The effects of temperature on growth rate of rapidly-growing cultured macrosporophytes of 9 isolates of Atlantic Laminaria comprising 4 species have been investigated. No significant population variation was observed within species despite wide variations in temperature between the original collecting sites. L. saccharina showed a broad temperature optimum in the 10°–15°C range, whereas L. longicruris had a sharp optimum at 10°C. L. digitata and L. hyperborea grew more slowly, with only slightly sub-optimal growth over a wide temperature range, but with peaks at 10°C (L. digitata) and 15°C (L. hyperborea). The maximum survival temperatures of individual male and female vegetatively-growing gametophytes were ascertained for these species plus the Arctic L. solidungula, and were as follows: L. saccharina and L. longicruris, 23°C; L. digitata (male), 23°C; L. digitata (female), 22°C; L. hyperborea, 21°C; L. solidungula, 18°C. The lack of within-species differences demonstrates that the success of the genus in areas with different temperature regimes is brought about by phenotypic plasticity of individuals rather than the selection of temperature races or ecotypes.  相似文献

The induction of reproductive activity by blue light in female gametophytes of the brown alga Lamnaria saccharina has been investigated and related to other effects of red and blue light on these plants. Although germination of zoo-spores is slightly delayed in red light, female gametophytes grow at similar rates in blue and red light of the same quantum irradiance up to an age of 8 to 10 days, when plants in blue light begin to form eggs. The percentage of plants forming eggs is proportional to the total quanta of blue wavelengths received up to a saturating value of about 400 μE·cm-2; a 50% response is induced by 200 μE·cm-2. The action spectrum for the induction of fertility has a main peak at 430 to 450 nm, with two subsidiary peaks in the blue and one in the near-ultraviolet light, but the action spectrum for photosynthesis is quite different, with peaks in the red, green and blue regions. These results indicate that egg formation in female gametophytes occurs as a specific morphogenetic response to blue light, which is independent of photosynthesis and growth, and trial experiments with male gametophytes of L. saccharina and gametophytes of other species of Laminariales indicate that these plants react similarly.  相似文献

Observations were made on the horizontal distribution of certain invertebrates on the walls and floor of the upper chamber of the Gatún Lock system of the Panama Canal. The hydroid Cordylophora caspia (Pallas) and the gastrophod Neritina usnea Röding extended the full length of the chamber; the oligochaete Marionina sp. was confined to the upper half of the chamber (adjacent to Gatún Lake), and the amphipod Gitanopsis tortugae? Shoemaker, the isopod Munna sp. and the bivalve Mytilopsis sallei (Recluz) to the lower half; the sponge Trochospongilla leidii (Bowerbank) was distributed from the upper end to near the lower end of the chamber. A peculiar wedge-shaped distribution of T. leidii is thought to be a response to the influence of slight increases in salinity. Morphological observations on T. leidii are presented.  相似文献

The free-swimming medusae of Eirene viridula are typical marine hydroids, with distinct subdivisions into body regions, which were studied by comparison of light and electron microscopy. Particular attention is given to the epithelio-muscular and digestive muscle cells. The epidermis — apart from a few nerve cells and cnidocytes-consists of epitheliomuscular cells. At their bases these cells form a musculature and at the apex many secretory vesicles. In the velum, large expansions of the intercellular space are found. The gastrodermis — apart from the mucous and zymogen cells in the manubrium — consists of digestive muscle cells, the structure of which corresponds in principle to that of the epitheliomuscular cells. In its apex, this type of cells contains both normal coated vesicles and discoidal coated vesicles. In the solid tentacles, the digestive muscle cells form a turgescent vesicular tissue. The central nervous system consists of the exumbrellar, subumbrellar, and gastrodermal nerve rings. They are composed of ganglion cells, their processes, and intraepithelial flagella. The static organs are purely ectodermal statocysts which have only one lithocyte and only one sensory cell.  相似文献

By analyzing corresponding metabolites, degradation can be confirmed. Detailed mass balances considering the mineralization and formation of non-extractable residues are set up in closed model systems applying radiotracer techniques. Allozyme electrophoresis was conducted in an attempt to identify the origin ofMarenzelleria sp. found in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The analysis covered eight enzymes with ten loti from nine populations found on the North American Atlantic toast, these populations in the North Sea and five populations in the Baltic. The North Sea spionids correspond to the Type IMarenzelleria from North American coastal waters between Barnstable Harbor (Massachusetts) and Cape Henlopen (Delaware). Nei's genetic distance between these North American populations and those from the North Sea wasD = 0.010 to 0.020. TheMarenzelleria sp. found in the Baltic Sea very probably stems from North American populations of Type II found from the region of Chesapeake Bay (Trippe Bay) south to the Currituck Sound (North Carolina). The genetic distance between these North American populations and the Baltic populations isD = 0.000 to 0.001. The invaders appear to have lost little of their genetic variation while colonizing the North and Baltic Seas. Probably, both colonizing events tan be attributed to large numbers of individuals reaching Europe simultaneously on one or more occasions. In addition, aMarenzelleria Type III was found by electrophoresis among specimens from Currituck Sound (North Carolina), rohere it is sympatric withMarenzelleria Type II. Salinity is discussed as an important factor for the establishment ofMarenzelleria Type I in the North Sea and Type II in the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Flowers exhibit great intra-specific variation in the rewards they offer. At any one time, a significant proportion of flowers often contain little or no reward. Hence, foraging profitably for floral rewards is problematic and any ability to discriminate between flowers and avoid those that are less rewarding will confer great advantages. In this study, we examine discrimination by foraging bees among flowers of nasturtium, Tropaeolum majus. Bee visitors included carpenter bees, Xylocopa violacea, which were primary nectar robbers; honeybees, Apis mellifera, which either acted as secondary nectar robbers or gathered pollen legitimately and bumblebees, Bombus hortorum, which were the only bees able to gather nectar legitimately. Many flowers were damaged by phytophagous insects. Nectar volume was markedly lower in flowers with damaged petals (which were also likely to be older) and in flowers that had nectar-robbing holes. We test whether bees exhibit selectivity with regards to the individual flowers, which they approach and enter, and whether this selectivity enhances foraging efficiency. The flowers approached (within 2 cm) by A. mellifera and B. hortorum were non-random when compared to the floral population; both species selectively approached un-blemished flowers. They both approached more yellow flowers than would be expected by chance, presumably a reflection of innate colour preferences, for nectar standing crop did not vary according to flower colour. Bees were also more likely to accept (land on) un-blemished flowers. A. mellifera gathering nectar exhibited selectivity with regards to the presence of robbing holes, being more likely to land on robbed flowers (they are not able to feed on un-robbed flowers). That they frequently approached un-robbed flowers suggests that they are not able to detect robbing holes at long-range, so that foraging efficiency may be limited by visual acuity. Nevertheless, by using a combination of long-range and short-range selectivity, nectar-gathering A. mellifera and B. hortorum greatly increased the average reward from the flowers on which they landed (by 68% and 48%, respectively) compared to the average standing crop in the flower population. Overall, our results demonstrate that bees use obvious floral cues (colour and petal blemishes) at long-range, but can switch to using more subtle cues (robbing holes) at close range. They also make many mistakes and some cues used do not correlate with floral rewards.  相似文献

Population genetic structure of the thorny skate (Amblyraja radiata) was surveyed in >300 individuals sampled from Newfoundland, Iceland, Norway, the Kattegat and the central North Sea. A 290-bp fragment of the mt cytochrome-b gene was first screened by SSCP. Sequences of SSCP haplotypes revealed 34 haplotypes, 14 of which were unique to Iceland, 3 to Newfoundland, 1 to Norway and 3 to the Kattegat. The global F ST was weak but significant. Removal of the two Kattegat locations, which were the most differentiated, resulted in no significant genetic differentiation. Haplotype diversity was high and evenly distributed across the entire Atlantic (h = 0.8) with the exception of the North Sea (h = 0.48). Statistical parsimony revealed a star-like genealogy with a central widespread haplotype. A subsequent nested clade analysis led to the inference of contiguous expansion with evidence for long distance dispersal between Newfoundland and Iceland. Historical demographic analysis showed that thorny skates have undergone exponential population expansion that started between 1.1 million and 690,000 years ago; and that the Last Glacial Maximum apparently had little effect. These results strongly differ from those of a parallel study of the thornback ray (Raja clavata) in which clear structure and former refugial areas could be identified. Although both species have similar life history traits and overlapping ranges, the continental shelf edge apparently does not present a barrier to migration in A. radiata, as it does for R. clavata.  相似文献

The human eye color blue reflects a simple, predictable, and reliable genetic mechanism of inheritance. Blue-eyed individuals represent a unique condition, as in their case there is always direct concordance between the genotype and phenotype. On the other hand, heterozygous brown-eyed individuals carry an allele that is not concordant with the observed eye color. Hence, eye color can provide a highly visible and salient cue to the child’s heredity. If men choose women with characteristics that promote the assurance of paternity, then blue-eyed men should prefer and feel more attracted towards women with blue eyes. To test these predictions, close-up photos of young women and adult men with either blue or brown eyes were rated for their attractiveness by young women and men observers with either blue or brown eyes (N=88). The eye color in the photographs of each model was manipulated so that a same face would be shown with either the natural eye color (e.g., blue) or with the other color (e.g., brown). Both blue-eyed and brown-eyed female participants showed no difference in their attractiveness ratings for male models of either eye color. Similarly, brown-eyed men showed no preference for either blue-eyed or brown-eyed female models. However, blue-eyed men rated as more attractive the blue-eyed women than the brown-eyed ones. We interpret the latter preference in terms of specific mate selective choice of blue-eyed men, reflecting strategies for reducing paternity uncertainty. In a second study, a group of young adults (N=443) of both sexes and different eye colors (blue, brown, and green) were asked to report the eye and hair color of their romantic partners. Their responses indicated the presence of assortative mating by eye color as well as, to a less degree, for hair color. Most importantly, blue-eyed male respondents were the group with the largest proportion of partners of same eye color. These findings 1) indicate that blue-eyed men do prefer women with the same eye color and 2) specifically suggest the presence of a male adaptation for the detection of extra-pair paternity based on eye color, as a phenotypically based assurance of paternity (i.e., when the father’s and offspring’s phenotypes match) as well as a defense against cuckoldry (i.e., when the phenotypes do not match).Electronic supplementary material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at and is accesseble for authorized users.  相似文献
