In order to understand why animals are social and how group members interact with each other it is important to know their relatedness. However, few studies have investigated the genealogy in complete social groups of free-living animals with low reproductive skew. This holds particularly true for bats. Although almost all bat species are social, their sociobiology is not well understood. Because they are volant, nocturnal and have a rather cryptic life-style, bats are difficult to observe in the wild. Furthermore females are generally gregarious making genetic parent-offspring assignment a challenging task. We used genetic markers in combination with knowledge about age and colony membership of individually marked bats to construct pedigrees in completely sampled maternity colonies of Bechstein's bats (Myotis bechsteinii). Despite considerable fluctuations in population size, no immigration occurred over 5 years in four colonies living in close proximity. Additionally, confrontation tests showed that females of one maternity colony were able to detect and attempted to prevent the intrusion of foreign females into a roost they occupy. Although colonies were absolutely closed, and 75% of the colony members lived together with close relatives (rS=0.25), mean colony relatedness was nearly zero (0.02). Average relatedness therefore is a poor estimator for the potential of kin selection in Bechstein's bat colonies and may be misleading when attempting to understand the social structure of animals living in groups where many members breed. Based on our results we discuss the potential adaptive value of living in closed societies with low reproductive skew.  相似文献

Based on demographic analysis of four different temporally enclosed demes of Pandalus borealis in Gullmarsfjorden on the Swedish west coast and published information, I discuss the notion of environmental sex determination in protandric pandalid shrimps as suggested by sex allocation theory. Demographic results showed that age structure and mortality rates varied substantially between four studied periods without noticeable effects on the age of sex change in the fjord populations. The majority of shrimps changed sex at an approximate age of 3 years and became females at an age of 3 to 4 years, however, low proportions (4 to 7%) of 2nd year females (transitional at ca. 1 year) and 3rd year females (5 to 12%) (transitional at ca. 2 years) were present each year. Low proportions of primary females were also found in two of the temporally enclosed demes, in 1985 (9%) and in 1987 (5%). These results do not indicate that yearly variations in age structure, mortality, or frequency of older breeders in the breeding population affect the age of sex change in temporally enclosed fjord demes of this protandric species. An alternative to assuming that the protandric mode of reproduction in pandalid shrimp is combined with environmental sex determination is suggested. Conspicuous color patterns in birds may lead to increased risk of predation. Alternatively, bright birds may be aposematic or unprofitable prey, which leads to decreased predation. During four autumns, I examined whether the black-and-white plumage of (stuffed) magpies Pica pica increases or reduces the risk of attack by migrating goshawks Accipiter gentilis. Attack risk was higher for normal magpies than for cryptic, brown magpies whether the mounts were placed near one another or far apart. However, the brown magpie may have been avoided because of its novelty. For magpies and cryptic jays Garrulus glandarius exposed together, the attack risk was similar. In 2 years, magpie and jay mounts were also exposed far apart. In 1994, with an invasion of migrating jays, attack risk was much higher for jays than for magpies. In 1995, with a normal density of jays, hawks attacked the magpies more often. The results demonstrate frequency-dependent prey selection by goshawks, which would influence any predation cost of bright plumage. The attacks on normally colored magpie mounts suggest that magpies are not aposematic. Trials with photographs and human observers indicated that normal magpies were somewhat easier to detect than jays. The plumage of the magpie possibly increases the risk of predation, but may be favoured by sexual or social selection. Received: 18 January 1996 / Accepted after revision: 6 October 1996  相似文献

Contents and distribution of platinum-group-elements (PGE) in soils caused by automobile emissions were investigated at three transects perpendicular to the road at various depths. Concentrations of platinum, rhodium and palladium were determined by ICP-MS after separation and preconcentration by nickel-sulphide fire-assay. Platinum contents in roadside soils range from 250 μg/kg to the local background values which are below 0.5–0.8 μg/kg. Ratios of platinum and rhodium (about 6∶1) are similar to the ratios in catalytic converters. There is evidence for a significant correlation of PGE input and local parameters such as traffic-conditions, distance from the trafficlane, prevailing wind direction, and barriers such as vegetation or morphology.  相似文献

Repertoire size, the number of unique song or syllable types in the repertoire, is a widely used measure of song complexity in birds, but it is difficult to calculate this exactly in species with large repertoires. A new method of repertoire size estimation applies species richness estimation procedures from community ecology, but such capture-recapture approaches have not been much tested. Here, we establish standardized sampling schemes and estimation procedures using capture-recapture models for syllable repertoires from 18 bird species, and suggest how these may be used to tackle problems of repertoire estimation. Different models, with different assumptions regarding the heterogeneity of the use of syllable types, performed best for different species with different song organizations. For most species, models assuming heterogeneous probability of occurrence of syllables (so-called detection probability) were selected due to the presence of both rare and frequent syllables. Capture-recapture estimates of syllable repertoire size from our small sample did not differ significantly from previous estimates using larger samples of count data. However, the enumeration of syllables in 15 songs yielded significantly lower estimates than previous reports. Hence, heterogeneity in detection probability of syllables should be addressed when estimating repertoire size. This is neglected using simple enumeration procedures, but is taken into account when repertoire size is estimated by appropriate capture-recapture models adjusted for species-specific song organization characteristics. We suggest that such approaches, in combination with standardized sampling, should be applied in species with potentially large repertoire size. On the other hand, in species with small repertoire size and homogenous syllable usage, enumerations may be satisfactory. Although researchers often use repertoire size as a measure of song complexity, listeners to songs are unlikely to count entire repertoires and they may rely on other cues, such as syllable detection probability.Communicated by A. Landfills are still the most widely used solid waste disposal method used across the world. Leachate generated from landfill areas exerts environmental risks mostly on surface and groundwater, with its high pollutant content, most notably metals, which cause an unbearable lower water quality. During dumping or after the capacity of the landfill has been reached, a decontamination and remediation program should be taken for the area. This study was conducted to assess the capacity and efficiency of Pennisetum clandestinum, a prostrate perennial plant, to accumulate chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb). Leachate, taken from the Sofulu Landfill Site, was given to Pennisetum clandestinum for 180 days, in 3 dilution sets as 1/1, 1/2 and 1/4, in batch configuration. An additional control set was also installed for comparison. Results showed that, even though the metal content of soil had risen, plants accumulated 2 to 8.5 times higher concentrations than the control set. It is important to see, the plant showed almost no stress symptoms even if the set was fed by pure leachate. Pennisetum clandestinum was observed to accumulate metals mostly in the upper bodies, excluding Fe and Cu. 76% of accumulated Cr, 85% of Ni, 66% of Zn and 100% of Pb was observed to accumulate in above-ground parts, where only 20% of Cu and 4% of Fe was accumulated. Due to the high pollution tolerance of Pennisetum clandestinum, makes this plant suitable for decontamination and remediation of landfill sites.  相似文献

Natural marine phytoplankton populations from the German Wadden Sea and unialgal cultures of the haptophycean Phaeocystis pouchetii were tested in 1989 under controlled UV-B stress conditions. Assimilation of 15N-nitrate in phytoplankton consisting mainly of P. pouchetii, or in pure cultures of this alga, was found to be very sensitive to enhanced UV-B dosage in comparison 15N-ammonia uptake. In contrast, in phytoplankton samples containing Ceratium spp., Coscinodiscus sp., Noctiluca sp. or others, rate of 15NO3 - uptake was higher and only slightly affected by UV-B irradiance compared to the P. pouchetii sample. UV-B inhibitory effect on uptake of inorganic nitrogen by P. pouchetii was more pronounced under strong white-light conditions and after a UV-B pre-illumination period of several hours than under low white light. Pools of glutamine and alanine decreased after UV-B exposure. Results are discussed with reference to the damaging effects of white light and UV-B on nitrogen metabolism.  相似文献
