A pilot phytoremediation project was conducted at the Mukluk site in Sprague, Connecticut, formerly a private skeet shooting range. A series of experiments was conducted to investigate if any plants can be effective lead phytoextractors for this site that has very high soil lead concentrations and low soil pH. Greenhouse screening of plants for lead resistance and accumulation using field soil was implemented as the initial step before the field installation. Herbaceous plant species with known lead phytoextraction capabilities included Indian mustard and blue fescue; a few willow clones with purported heavy metal resistance were also tested. Based on the results of the greenhouse experiments, blue fescue appeared to be sensitive to high lead concentration in soil, and only willows and Indian mustard along with various soil amendments were selected for the field installation. Indian mustard grew poorly in most of the treatments at the site except in the compost and lime treatment. Lead accumulation by this species was low in all treatments. In contrast, willows showed tolerance to very high lead concentrations present in the soil and were able to uptake and translocate lead into aboveground tissues. However, lead content in aerial tissues was low, and no change in soil lead concentration at the site was recorded post‐harvest after one growing season. It appeared that highly unfavorable soil characteristics at the Mukluk site complicated the species selection, and no effective phytoextractors have been found for this location. These suggest that the feasibility of phytostabilization and possible production of biofuel from willow biomass on these types of sites should be further investigated. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

A Jewish couple of mixed origin was referred for genetic counseling following termination of pregnancy at 18 weeks of gestation due to severe ventriculomegaly with aqueduct stenosis. Trio exome sequencing revealed a loss-of-function heterozygous variant in the SMARCC1 gene inherited from an unaffected mother. The SMARCC1 gene is associated with embryonic neurodevelopmental processes. Recent studies have linked perturbations of the gene with autosomal dominant congenital hydrocephalus, albeit with reduced penetrance. However, these studies were not referenced in the SMARCC1 OMIM record (*601732) and the gene was not considered, at the time, an OMIM morbid gene. Following our case and appeal, SMARCC1 is now considered a susceptibility gene for hydrocephalus. This allowed us to reclassify the variant as likely pathogenic and empowered the couple to make informed reproductive choices. 相似文献

The sensitivity of biogenic emission estimates and air quality model predictions to the characterization of land use/land cover (LULC) in southeastern Texas was examined using the Global Biosphere Emissions and Interactions System (GloBEIS) and the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with extensions (CAMx). A LULC database was recently developed for the region based on source imagery collected by the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper-Plus sensor between 1999 and 2003, and field data for land cover classification, species identification and quantification of biomass densities. Biogenic emissions estimated from the new LULC data set showed good general agreement in their spatial distribution, but were approximately 40% lower than emissions from the LULC data set currently used by the State of Texas, primarily because of differences in the biomass estimates of key species such as Quercus. Predicted ozone mixing ratios using the biogenic emissions produced from the new LULC data set were as much as 26 ppb lower in some areas on some days, depending on meteorological conditions. Satellite data and image classification techniques provide useful tools for mapping and monitoring changes in LULC. However, field validation is necessary to link species and biomass densities to the classification system used for accurate biogenic emissions estimates, especially in areas such as riparian corridors that contain dense spatial coverage of key species. 相似文献

农户如何利用森林资源、发展林业情况是实现森林丰富地区农户生计改善和森林资源保护的关键。本文通过对西安周至县南部4个山区乡镇20个行政村1 074个农户的问卷调查,发现当地存在着4种与林业相关的生计活动类型,即:林业专业化、林业补充型、林业依赖型和生计多样化,该4种类型的农户在家庭人口数、初中以上受教育程度的人数、非农收入、户纯收入、贫困发生率等方面存在着显著差异。同时,被调查农户发展生计多样化出现了收入的两极分化,林业专业化农户的收入水平和消费状况总体上要好于生计多样化型农户。采用Multinomial Logit模型对农户林业相关生计活动类型选择的影响因素的分析发现,家庭劳动力数量、女性比例、是否参与退耕、土地林地面积、家庭社会网络等对农户选择不同的林业生计类型有着显著影响。基于实证研究的结果,本文认为应提高农户的人力资本、培育农村社区组织、提高其治理能力等。 相似文献

We introduce a novel geometry‐oriented methodology, based on the emerging tools of topological data analysis, into the change‐point detection framework. The key rationale is that change points are likely to be associated with changes in geometry behind the data‐generating process. While the applications of topological data analysis to change‐point detection are potentially very broad, in this paper, we primarily focus on integrating topological concepts with the existing nonparametric methods for change‐point detection. In particular, the proposed new geometry‐oriented approach aims to enhance detection accuracy of distributional regime shift locations. Our simulation studies suggest that integration of topological data analysis with some existing algorithms for change‐point detection leads to consistently more accurate detection results. We illustrate our new methodology in application to the two closely related environmental time series data sets—ice phenology of the Lake Baikal and the North Atlantic Oscillation indices, in a research query for a possible association between their estimated regime shift locations. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to develop new vinyl flooring formulations with increased resistance to fungi and microorganisms attack, by using plasticizers having a chemical composition different from that of common di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DOP). It is suspected that during the vinyl flooring life service, the attack of fungi and microorganisms leads to the degradation of DOP and the release of some volatile organic compounds (VOC). For this reason the new materials were formulated with plasticizers having chemical composition different of that of DOP i.e.: diethyleneglycol dibenzoate (2–45), tricresyl phosphate (Lindol) and phenol alkylsulphonic ester (Mesamoll). For the same reason in the new flooring formulations the vinyl polymer, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer (VC-VAc), was partially replaced with lignin (L) a natural polymer and major component of wood and vascular plants. Besides its other functions in wood, L imparts resistance to the most microorganisms attack. An organosolv lignin Alcell lignin (AL) was utilized as partial replacement of VC-VAc copolymer.The influence of the new plasticizers, as well as the influence of the partial replacement of VC-VAc copolymer with L on the resistance of the new formulations to fungal attack was evaluated following a standard procedure given in ASTM G 21–2002 “Determining Resistance of Synthetic Polymeric Materials to Fungi”. The evaluation has been undertaken for controls (formulated without AL) and blends (formulated with 20 parts AL) specimens. Test specimens were inoculated with a mixture of five fungi. Following 28 days of incubation at 28°C and 95% relative humidity, the specimens were examinated visual and under the microscope and rated for fungal growth. Weight loss, changes in mechanical properties and changes in glass transition temperature due to the effect of biodeterioration were also determined.Although each plasticizer has a specific resistance to hydrolysis due to differences among ester groups, the visible effects of fungal attack, in formulations without AL, is similar for all plasticized controls, with the exception of formulations incorporating diethyleneglycol dibenzoate (2–45) in which a higher degree of biodegradation was always present. Based on the weight loss of specimens formulated without AL, their resistance to fungal attack can be rated as follows:
