Technology innovation is an increasingly globalized exercise with dramatic consequences for scientific and diplomatic goals alike, and requires enhanced participation and integration of scientists and science-minded diplomats within diplomatic missions to advance shared policy goals. The current conceptual hydrogeologic model established for source water to the Amargosa River was tested in order to help inform management decisions regarding the Amargosa River's Federal designation as Wild and Scenic through an Act of Congress. The limited availability of water in this region results in the critical need for effective management in the basin to maintain its Wild and Scenic attributes inclusive of habitat for several endangered and threatened species. The use of forensic tools and integration of multiple lines of geologic, hydrogeologic, geochemical, and stable isotopic evidence suggest that the simple historical model for primary groundwater transport through this region is incorrect and that a large supply of regional baseflow does not provide the hydrogeological foundation of the Amargosa River basin. Data collected is consistent with an alternative model requiring complex source mixing and shallow alluvial groundwater that supports river flow. This conclusion also suggests Wild and Scenic conditions in this basin are more precarious than previously understood.  相似文献

Americans make up only 4% of the world population, yet currently consume 25% of the world’s fossil fuels. The U.S. imports 63% of its oil and it is predicted that by 2020 the U.S. will be importing 95% of its oil resources. Over the past century, ample and affordable supplies of fossil fuels have powered the growth and prosperity of the economies of the US and other countries. Within this century, world oil supplies will decline while demand is projected to continue to increase, suggesting that we will have to transition to different fuels or become much more energy efficient or both. Looking ahead to the near decades, estimates are that consumers will have to reduce their energy use by at least 50%. This reduction will be necessary in large part due the decline in the availability of conventional oil and gas, but also because the U.S. population will continue to grow in number. Although government action is important, individuals too often discount their ability to make significant contributions to solving such major problems. This investigation identifies how informed and concerned individuals can collectively conserve fossil energy. Policies and strategies for tree management and protection on a national, regional, and local level have not sufficiently considered differences between rural and urban areas. We used expert knowledge to compare rural and urban areas in a case study evaluating the relative importance of ecosystem services (ES) in policy development. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and focus group discussions were used to rank 17 ES, representing four classes of services: provisioning, regulating, habitat, and cultural. The results indicated that effective protection strategies, beyond simply increasing general tree cover, should consider specific benefits trees provide to local communities. 湖南省在湘资沅澧四流域建设了20个地表水水质自动监测站,率先安装了重金属自动监测仪.通过对站房选址、站房建设、仪器配备与选型、系统集成和平台建设等方面优化配备,提出一系列切实可行的河流断面水质自动监测站建设方案.并在河流断面水质自动监测站运营模式、运维工作内容、质控管理、数据质量判断等建设与运维管理方面做了积极探索,为实时监控河流断面水质的特征污染指标和水质现状,建立湖南水环境监控预警体系和生态补偿机制提供了保障.  相似文献

Anthropogenic effects on marine ecosystems (e.g. hypoxia, warming) at and beyond continental margins are assumed to affect physiological and biochemical boundaries to species’ distributions, potentially leading to habitat contraction across depth. Whether or not shallow-water benthic invertebrates are capable of undergoing depth-related migrations in response to such perturbations remains largely unknown. The few studies available have focused solely on whether colonisation of deep waters may be ongoing and on the ability of shallow-water species to tolerate low temperatures and high hydrostatic pressures: two physical parameters, which are thought to limit the depth range of a species. Those studies did not consider the effects of acclimation to low temperature and, especially, acclimation to high hydrostatic pressure on pressure tolerance. We demonstrate that acclimation to both low temperature (5 °C) and to high hydrostatic pressure (10 MPa) increases the pressure tolerance within the shallow-water shrimp Palaemonetes varians. Previous studies have demonstrated the impressive temperature and pressure tolerance of this shallow-water shrimp. Here, we provide evidence that a shallow-water species may acclimate to low temperature and high pressure and show greater pressure tolerance, suggesting that shallow-water organisms may be able to rapidly—and potentially stepwise—acclimate to the low temperature and high pressure conditions typical of the deep sea. These findings are of importance for understanding phylogenetic development from shallow- to deep-water species and the processes behind past, present and future bathymetric range shifts in species.  相似文献

The diffusive release of o-xylene from two soils with different contents of organic carbon (1.1 % and 0.11 % TOC) and with two different water contents (app. 5 % w/w and 15 % w/w was studied in the laboratory. The soils were spiked with o-xylene in the laboratory. The fluxes were measured over a period of 24 hours. The measured fluxes were compared to predictions by two models. Model I, which is an analytical model, assumed instant local equilibrium between soil air, water and solids. The distribution coefficients were measured for the two soils, and Henry's constant and the diffusion coefficient in air were taken from the literature. This model overestimated the flux for o-xylene for all the tested combinations. The ratios between estimated and observed fluxes at 1 h were between 1.7 and 7.3. Model II assumed that the mass transfer of o-xylene between the solids and the water phase was kinetically controlled and was solved numerically. However, the predictions by the more advanced model were not significantly better than the prediction by the simple analytical model. The results indicate that prediction of o-xylene volatilisation from unsaturated soil is associated with substantial uncertainty.  相似文献
