⅰ类水质,总磷为Ⅱ类水质,总氮为Ⅲ类水质。(3)4个水质参数指标春季最高、秋季次之、夏季最低,总氮、总磷、氨氮和COD的春季值分别是夏季值的1.08、1.36、1.6、1.45倍。(4)密云水库不同水质参数的空间差异性较大,总体来看,水库北部和东部的4个水质参数含量相对较高,这种分布与北部和东部村庄密集以及密云水库两大入库河流有关。综上所述,基于BP神经网络算法的密云水库水质反演研究是可行的,且得到了较为可信的研究结果,该研究可为密云水库水质管理与政策制定提供重要的科学依据。 相似文献

Juvenile red sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, aggregate under adult conspecifics, whereas sympatric juvenile green sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, are typically more solitary and dispersed. Neither the potential advantage of juvenile sheltering nor the differences in
post-settlement behavior between the two species has been demonstrated experimentally, but may be related to protection from
predators and/or hydrodynamics. In predation experiments, juvenile vulnerability differed in the two species as the seastar
Pycnopodia helianthoides consistently chose juvenile S. franciscanus over S. droebachiensis (100% vs. 0%). When associated with adults, juvenile mortality decreased dramatically in S. franciscanus (90% alone vs. 5% with adults), but very little in S. droebachiensis (85% vs. 75%). Not surprisingly, juvenile behavioral responses in the two species reflect this difference in vulnerability.
Juvenile S. franciscanus sheltered under adults when predation risk was high, but not when risk was low (44% vs. 13%), whereas sheltering in S. droebachiensis was infrequent and not related to predation risk (7% for high risk versus 5% for low risk). From a hydrodynamic perspective,
the presence of an adult led to the creation of a hydrodynamic refuge for juveniles, where average water velocities were reduced
by > 60% around the adult urchin. Again, striking differences in sheltering rate were apparent in S. franciscanus (52% vs. 13% for high flow and low flow, respectively), but not S. droebachiensis (5% for high flow versus 4% for low flow). Sheltering behavior was also species-specific as juveniles did not shelter at
high rates under adults of the opposite species (≤ 16%). A field survey confirmed these finding in that juvenile S. franciscanus abundance was associated with both adults and water motion (R
2 = 0.80, P = 0.008, best-subsets regression). These results suggest that sheltering confers juvenile S. franciscanus with a degree of protection from predators and water motion, and that species-specific differences in this post-settlement
behavior may be related to the differences in the protection afforded by adults. 相似文献
