A sample of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) powder was milled with CaO powder in a planetary mill for various mill operational parameters.
The milled product consisted of dechlorinated hydrocarbon and water-soluble CaOHCl. The dechlorination rate of PVC was determined
by the concentration of Cl− ions measured in solution after dispersing the milled product in water. To evaluate the power consumption during PVC dechlorination,
the mill power consumption was measured during each experimental run. In addition, media motion during planetary milling was
simulated using the discrete element method (DEM), enabling calculation of the mill power consumption. The power consumption
calculated by the DEM simulation compared well with the power consumption measured experimentally. The dechlorination rate
correlated well with the specific mill power consumption, regardless of the sample weight. The dechlorination rate of PVC
when milled with oyster shells (CaCO3) was observed to be faster than that of the PVC/CaO system, and oyster shells could be used as a reactant for the treatment
of PVC wastes. This work should be useful for the design of a reactor for the dechlorination of PVC.

ABSTRACT: In‐reservoir thermal and ecological effects of releasing some flows over the surface spillway at Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado, rather than routing all releases through the hypolimnetic outlet were evaluated using a calibrated and validated one‐dimensional thermal model (CE‐THERM) with a set of ecological models. Thermal model output indicated that surface water temperatures were influenced primarily by atmospheric conditions, but the release of warmer water over the spillway resulted in a thinner epilimnion and cooler metalimnetic water temperatures. Ecological model predictions indicated that spillway releases and associated temperatures resulted in lower growth rates for young‐of‐year (YOY) kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in the reservoir by up to 9 percent when compared with growth rates under baseline operations with no releases over the spillway. Kokanee growth rates were reduced under spillway release scenarios because lower temperatures not only affected metabolic rates, but limited the productivity of the zooplankton as well. Thus, altering the release regime with spillway discharges could have deleterious effects on Blue Mesa's YOY kokanee. However, in other reservoirs, distributing discharges among different elevations may provide managers with a mechanism to regulate temperatures to benefit species of concern that are facing challenges imposed by environmental conditions such as global warming. 相似文献

Public attention was aroused when mutagenicity was found in potassium bromate (KBrO3) which has been used as an oxidizing agent in baking bread. Ion chromatography was found to be very useful for analyzing bromide and bromate ions in food. The residual condition of potassium bromate added to bread in the baking process was clarified.It was found that the residual rate of bromate ions in bread was approximately 30% at the added level of 100 μg/g, but it decreased markedly when the added levels went down. In sustainability science (SS), it is difficult to identify what needs to be solved, and it is also not clear how to solve the problems that are identified. There has been no consensus on the underlying question of “What is structuring knowledge in SS?” This paper focuses on knowledge structuring accompanied by supporting of thinking. It addresses the key challenges associated with knowledge structuring in SS, identifies the requirements for the structuring of knowledge, proposes a reference model, and develops an ontology-based mapping tool as a solution to one layer of the reference model. First, we identify the important requirements for SS knowledge structuring. Second, we develop a reference model composed of five layers based on three of the requirements. Third, we develop an ontology-based mapping tool at Layer 2 of the reference model for meeting the two major challenges for SS, namely, identifying what problems should be addressed in SS itself and proposing solutions for those problems. The tool is designed to store and retrieve information regarding SS, to provide access to a prototype ontology for SS, and to create multiple maps of conceptual chains depending on a user’s interests and perspectives. Finally, we assess whether the developed tool successfully realizes the targeted part of the reference model for SS by examining the tool’s conformity to the reference model, as well as its usability, effectiveness, and constraints. Although several issues were identified in the prototype ontology and the mapping tool, the study concluded that the mapping tool is useful enough to facilitate the function of Layer 2. In particular, the mapping tool can support thinking about SS from the viewpoint of: (a) finding new potentials and risks of technological countermeasures studied in SS; (b) helping users to get a more comprehensive picture of problems and their potential solutions; and (c) providing an effective opportunity to come up with new ideas that might not be thought of without such a tool. 相似文献

Both the UK and Japan are densely populated islands with relatively short rivers. Therefore, both countries are likely to be highly exposed to contaminants emanating from their human populations. This review considered how effective the different sewage treatment facilities of the two countries are at removing steroid estrogens from the effluent. The methods of estrogen analysis in sewage effluent, the number and importance of different sewage treatment types, and their apparent effectiveness at removing estrogens were all considered. In both countries, the activated sludge treatment was dominant in terms of people served and water discharged. The analytical techniques used by those studying estrogen concentrations in effluents in both countries were broadly similar. Activated sludge plant (ASP) effluent in the UK typically contained around 2 ng/L estradiol (E2) and 8 ng/L estrone (E1), while Japanese ASPs typically reported E2 as below detection, and 10 ng/L E1 in their effluents. When estrogenic bioassays were used in Japan, they typically record an estrogenic potency of 10 ng/L E2 equivalents. Even taking into account ethinylestradiol (EE2) (not found in Japanese effluents), the overall estrogenicity of British sewage effluents would appear to be the same as that of Japanese sewage effluents (around 10 ng/L E2 equivalents). This suggests that the ASPs serving the large urban communities in Japan and the UK would have effluent of similar estrogenic potencies. Less information is available about the more numerous biological (trickling) filter plants (BFP) in the UK and oxygen ditches (OD) in Japan which tend to serve smaller, more rural communities. The available data would suggest that the BFPs are significantly less efficient than the ODs at removing E1. This would suggest that in similar circumstances, British headwaters (where this sewage treatment plant (STP) type is often found) might be more at risk from endocrine disruption than their Japanese counterparts. Overall, the apparently higher incidence of endocrine disruption in British wild fish than in Japanese wild fish cannot be attributed to differences in the efficiency of their respective STPs. 相似文献

Bulk atmospheric deposition fluxes of (210)Po and (210)Pb were measured at three coastal regions of Japan, the Pacific Ocean coastal area of the Japanese mainland (Odawa Bay), the Chinese continental side of Japanese coastal area (Tsuyazaki), and an isolated island near Okinawa (Akajima). Wet and dry fallout collectors were continuously deployed from September 1997 through August 1998 for periods of 3 to 31 days depending on the frequency of precipitation events. Annual (210)Pb deposition fluxes at Odawa Bay (35 degrees N 139 degrees E), Tsuyazaki (33 degrees N 130 degrees E) and Akajima (26 degrees N 127 degrees E) were 73.3+/-8.0, 197+/-35 and 78.5+/-8.0 Bqm(-2)y(-1), respectively. Higher (210)Pb deposition was observed at the Chinese continental side of Japanese coast than at the Pacific Ocean coastal site. The high (210)Pb atmospheric flux at the Chinese continental side coast was thought to be attributable to (222)Rn-rich air-mass transport from the Chinese continent during the winter monsoon. In contrast, the annual (210)Po deposition fluxes at the three study sites were 13.0+/-2.3 (Odawa Bay), 21.9+/-4.4 (Tsuyazaki) and 58.4+/-7.7 (Akajima)Bqm(-2)y(-1), respectively, indicating unusual high (210)Po deposition at Akajima during winter. Anomalous unsupported (210)Po input was observed during summer 1997, suggesting unknown source of (210)Po at this area. 相似文献

Potassium Bromate was administered orally to rats and its fate in the body was studied. The bromate was rapidly absorbed from the digestive tract and was partly excreted in the urine within two hours of administration. No bromate was detected in body organs or in the blood 24 hours after dosing. Excretion of bromate into the urine was proportional to the dose, except that at 2.5mg/kg or less no excretion was observed. A rubber-degrading strain of Nocardia was cultured on tread rubber particles from a truck tire by a two-step cultivation method. At the first step, the culture medium was either not agitated or stirred at very slow rate of 40 rpm for one or 2 weeks. At the second step, the culture medium was stirred at relatively higher stirring rate of 150 or 300 rpm for seven or six weeks. It was found that the rate of disintegration was greatly increased and the weight losses of the particles with diameters of about 2.3 mm were as high as 40% in the two-step method and only 20–30% in a one-step method in which the stirring rate was kept constant throughout the culture period. With this method, microbial colonization and disintegration were depressed particularly at the corners of the cubic particles and characteristic protuberant structures were observed at the corners after the removal of microbial cells by washing. 相似文献

Changes of BOD/TOD and DOC with time were obtained for solutions of 9 synthetic surfactants and 2 fatty acid salts under various conditions. The cationic surfactants, ABM and ABDM, were not biodegraded at all and inhibited the biodegradation of a synthetic sewage.
