Summary Mating in the bushcricket Metaplastes ornatus Ramme 1931 entails a number of peculiar genital couplings that precede the transfer of the large spermatophore. During these phase-I couplings, the male introduces his specially structured subgenital plate into the female's genital chamber, performs back-and-forth movements, and turns her genital chamber inside out when he withdraws, whereupon the female carefully cleans her everted genital chamber with her mouthparts. During the last coupling (phase II) the male's subgenital plate is not introduced but the large spermatophore, which averages 22% of a male's body weight, is transferred. Counts of sperm in the spermathecae of females suggested that the phase-I couplings, which occur prior to spermatophore transfer, function to remove, or at least to reduce, the sperm of a female's previous mates. The form of the keel of the male's subgenital plate, its position within the female's genital tract during phase-I couplings, and the back-and-forth movements suggest that the male may stimulate release of sperm from the female's spermatheca by a mechanism similar to fertilization as eggs pass through the genital chamber during oviposition. 相似文献

Sponges (Porifera) represent the evolutionary oldest metazoan phylum still extant today. They have developed a complex Bauplan, based on the existence of structural and regulatory molecules; many of these have been cloned and analyzed in the past years. The demosponge Suberites domuncula has been used as a suitable model to demonstrate that these animals not only possess an adaptive immune response on the level of cytokines, but also, as pointed out here, on the level of synthesis of bioactive alkyl-lipid derivatives. From specimens of S. domuncula the two lyso-PAF (platelet-activating factor) compounds, 1-O-hexadecyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and 1-O-octadecyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, have been identified and characterized. These two lyso-PAFs showed pronounced anti-bacterial activity. In the central part of this paper it is shown that the level of synthesis of the lyso-PAF congeners increased in response to the model compound, the endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Treatment of the tissue with LPS for 72 h substantially increased the synthesis. In order to prove that the lyso-PAFs are really synthesized by the sponge, the key enzyme of the alkyl-dihydroxyacetonephosphate pathway, i.e. alkyl-dihydroxyacetonephosphate synthase (ADS), was cloned from S. domuncula. This sponge enzyme comprises the characteristic features of metazoan ADS enzymes; it is increasingly expressed in the tissue and in the in vitro cell culture system after exposure to LPS. These data are taken as a strong indication that bioactive, low-molecular weight, non-proteinaceous lipid derivatives function in an adaptive manner in response to the endotoxin.Communicated by R. The uptake and distribution of cadmium in tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum, Mill, cv. Tiny Tim) were examined with and without the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as chelating agent and 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) as metabolic inhibitor. Eight-week-old intact and derooted tomato seedlings were used in hydroculture experiments with cadmium applied as (115)Cd(NO(3))(2) in a range of concentrations. Measurements of the (115)Cd content of roots, stems and leaves were carried out by gamma-ray spectroscopy. The data showed that applications of both EDTA and DNP resulted in reduced total Cd accumulation in the plants, but relatively enhanced Cd transport into the above-ground plant parts. The Cd mobility in the transport channels in the shoots was increased by EDTA in both intact and derooted plants. Application of DNP leads to increased relative Cd import to leaves in derooted plants, but a reduced import into leaves of intact plants. These results suggest that Cd-complexes are formed in root cells before root-to-shoot transport. Furthermore, initial Cd uptake may be associated with adsorption on the negative charges of the cell walls of the root system. The high Cd mobility in shoots, in experiments with intact plants and Cd-EDTA application, indicates the possibility of simultaneous uptake of Cd and EDTA, possibly as a Cd-EDTA complex. 相似文献

Goal and Scope
While the rise of the air temperature as part of the global climatic change seems to be widely assured, questions about the effects of this phenomenon in ecological systems get more and more interesting. In this sense this article shows by the example of monitoring sites in Baden-Württemberg the correlation of air temperature measurements with data on the phenology of selected plants.Methods
To this end the data on air remperature and plant phenology which are gathered from spatial dislocated measurement sites were correlated by prior application of Kriging interpolation. In addition, geostatistics are ssed to analyze and cartographically depict the spatial structure of the phenology in spring and in summer.Results and Conclusion
The statistical analysis reveals a significant relationship between the rising air temperature and the early beginning phenological phases like blooming or fruit maturation. From 1991 to 1999 spring time as indicated by phenological phases begins up to 14 days earlier than from 1961 to 1990. As proved by geostatistics, this holds true for the whole territory of Baden-Württemberg.Recommendation and Perspective
The effects of the rise of air temperature should be examined not only by monitoring of biological individuals as for example plants, but on ecosystem level, too. The German ecosystem research and the environmental monitoring should be supplemented by the study of the effects of the climatic change in ecosystems. Because air temperature and humidity have a great influence on the temporal and spatial distribution of pathogen carriers (vectors) and pathogens mapping of the determinants of vector and pathogen distribution in space and time should be done in order to identify hot spots for risk assessment and further detailed epidemiological studies. 相似文献949.

To evaluate the consequences of irradiation on the vegetation of the Chernobyl region, gene expression was compared in morphologically normal and dwarf needles from the same Pinus sylvestris trees in a region where the absorbed dose was 3-5 Gy. To compare the levels of gene expression, arrays consisting of 373 Pinus taeda cDNAs were hybridized with labeled cDNA derived from normal and dwarf needles of P. sylvestris. Twelve genes were significantly (P<0.01) up- or down-regulated between normal and dwarf needles for all five trees taken together. Five of these, related to stress or development, were up- or down-regulated 1.25-1.7-fold in the dwarf needles. There were no significant differences in (137)Cs content in the normal and dwarf needles, or in elongation growth rate of seedlings raised under controlled conditions from seed derived from trees in the region that had received a radiation dose over the range 2-12 Gy. 相似文献

Long-term time-series data sets of two shallow Dutch lakes, Lake Veluwemeer and Lake Wolderwijd were subjected to ordination
and clustering by means of non-supervised artificial neural networks (ANN). Splitting of the data sets into sub-series corresponding
with three different management periods have allowed a comparative analysis of both the short-term seasonal and long-term
phytoplankton dynamics in relation to the restoration measures. The lakes were considered as hyper-eutrophic and have been
managed both with bottom-up and top-down management approaches. Results of the study have demonstrated that non-supervised
ANN allow to elucidate causal relationships of complex ecological processes (1) within the specific genus, Oscillatoria and Scenedesmus and (2) the combination of external nutrient control and in-lake food web manipulation of the two lakes achieved to control
