Characteristics of steel slag under different cooling conditions   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Four types of steel slags, a ladle slag, a BOF (basic oxygen furnace) slag and two different EAF (electric arc furnace) slags, were characterized and modified by semi-rapid cooling in crucibles and rapid cooling by water granulation. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of different cooling conditions on the properties of glassy slags with respect to their leaching and volume stability. Optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and a standard test leaching (prEN 12457-2/3) have been used for the investigation. The results show that the disintegrated ladle slag was made volume stable by water granulation, which consisted of 98% glass. However EAF slag 1, EAF slag 2 and the BOF slag formed 17%, 1% and 1% glass, respectively. The leaching test showed that the glass-containing matrix did not prevent leaching of minor elements from the modified slags. The solubility of chromium, molybdenum and vanadium varied in the different modifications, probably due to their presence in different minerals and their different distributions.  相似文献

The role of ambient and enhanced ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB; 280 to 315 nm) in a natural sand-associated microbenthic community was studied in a 3-week experiment by incubating intact sediment cores from a shallow bay in an outdoor flow-through system with 27 aquaria. After sampling of initial cores, the remaining cores (one per aquarium) were given one of three treatments: no, ambient, and moderately enhanced UVB, and sampled, nine at a time, after 5, 12, and 19 d. The response of the community was studied by analysing algal and meiofaunal composition and biomass, chlorophyll a content, composition of pigments and fatty acids, and content of UV-absorbing compounds (state variables), as well as carbon fixation and allocation, and bacterial productivity (rate variables). Among rate variables, significant effects of UVB-treatments were found for carbon fixation and allocation, while bacterial productivity was not affected. For state variables, a significant response was observed for the composition of microalgae and fatty acids, and for chlorophyll a content. The effect of treatments was mainly observed as differences in development with time (two-way analysis of variance, treatment × time interaction). Towards the end of the experiment, the no-UVB treatment most often differed from one or both of the two treatments with UVB exposure, the latter showing lower values. There were marked successional changes in the community, irrespective of treatment. The microalgal community changed from being dominated by coccoid cyanobacteria and epipsammic diatoms to a dominance of epipelic diatoms and filamentous cyanobacteria. The pattern of carbon allocation, as well as an increased C/N ratio of the sediment, suggested limitation of growth, perhaps by nutrients, at the end of the experiment. This may possibly have acted synergistically with UVB exposure to create the treatment effects. The new knowledge gained from our experiment is that ambient UVB can exert a stress on the function of sand-associated microbenthic communities in shallow waters and that this effect coincides with structural differences in the community. More experiments in natural or semi-natural systems are needed to allow better prediction of microbenthic community-level responses to UVB. Bacterial cell envelope components are widely distributed in airborne dust, where they act as inflammatory agents causing respiratory symptoms. Measurements of these agents and other environmental factors are assessed in two elementary schools in a southeastern city in the United States. Muramic acid (MA) was used as a marker for bacterial peptidoglycan (PG), and 3-hydroxy fatty acids (3-OH FAs) were used as markers for Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Culturable bacteria were collected using an Andersen sampler with three different culture media. In addition, temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), and CO2 were continuously monitored. Concentrations of airborne MA and 3-OH FAs were correlated with total suspended particulate (TSP) levels. Outdoor MA (mean = 0.78-1.15 ng/m3) and 3-OH FA levels (mean = 2.19-2.18 ng/m3) were similar at the two schools. Indoor concentrations of airborne MA and 3-OH FAs differed significantly between schools (MA: 1.44 vs. 2.84 ng/m3; 3-OH FAs: 2.96 vs. 4.57 ng/m3). Although indoor MA levels were low, they were significantly related to teachers' perception of the severity of indoor air quality (IAQ) problems in their classrooms. Concentrations of CO2 correlated significantly with all bacteria measurements. Because CO2 levels were related to the number of occupants and the ventilation rates, these findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the children and teachers are sources of bacterial contamination. Many culturable bacteria present in indoor air are opportunistic organisms that can be infectious for compromised individuals, while both culturable and nonculturable bacterial remnants act as environmental toxins for both healthy and compromised individuals. Measuring the "total bacteria load" would be most accurate in assessing the biotoxicity of indoor air. Chemical analysis of MA and 3-OH FAs, when coupled with the conventional culture method, provides complementary information for assessing biocontamination of indoor air.  相似文献

Summary. The basic chemical structure of the sex pheromone of the pine sawfly Microdiprion pallipes (Fallén) has earlier been identified as the propionate ester of (2S,3S,7R/S,11R/S)/(2R,3R,7R/S,11R/S)-3,7,11- trimethyl-2-tridecanol. We now report the results from further investigations on the male response to individual stereoisomers and to blends of stereoisomers, both in electroantennographic (EAG) recordings and in field trapping experiments. We also present our attempts to determine the stereochemistry of the compounds present in females of M. pallipes. By comparing gas chromatograms and mass spectra obtained from natural extracts with those from synthetic compounds it was found that the females contain one or more of the four (2S,3S,7R/S,11R/S)-3,7,11-trimethyl-2- tridecanol isomers (SS++-1). The active pheromone component is the corresponding propionate ester 2. In EAG experiments, males responded most strongly to five propionate ester samples, namely two four-isomer blends: SS++-2 and SR++-2, and three individual stereoisomers: SSSR-, SRRR- and SRSR-2. In a series of field trapping experiments it was found that males were attracted to the SR++-2 four-isomer blend and to the individual isomer SSSR-2. Based on the EAG-recordings and field responses of males and the stereoisomers found in the females, we suggest that the propionate ester of (2S,3S,7S,11R)-3,7,11-trimethyl-2- tridecanol (SSSR-2) is used as a main component of the sex pheromone in M. pallipes. Apparently the males react to other stereoisomers in addition to that or those produced by the females.  相似文献

Summary The linked gas chromatographical/electroan-tennogram (GC/EAG) technique revealed that the parasitic reindeer nose bot fly is able to specifically sense components produced by the interdigital pheromone gland of reindeer. The head-space extraction technique, with Porapak Q as the collecting polymer, was used to trap pheromone gland and urine components used to assess fly responses. One component from reindeer urine also was a potent stimulus for the sensory neurons of the fly. These components can be important chemical signals to the flies for long distance orientation towards host animals. This is the first report on EAG in Oestridae.  相似文献

The release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from phytolankton during photosynthesis, and the utilization of this carbon by planktonic bacteria, was studied using 14CO2 and selective filtration. Natural sea water samples from a coastal area of the Northern Baltic Sea were incubated in the laboratory for detailed studies, and in situ for estimation of annual dynamics. In a laboratory incubation (at +1°C) the concentration of 14C-labelled dissolved organic carbon increased for about 2 h and then reached a steady state, representing about 0. 1% of the total DOC. Labelled organic carbon in the phytoplankton and bacterial fractions continued to increase almost linearly. The continuous increase in the bacterial fraction is thought to represent almost instantaneous utilization of the DOC released from the phytoplankton during photosynthesis. As an annual average, in 4 h in situ incubations, about 65% of the labelled organic carbon was found in the phytoplankton fraction (>3 m), about 27% in the bacterial fraction (0.2 to 3 m) and the remaining 8% as DOC (<0.2 m). Large variations in these percentages were recorded. The measured annual primary production was 93 g C m-2 (March to December), and the estimated bacterial production due to phytoplankton exudates 29 g C m-2. This represents a release of DOC of about 45% of the corrected annual primary production of 110 g C m-2 (assuming a bacterial growth efficiency of 0.6).  相似文献

Biomarkers in feral fish can be a useful tool for environmental monitoring of aquatic ecosystems. Drawbacks, however, are that suitable fish species are not always available and that natural variations can bias the results. An alternative strategy is to use farmed fish placed in cages. There is, however, still a risk that factors other than pollution level could have an impact on the biomarkers and the observed responses in the fish. The present study evaluates the effects of feeding procedure on biomarkers in caged fish. Two feeding rations (2% and 8% weekly feeding) have been examined for a large number of biomarkers in caged rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Significant effects of feeding rations were found on hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and catalase activity, PAH metabolites in bile, plasma ion concentrations and the presence of immature red blood cells. The influence on EROD activity and PAH metabolites seems to be caused by elevated uptake of pollutants when feeding ratios are higher. The effects on other biochemical and physiological variables are more likely caused by stress due to insufficient feeding. According to these results, valid comparison of fish groups in environmental monitoring requires standardized feeding levels.  相似文献

We compared the efficiency of some commercially available products and methods used for remediation of mould-contaminated building materials. Samples of gypsum board and pinewood were artificially contaminated with toxin-producing isolates of Stachybotrys chartarum and Aspergillus versicolor, respectively, then, ten different remediation treatments were applied according to the manufacturers' instructions. Microbial and chemical analyses of the infested materials were carried out both immediately before and after treatment, after six weeks of drying at room temperature, and after another six weeks of remoistening. The aim of the study was to determine whether the investigated methods could inhibit the mould growth and destroy some selected mycotoxins produced by the moulds. None of the decontamination methods tested could completely eliminate viable moulds. Some methods, especially boron based chemicals, ammonium based chemicals, and oxidation reduced the contents of mycotoxins produced by S. chartarum (satratoxin G and H, verrucarol), whereas the one which uses an ammonium based chemical reduced the amount of sterigmatocystin produced by A. versicolor with statistical significance. No remediation treatment eliminated all the toxins from the damaged materials. These results emphasize the importance to work preventively with moisture safety throughout the construction processes and management to prevent mould growth on building materials.  相似文献
