Natural-abundance delta15N showed that nitrate generated from commercial land application of swine (Sus scrofa domesticus) waste within a North Carolina Coastal Plain catchment was being discharged to surface waters by ground water passing beneath the sprayfields and adjacent riparian buffers. This was significant because intensive swine farms in North Carolina are considered non-discharge operations, and riparian buffers with minimum widths of 7.6 m (25 ft) are the primary regulatory control on ground water export of nitrate from these operations. This study shows that such buffers are not always adequate to prevent discharge of concentrated nitrate in ground water from commercial swine farms in the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain, and that additional measures are required to ensure non-discharge conditions. The median delta15N-total N of liquids in site swine waste lagoons was +15.4 +/- 0.2% vs. atmospheric nitrogen. The median delta15N-NO3 values of shallow ground water beneath and adjacent to site sprayfields, a stream draining sprayfields, and waters up to 1.5 km downstream were + 15.3 +/- 0.2 to + 15.4 +/- 0.2%. Seasonal and spatial isotopic variations in lagoons and well waters were greatly homogenized during ground water transport and discharge to streams. Neither denitrification nor losses of ammonia during spraying significantly altered the bulk ground water delta15N signal being delivered to streams. The lagoons were sources of chloride and potassium enrichment, and shallow ground water showed strong correlation between nitrate N, potassium, and chloride. The 15N-enriched nitrate in ground water beneath swine waste sprayfields can thus be successfully traced during transport and discharge into nearby surface waters.  相似文献

The biological health of soil is an important aspect of soil quality because of the many critical functions performed by organisms in soil. Various indicators of soil quality have been proposed, but measurements of microbial biomass are most commonly used. During decomposition of plant residues in soil the relative intensities of the O-alkyl-C signal decreases and the alkyl-C signal increases in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra. This leads to the suggestion that the alkyl-C to O-alkyl-C ratio of a soil may indicate the degree of decomposition. Consequently, the overall resource quality of soil C as a substrate for heterotrophic microorganisms may be inversely related to the alkyl-C to O-alkyl-C ratio. Our hypothesis is that a relationship exists between the size of the soil microbial community (microbial biomass) and the quality of soil carbon as a resource for microorganisms. New data have been combined with previously published data to show that there was a significant, negative correlation between the biomass C to total C (Cmic, to Corg) ratio and the alkyl-C to O-alkyl-C ratio (p < 0.01), which supports our hypothesis.  相似文献

The use of higher plants to accelerate the remediation of petroleum contaminants in soil is limited by, among other factors, rooting depth and the delivery of nutrients to the microsites at which remediation occurs. The objective of this study was to test methods of enhancing root growth and remediation in the subsurface of a contaminated petroleum sludge. The phytoremediation of highly contaminated petroleum sludge (total petroleum hydrocarbons >35 g kg(-1) was tested in the greenhouse as a function of the frequency and the depth of irrigation and fertilization. Water and dissolved plant nutrients were added to the soil surface or at a depth of 30 cm, either daily or weekly. Equivalent quantities of water and nutrients were added in all cases. Daily irrigation at a depth of 30 cm invoked greater root growth and enhanced contaminant degradation relative to all other treatments. In the absence of plants, residual concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons after 7 mo were higher than with plants. The presence of plant roots clearly improved the physical structure of the soil and increased microbial populations. Thus, the plant roots in conjunction with daily additions of soluble N and P appeared to enhance oxygen transport to greater depths in the soil, stimulate petroleum-degrading microorganisms, and provide microbial access to soil micropores. Subsurface irrigation with frequent, small amounts of water and nutrients could significantly accelerate phytoremediation of field soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons.  相似文献

Legumes grown in biosolids-amended soils and then fed to ruminants can represent problematic sources of molybdenum (Mo), but few field data are available to quantify the risk. We used a set of fields amended to high cumulative biosolids Mo loads (>18 kg ha(-1)) over 27 yr to generate additional data. Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] was grown on 29 fields (pH values>6.8) amended to a wide range of soil Mo loads. Soybean grain harvested from each field was analyzed for Mo and the concentrations regressed against soil Mo loads estimated from actual soil Mo concentrations in the 0- to 15-cm depth. Slopes of such linear regressions represent uptake coefficients (UC values) used by the USEPA to assess risk of biosolids Mo to ruminants fed forage grown on biosolids-amended land. The UC value for all 29 fields was estimated as 1.66, which agrees with the few soybean grain data in the literature. The UC value, however, is well below a conservative UC value of 4, recently recommended for all fresh legume materials fed to cattle. Soybean grain can contain high concentrations of Mo (>10 mg kg(-1)) and have low (<2:1) Cu to Mo ratios, which can exacerbate molybdenosis problems in cattle. However, soybean grain normally constitutes only -10% of dairy cattle diet, and other constituents (e.g., corn grain, stover, mineral supplements) are sufficient, or can be manipulated, to control molybdenosis.  相似文献

Modern environmental policy implementation in many developed countries is increasingly regionally oriented. Regional governments have undertaken measures designed for the specific needs of the region but, so far, the resulting change in environmental quality has hardly been monitored. This study develops a method for the quantitative evaluation of region-specific environmental policy. Two forms of monitoring are distinguished: monitoring of performance of policy measures and monitoring of environmental quality. This study investigates two regions in the Netherlands where region-specific policy has been implemented. Performance monitoring focused on reduction of nitrate leaching to groundwater. Leaching reductions were calculated with simple models or rules of thumb. Quality monitoring focused on nitrate concentrations under grassland and other land use. An analysis of variance showed significant differences between different soil units. Stratified kriging was applied for spatial interpolation, showing within-unit variability. The current monitoring network could be improved by using a more regular type of grid.  相似文献

Jamshedpur, the steel city of India situated in the eastern part of India is affected by increasing air pollution levels as a result of concentrated industrial activities. The impact of NOx emissions resulting from various air pollution sources, viz. industries, vehicles and domestic, was estimated using Industrial Source Complex Short-Term gaussian dispersion model. The contribution of NOx concentration from industrial, vehicular and domestic sources was found to be 53, 40 and 7%. Further statistical analysis was carried out to evaluate the model performance by comparing measured and predicted NOx concentrations. The model performance was found good with an accuracy of about 68%.  相似文献

The response of Usnea amblyoclada (Müll. Arg.) Zahlbr. to real concentrations of atmospheric pollutants measured by two automatic monitoring stations, was studied in Córdoba City, Argentina. The influence of different weather conditions on the biomonitor's response was also assessed. The concentration of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, hydroperoxy-conjugated dienes, and malondialdehyde were quantified in lichen thalli collected from a clean area and in transplanted thalli after 1 month of exposure in an urban area, from April to October, 1996. The dry weight/fresh weight, chlorophyll b/chlorophyll a and phaeophytin a/chlorophyll a ratios were also calculated. Data sets were evaluated by two-way analysis of variance and correlation analysis. It was observed that hydroperoxy-conjugated dienes, malondialdehyde, chlorophylls, and pigment degradation increase during winter-time, when higher levels of suspended particles, non-methane hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulfide and ozone were also measured. These findings would be connected mainly with meteorological conditions, as most pollutants did not exceed prescribed threshold levels.  相似文献

TRACI, a model based on the physical mechanisms governing the migration of radon in unsaturated soils, has been developed to evaluate the radon flux density at the surface of uranium mill tailings. To check the validity of the TRACI model and the effectiveness of cover layers, an in situ study was launched in 1997 with the French uranium mining company, COGEMA. The study consisted of continuous measurements of moisture content, suction, radon concentration at various depths inside a UMT cover, and flux density at its surface. An initial analysis has shown that radon concentration and flux density, as calculated with a steady-state diffusion model using monthly averaged moisture contents, are in good agreement with measured monthly averaged concentrations and flux densities.  相似文献

It is often argued that the quality of science is related to the possibilities of making accurate predictions. It has also long been argued that due to the complex nature of ecosystems, it will never be possible to predict important target variables, especially with more comprehensive dynamic models. New results in radioecology have, however, demonstrated that those arguments are no longer valid. The key to the predictive success lies in the structuring of the model. The accident at Chernobyl has, in fact, provided science with an intriguing opportunity to study how the pulse of 137Cs is transported through ecosystem pathways, thus revealing the basic structure of these ecosystems, i.e. which are the key and the less-important pathways. It is paradoxical to conclude that the Chernobyl accident is, perhaps, the most important factor behind the revolution in predictive ecosystem modelling which lies behind the decrease in the uncertainty factor from 10 to 0.25-0.5. The sub-model for the potassium moderator presented in this paper is an example of a mechanistically based sub-model used within the framework of a more comprehensive lake model for 137Cs. The K-moderator presented is derived from the existing knowledge on ion transport in biological membranes and takes into account ion equilibria modelled by the Nernst equation and the uptake kinetics quantified by the Michaelis-Menten model. It provides the type of structure to this overall lake model that helps to explain the excellent predictive power of this model.  相似文献

The Hanford Environmental Dose Reconstruction Project estimated the radiation dose to individuals from historical emissions of radioactive materials from the Hanford Site in Washington State. Project validation studies using predicted activity concentrations of 131I on sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) showed a systematic underestimation against historical data during cold weather months, indicating a need for sagebrush model improvement. A deposition model for semi-volatile organic materials presented by Komp and McLachlen (Environ. Sci. Tech. 31 (1997) 886-890) is adapted here for gaseous iodine onto sagebrush. The deposition model includes a temperature-dependent term based on an integrated van't Hoff equation. Calibration data for the model are obtained from a release of 131I in 1963. Modeling results for releases in 1946 show a good match between historical data and predicted results using the new model. The new model shows improvement over interception-fraction type models, but requires plant-type-specific calibration data.  相似文献
