Municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) have been shown to be important sources of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). The emission of PCDD/Fs by MSWIs is a controversial subject in human health risk assessment. In this study the effect of a MSWI on a residential area was assessed before and after the installation of an additional treatment system for flue gas. This additional treatment system resulted in a dramatic decrease in PCDD/F concentrations in stack flue gas samples by 99.98%, while the concentrations in air decreased by approximately 50% (36,500 and 0.75 pg I-TEQ m(-3) for air in 1999; 3.5 and 0.38 pg I-TEQ m(-3) in 2002; 1.6 and 0.076 pg I-TEQ m(-3) in 2005 for stack gas and air, respectively). Considering the congener distributions of PCDD/Fs between stack flue gas and air samples, the study area seemed to have been contaminated by other urban sources as well as the MSWI. ISC3 model results support the conclusion that this incinerator became only a minor contributor to the study area after installation of the supplementary systems. This resulted from both proper MSWI operation using modern technology and additional sources of contaminants in this region. Finally, PCDD/F uptake by humans through inhalation of contaminated air was estimated. Assuming that inhalation exposure contributes 10% of total exposure, total exposure was lower than WHO guidelines. These results confirm that proper operation and maintenance of the incinerator led to a reduction in emissions and potential health impacts of PCDD/Fs.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of food waste constituents on thermophilic (55 degrees C) anaerobic codigestion of sewage sludge and food waste by using statistical techniques based on biochemical methane potential tests. Various combinations of grain, vegetable, and meat as cosubstrate were tested, and then the data of methane potential (MP), methane production rate (MPR), and first-order kinetic constant of hydrolysis (kH) were collected for further analyses. Response surface methodology by the Box-Behnken design can verify the effects and their interactions of three variables on responses efficiently. MP was mainly affected by grain, whereas MPR and kH were affected by both vegetable and meat. Estimated polynomial regression models can properly explain the variability of experimental data with a high-adjusted R2 of 0.727, 0.836, and 0.915, respectively. By applying a series of optimization techniques, it was possible to find the proper criteria of cosubstrate. The optimal cosubstrate region was suggested based on overlay contours of overall mean responses. With the desirability contour plots, it was found that optimal conditions of cosubstrate for the maximum MPR (56.6 mL of CH4/g of chemical oxygen demand [COD]/day) were 0.71 g of COD/L of grain, 0.18 g of COD/L of vegetable, and 0.38 g of COD/L of meat by the simultaneous consideration of MP, MPR, and kH. Within the range of each factor examined, the corresponding optimal ratio of sewage sludge to cosubstrate was 71:29 as the COD basis. Elaborate discussions could yield practical operational strategies for the enhanced thermophilic anaerobic codigestion of sewage sludge and food waste.  相似文献

Solutions of the pollution transport problem and its adjoint are used to monitor mean pollution concentration in an ecologically important zone. Four strategies of control over pollutants released into the atmosphere by industrial plants are suggested. They differ by the restrictions imposed on the emission rate of each plant. All the strategies use solutions of the adjoint transport problem and assure the fulfillment of the sanitary norm in the zone. A linear interpolation of these strategies also brings pollution level in the zone down to the sanitary norm. A method of detecting the plants violating the prescribed emission rates is also given. A simple example is given to illustrate the strategies suggested.  相似文献

For groundwater conservation and management, it is important to accurately assess groundwater pollution vulnerability. This study proposed an integrated model using ridge regression and a genetic algorithm (GA) to effectively select the major hydro-geological parameters influencing groundwater pollution vulnerability in an aquifer. The GA-Ridge regression method determined that depth to water, net recharge, topography, and the impact of vadose zone media were the hydro-geological parameters that influenced trichloroethene pollution vulnerability in a Korean aquifer. When using these selected hydro-geological parameters, the accuracy was improved for various statistical nonlinear and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, such as multinomial logistic regression, decision trees, artificial neural networks, and case-based reasoning. These results provide a proof of concept that the GA-Ridge regression is effective at determining influential hydro-geological parameters for the pollution vulnerability of an aquifer, and in turn, improves the AI performance in assessing groundwater pollution vulnerability.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to estimate biogas production by anaerobic digestion of agricultural byproduct silage at the low carbon green village in South Korea. The composition of agricultural byproduct from hot pepper farms was analyzed and it was found to be favorable with anaerobic digestion. In the cases of silage materials, the theoretical methane potentials of all of the ensiled materials were increased with silage storage having an increased range from 103 to 120 % compared to that without ensiling. The biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests showed that the ultimate methane potential of ensiled material was measured to be higher than that of raw material without silage storage, while the first order hydrolysis constant was lower. All of the silage materials containing microbial additives used in this study showed higher ultimate methane potentials and first order hydrolysis constants than raw material and silage material without additives. The change of ultimate methane potential was analyzed over time, and all of the test materials, except Day 2, showed higher ultimate methane potential than raw material, Day 0, and the highest was found on Day 40.  相似文献

Groundwater remediation was evaluated for combined autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification under high (154 mg/L as CaCO3) and low (95 mg/L as CaCO3) alkaline conditions. Two levels of acetate (47 and 94 mg/L) and ethanol (24 and 48 mg/L) were added to the reactors. Obtained denitrification rates were 2.89, 2.58, 3.55, 1.96, and 2.0 mg-N/L?·?h for high alkaline conditions, whereas under low alkaline conditions has given 2.36, 1.94, 2.47, 2.74, and 2.29 mg-N/L?·?h for control, 47 and 94 mg/L acetate, and 24 and 48 mg/L ethanol, respectively. Nitrite was accumulated for controls but reactors with acetate and ethanol did not accumulate nitrite. Acetate and ethanol addition decreased sulfate to nitrate ratios in the range of 4.5–7.58 for high alkaline conditions (12.77 for control) and 4.43–6.78 for low alkaline conditions (7.90 for control). Acetate was more efficient compared with ethanol in controlling sulfate production and pH maintenance.  相似文献

Abstract

This study was carried out to recover valuable metals from the printed circuit boards (PCBs) of waste computers. PCB samples were crushed to smaller than 1 mm by a shredder and initially separated into 30% conducting and 70% nonconducting materials by an electrostatic separator. The conducting materials, which contained the valuable metals, were then used as the feed material for magnetic separation, where it was found that 42% of the conducting materials were magnetic and 58% were nonmagnetic. Leaching of the nonmagnetic component using 2 M H2SO4 and 0.2 M H2O2 at 85 °C for 12 hr resulted in greater than 95% extraction of Cu, Fe, Zn, Ni, and Al. Au and Ag were extracted at 40 °C with a leaching solution of 0.2 M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.02 M CuSO4, and 0.4 M NH4OH, which resulted in recovery of more than 95% of the Au within 48 hr and 100% of the Ag within 24 hr. The residues were next reacted with a 2 M NaCl solution to leach out Pb, which took place within 2 hr at room temperature.  相似文献

Objective: Although identification of factors that influence helmet use during bicycle riding is necessary for the selection of groups that require safe cycling education, limited baseline data are available. The aim of the present study was to analyze the rate of helmet use and the demographic factors that were independently associated with helmet use among Korean bicycle riders.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we used public data from the Sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2013 and 2014. Helmet users were defined as subjects who always, usually, or frequently wore helmets when cycling. Independent factors associated with helmet use were determined using odds ratios (ORss) adjusted for 5 demographic factors via multivariate logistic regression analysis.

Results: In the total population, 4,103 individuals were bicycle riders; among these, 782 individuals (19.1%) wore helmets. A total of 21.1% of male riders used helmets, compared to 15.5% of female riders (P <.001). The adjusted logistic regression model revealed that female sex (OR = 0.665; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.554–0.797), teenage status (OR = 0.475, 95% CI, 0.333–0.678), and low household income (OR = 0.657, 95% CI 0.513–0.841) were significantly associated with nonuse of helmets.

Conclusions: Female sex, teenage status, and low household income were independent factors associated with the nonuse of helmets. We identified factors associated with helmet use during bicycle riding through analysis of baseline data on helmet usage.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to isolate and characterize potential autochthonous bacteria for biomineralization of Pb in mine tailings. A total of four bacteria were isolated from the soil samples and assayed for tolerance to Pb and other heavy metals. Isolate KK1 exhibited maximum Pb resistance and was subsequently identified as Bacillus sp. based on the partial 16S rRNA gene sequences. The isolate KK1 reduced the Pb ions and did not harbor pbrT gene. Selective sequential extraction of bioaugmented soil revealed that the isolate significantly reduced (26%) the exchangeable fraction and increased (38%) the carbonate fraction of Pb. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the role of bacterially induced calcite precipitation in the bioremediation of mine tailings. A significant increase in the urease (334%), DHO (dehydrogenase) (14%), and phosphatase (37%) activity was observed in the bioaugmented mine soil.  相似文献
